Amazing show. It was a crime that it was never finished. Leave it to the studios to not recognize talent and a solid story.

I think the biggest reason this series failed is because SG1 and SGA were very much schlocky 90s action shows. You know no matter how bad it gets, everything will be resolved in 45 minutes of screen time with no real danger to the main cast (unless it is a season finale or an actor asked for a raise), no matter how many enemies are shooting at them. Sprinkle in some cheesy humor and you have a great 90s, early 2000s show.
SGU fits more into the gritty, realistic aesthetic modern TV tends towards. Threats to the cast are treated with more severity, morality isn't confined to Good Guys vs Bad Guys, and the overall tone is more sombre.
Fans of SG1 and SGA were shocked and put off by the differences in Universe, and the potential fans who would enjoy Universe assumed it was more of the same 90s feel and didn't give the show a chance. It wasn't made to appeal to the old fans and it wasn't marketed well enough to appeal to new fans. I think if SGU had released a few more years after the other series's ended it would've seen better results but it got stuck in an awkward time without an audience.

Well, money doesn't grow on trees, and if there is not enough people watching the show, they're actually losing money producing the show. You wouldn't keep doing something that you have nothing in return for, right? I mean, sure, you can argue that passion is much more important than money. But if you make something and people are like "meh" - what would you do? Would you keep doing it, because you love to work on it? Or would that give you a signal that people don't appreciate it? I personally wouldn't do something that people don't appreciate. Regardless of money.

@@redopz4462while all of what you say is true, there was also this little thing called the global economic collapse of 2008-2010 and MGM mismanaging its money as a general rule, going bankrupt unrelated to the Stargate productions themselves. It's possible that SGU could have weathered the fan backlash if there was enough money going around due to the economy as a whole being in good shape. We'll never know.

It did, but the screwed it up the first season when they failed to do universe building.
One major problem early on was no enemy, no Goa'uld, or Wraith, or Ori. Nothing to really center the series around. In season two when some enemies were introduced and universe building really happened did it shine.
But by then the fans had left.

A lightyear is how far light travels in 1 year, so if the crew were somehow able to turn Destiny around and travel back towards Earth at the speed of light, the universe could just about reboot from scratch by the time they got home.

This show needed a Milky Way based series running concurrently with it. SG1 and Atlantis made us care about what happens there, and am this show yeeted us so far away it was almost immaterial to the main canon. While the show itself was great, it took too long to establish its own mythos.

    • @Domihork

I was recently rewatching the whole of SG and I thought the same thing! SGU suffered from not being set-up in any of the previous shows, having none of the main cast be introduced in previous shows and having no concurrent show running alongside it. In season 2 when Lucian Alliance attacks Earth, that could have been a cross-over episode for SGU and the potential Earth-bound show.

@@Domihorkit gave the impression this is a side story to a main story, but the main story didn’t exist. Lucian Alliance wants Destiny. Why? @@argentshrike516 My head canon is that Destiny is a ship just far enough ahead that we could replicate all the technology. Compare that to Atlantis where the best they can do is fix things that broke. Humanity or the Lucian Alliance couldn't build another Atlantis or a ZPM, but they could build a Destiny.

Guessing y’all missed the first episode. It explains the start of this. They were aware of the ship in a way. I recall both Atlantis and SG1 finding comments about it. The ancients left long ago often comes up. Welcome to the ancients, the ship came from those on Earth. Not to mention you learn how the gates are being planted everywhere by smaller ships. I don’t remember if it’s this ship the gate ships reside in or not. But the ship stops periodically for a while then moves on.

The reality is they would need to have nerfed the travel times to make this important. The atlantis star drive clocks in at easily 5 million light years per day (wormhole drive even faster) with asgard hyper drives easily logging that. This means their hyper drives are at least able to travel 1.8 billion light years per year. Destiny takes 24 kya to travel a billion light years. Let's be Friggin generous and say it's actually half that 🙄 in speed so 50kya. That still means destiny would be over ONE TRILLION lightyears from earth based on the 50 Mya launch date. This is actually a reasonable reason why the ancients wouldn't have caught up necessarily as who is gonna wait a 1000 years 😂 but still, they could have kicked on the ninth chevron, upgraded the ftl to hyperspace, and then just hopped back and watch as destiny zoomed past existence 😂
