Very cool style, a lot like Aikijutsu in terms of the throws. I saw a class once and loved the atmosphere, and the great teacher. Would have
started it, but instead I continued with Aikido as I loved Aikido and also found a great teacher there. In fact the Kenpo teacher pointed me towards that Aikido dojo! If there were more time in life, it would have been great to do both!

This is a very interesting system. The punching seems more practical - i.e. there doesn't appear to be any "hiki-te".
Isn't "hikite" the action of bringing back the hand ? If so there is "hikite".

Syamsul Bahri Doshin So, the founder of this system studied Hakkoryu Jujutsu, which can be considered a derivative of Daitoryu, just as is Aikido.
It is more than just these two; shorinji kempo is the modified japanese version of Shaolin kung fu.

I think that it's not so easy nor prudent try to grab a fast punch (jab or cross) direct in the face, but if you can do it, and then put the "boxer" on the ground... Congratulations!!!!
It's a choreographed demo. In aikido, it looks good but all participants go along with throws. Same with karate and judo. Go to judo tournament and you'll seldom see throws in practice where you have a cooperating partner. Same for karate. Look at mma, seldom will you see well executed kicks or any idealized martial art technique. I visited a shorin ji kempo dojo once. They're great people. It's all about helping you and others, fighting is secondary.

Can someone explain please the meaning of the black clothes that the last men are wearing? Is it related to their ranks for example?
This is simply the traditional outfit in Shorinji Kempo. It is called a "Hoi".
Put simply, Shorinji Kempo is the Japanese version of Shaolin Kungfu, so the outfit is similar to the one used by monks.
I do not know the details, but it is, indeed, worn by higher grade practitioners. Very likely in relation to their title instead of their rank.

It is indeed the Hoi. One can only put it on after attaining 3rd Dan, and that is the time one can be called Sensei. Young Kawashima-Sensei is 5th Dan.
The senseis in my dojo wears them during gradings and events, it's basically so you can see who is responsible for the activity that is going on and who you're gonna turn to if you have questions and such. I don't think it's limited to REALLY high ranks. I have three senseis and they are 4th dan, 3rd dan and 2nd dan. All of them wears their hois.

It is said in the description that the last demo (6:50) is a "free demo" by te higher ranked masters.
What does it mean ? Is it an unscripted demo ? Free sparring ? Or else ?
While we are not experts in Shorinji Kempo, it is very likely called a free demo in opposition to the other sequences of the demonstration that are fully prearranged Kata (which means they are always the same and must remain the same).
The free practice part might be prepared in advance for this specific demonstration, or it might just come out of inspiration (that would be to the practitioners to answer), but it is not prearranged Kata forms.
Julien you are semi-correct! It's not an unscripted demo, Kumi Embu means a set of katas that one must follow when fighting 2 or more people. Every "dan" (rank) has a certain embu they follow, especially when you get to a high level they get very complicated and hard to apply. If you want to check an unscripted demo or free sparring there are randori and unyonyo that follow that criteria for Shorinji Kempo. Hope I helped answer your question!
@@seidobudostudies simply means that the 2 put together their own fight sequence and worked on it for show.. As a 1 Dan instructor years back it was good to let the students show their own style within the techniques.
For those whose believe this martial art would not be practical on the street.. Let me inform you the foundation comes from shaolin Kung fu. The Founder of Shorinji Kempo Do So Shin brought his knowledge back to Japan and started his school.. He used the techniques during post war ww2 against the black market criminals on the street.
Now you have a little insight.. Do your own research about the history of shorinji kempo.
@@williamearljarrett9739 Hi, we get that alot in my school of budo as well (Aikido under Nishio Sensei's teachings) I always retort "It's a demostration, you have to coregraph things to make sure an audience can follow along. If the only thing people ever saw of Judo was the Goshin Jutsu katas they would think the same thing about Judo being "fake"

I like the rule demo. Though it looks like the movements could have been cleaned up more. After all it seems they are black belt or higher.
The movements show promise in practicality with the two woman demo. Though many times the blocking was either too early or too late getting to the strike and causing the longer hair girl from getting hit.
It seemed they spent good time on the falling part. Which I though , no pun, was good for safty, but also to practice more realistically. The seriousness and yelling are really for show.
Myself showing how loud and serious is not much of an importance to me.
I want to see them doing the moves well and doing so that it shows real intent to bring able to hurt and work.
The group of guys seem decent. Off rhythm from each other at first, but was able to match them selves better as the demo progressed.
Again, seem a tad hesitant and sluggish with their opponit's abd could have showed cleaner in the movements demonstrating true effectivenes.
No belt above the black, black belt is max, you can have multiple levels in black belt
