    I found this movie to be quite enjoyable. I love B&W. Dealing with shadows, lighting, etc. is in many respects better than color.

    The claim that spies along the coast were what caused the shipping disaster along the Gulf and eastern seaboard US in the first few months of WWII persisted until the Navy realized that not blacking out the cities gave the U-boats a huge advantage. Our ships were silhouetted against the bright lights all along the coast, just waiting for a sub further offshore to pick them off. Even though I lived 100 miles inland in California, our town went through extensive drills in the event of Japanese air attacks or even invasion. It was a scary time for this 4-year old that I've never forgotten.

      Know the feeling! I was a 4yr. old living at Ft. Richardson in '53/54, during the height of our contention with the USSR. I remember our lights going out during base alerts, and soldiers patrolling by our housing, shining flashlights through our basement windows, where we dependents were all huddled in fear. Folks today have no clue (yet) what nuclear fear is!

    While a bit crude by today's standards with all of the CGI junk, profanity, nudity and every other loss of morals that Follywood produces these days, this was a great film for it's time. There were a lot of good films produced in the forties and early fifties that far exceed most of what passes for "entertainment" today.

      These movies and most of the story lines and dialogues right into the 60s are considered wholesome. Interestingly in todays world one may be a stalker or a misogynist , or worse a womanizer groper etc ! We just lost a Governor who grew up with these amazingly wholesome stories. Just an observation of the broad strokes of opining.

    It's obvious by the comments of a few posters that they were either too young or weren't born and didn't experience WWII, or it's effects on the average person. Yes, to many today this was a B movie, and Yes, most of the actors were stock actors and not first name celebrities as you require in your movies today. BUT, the fact was that this type of movie was our 'Internet" "social media" of the day and we watched them as avidly and with concern about what they told us was going on as you do your "Facebook" or what ever today.... Shame, you can't watch an old film and try to see it from the perspective of the days when it was produced and not from your caustic and PC perspective of today.

    • @forgottenman8629
      @forgottenman8629 5 лет назад +16

      Yeah, you nailed it, the 'perspective' of that era is it. One cannot view history through the lens of the 21st century. That's seems to be a tough-tough thing to ask of many of today's millenniums.

      Oh, Rubbish! You're complaining about a dumbed-down post WWII generation(s) that was your generation's doing. Stop whining about your children or materialistic, narcissistic grandchildren and a world that is environmentally and
      politically destroying itself. If Stephen Hawking was correct there's only 100 years left on planet earth for humans, SO the SHAME is that you can't enjoy the few moments left to you and your progeny. Take the stick out of your ass!!

      There are always JERKS that don't like the movies that are here and complain about the time they wasted watching them. I don't get it if they don't like something they can watch something else I do and I don't comment about not liking something I don't watch.
      Being in my early 60's I was not around for WWII but my father served in the Navy so we would occasionally watch this type of program. And of course Combat, The Rat Patrol, McHale's Navy, Hogan's Heros, later on, we watched Black Sheep Squadron. Of course, some of them were more comedy than factual, but that's the way of television. I enjoy these old films and will continue to watch them for what the represented.

    Another great and fun @PizzaFlix upload. Good sauce on this one. Just an observation on the film: that sub depicted in the first minute is more like something you would see as a comfortable cruising submarine taking in the tropical underwater sights with all those cabin windows and bulging sides instead of a slick, narrow, WWII war machine where there was barely enough room to move. This depiction was like the space ships envisioned in the next decade, all spacious and comfortable with room for a swimming pool and a pony. (Thanks Hyacinth, lol.) OH, and the wheel that was supposedly being turned by water was turning the wrong way. (Just a hobby catching these tiny imperfections.)

    This film raised the spirit of the American people during the war it's a good propaganda film considering at the time that German U-boats were sinking American merchant shipping and the US Navy had not decided to convoy ships yet as Adm. King thought it was a waste of resources. The film blames losses on spys, thus diverting attention away from real problem. The hero of the film an alien is given citizenship, unlike aliens fighting in today's US forces who are not given citizenship, some even deported. A very idealistic film.
