I am JKA but I trained at their dojo in San Francisco back in the early 90s. They are very tough and very good at what they do. They take all their ukemi on hardwood floors and their joint locks are not gentle at all!
Very similar to most other wrist lock styles. I have sparred against some and found that once you are aware of what they can do, its almost impossible for them to catch your wrist as it also takes just a small quick movement to escape before your wrist is trapped. After you are put in a wrist lock only great strength or a quick spin or roll affords any chance of escape and this is risky.
your only choice is to employ "nage" which is to flip out of the wrist lock, but if the guy is good and has you locked in there's little chance of escape.. employing these techniques in a fight? many many years of training for the movement to become natural, and fast enough that the opponent cant harden up or escape.. There is "atemi" a flick to the eye, or something similar to distract the opponent to throw off his balance, so the technique is end of a much larger movement, as people don't just offer body parts.. Look closely, and you will see it's more about locking him into your torso, than twisting the wrist, your one limb, cannot resist the movement of an entire body, so footwork, position, balance, and understand the mechanics of the body are all part of it..
They are taught that if the opponent is aware, dont do it. Any small joint locks can only be applied accidentally or incidentally. You cannot plan to do it when starting an attack. You cannot force it either to work once your opponent knows what you're doing. Also, there's always an escape plan when it doesn't work, hence they have what they call Henka, variation and continuation. Take note this art is not sport fighting art, it's not designed for Mano a Baldo fight such as valetudo, It was designed as buddhist monks to defend themselves, not to destroy others. Also there's a chance that your sparring partners are not that good :)
Of course it isn't impossible to counter-attack, in principle alone. Surely for every move there are options to counter that move. Perhaps more correctly you might say that the finish of each sequence is impossible to counter. The start, entry...or ... the middle part... more opportunity for spoiling or countering a move. Am I incorrect?
absolutely, there's no bones made about it, it's really the end of a larger technique that uses "atemi" some manner of distraction to get the opponents body into position, and off balance.. you've got to be damn quick, almost instinctive level and be able to employ the technique perfectly to use it in a fight..
@@planegaper yes you have less then seconds to perform the technique before the opponent counters it and yes there are counters for the techniques shown in the video, of course it takes a lot of practice
I won't like these method as long as I default my own Aikido knowledge as which to find my exact gauge of joint locking leverages even it goes to breaking my opponent's wrist whilst I'm in the height of combat's dangers even in practise to rehearsed this joint locking all over and over again and it can lead to any unrestricted freak accidence. but I simply respect those masters who kept their systems internally sacred.
honestly marko, the high level guys are less likely to hurt you than a beginner, the wrist lock is very gentile, it's more about locking you in and getting your balance off than breaking joints.. especially in practice.. the students demeanor is watched as much as his/her skill, or aptitude, the wrong kind of guy can lead to bad injuries, no cowboys in Shorinji Kempo.. I've seen a few people asked to leave as it's done to better your self rather than simply injure people... Healing techniques, and shiatsu are taught as well to balance the damage incurred of hours of doing this stuff..

手刀って実はチョップというより相手の頸動脈を首の中で捻り斬る感じなのではい^^;
