7:20 The complaints of JJK being too wordy and being only about fights are NOT contradictory. The overall criticism is that JJK doesn't have many moments of downtime for the cast.
The series has a lot of fights with a massive amount of explanation as to why what the 2 fighters are doing doesn't break the rules of this universe's powersytem. But many people would prefer if some of those speech bubbles were used for... I don't know... Yuji and Megumi hanging out between arcs.

Also most of char are pretty one dimensional char with little development no dynamic with other nor any personality. Outside of higuruma and takaba in my opinion most of the char are souless hollow char with no personality. Look i love jjk but lets not pretend its deep and has that many layers of depth. I feel like with jjk it's alot of "fake complexity" kind of like with the term "fake tension", cause alot of the time in jjk they'll be having this big description/inner dialogue explaining something that they did or explaining how something works, when it rly was just something simple like them throwing a punch but adding too much detail to it making it seem more complex/strategic then it actually is.

  • @SilverSaw988
    @SilverSaw988 3 месяца назад +7

If you want to see a series that’s paced better, look at chainsawman. Yes im serious. Sure, there’s chapters without much forward plot progression, BUT you never get needlessly drawn out power explanations that nobody cares about, and the chapters where the plot doesn’t progress much, are usually chapters with a ton of characterization, good moment to moment action/ comedy, or panels used to subtly show the shifts in characters mood or long pauses ETC (AKA taking advantage of the medium).
JJK is simultaneously too fast and too slow. It’s fights are bogged down by endless exposition, but the plot hardly ever moves an inch because there’s just so many fights. Characterization and development heavily suffer for this, just like they suffer when Gege kills a character who clearly has barely started to matter.
JJK is an extremely flawed series. But it’s still somewhat fun. I just don’t like when people pretend that it’s some literary masterclass. It’s narratively average at the very best. But IMO, it’s pretty below average in that regard

@@stevenbrown4001 yup, the devil powers are actually fantastic because they powescale themselves by just being as strong as the fear is represented in humanity. So many people can get a good idea about their power just by thinking about it, and also it engages the reader to consider what humanities fears are and why they’de be a more or less powerful devil. In my opinion it makes discussing devil power levels and theorizing on what fears could be powerful devils a whole lot of fun

It's not complicated. It's complex. Very very important difference. (And I wouldn't even say it's all that complex either if you have basic reading comprehension skills.)
"Complicated" usually carries the connotation of something simple being made confusing or difficult to understand on purpose. "Complex" refers to something that, by its nature, has a lot of nuance and moving parts and requires a bit more intellectual investment to fully unpack. You can usually tell which it is by how you tend to feel when you finally and fully understand the thing. If by the end of understanding something you think something along the lines of "Really? That's it? Then why didn't he just say that?", then usually the thing was complicated. If instead you end up thinking, "Yo! This is so dope! I didn't think it could work that way, but now I see how.", then usually it's complex. I tend to get the latter vibes from JJK

But before its pretty good balance.

At the risk of sounding like an elitist, I think for a lot of people that say JJK is "too complicated" is because they haven't read as much manga. While series like JJK, HxH, and even Undead Unluck have complicated power systems and fights, others like DBZ, BC, and to an extent MHA (minus certain Deku fights) are much more simple. So people's expectation on what a battle shonen can be (along with individual preferences) skewed in what they see as complex. The reason I said "manga" rather than battle shonen for my initial statement is there are manga out there that are way wordier and more complex. World Trigger has whole arcs (like the current one) that's much more battle tactics than fights and with deceptively simple power system that has much more depth than initially presented. Its so heavily characters explaining things to each other. As a fan psychological series like Death Note & Tomodachi Game both complexity and wordiness is much more than a standard battle shonen. One of my favorite niche series, Battle Game in 5 seconds, has the protagonist ability be "whatever the other person thinks it is". As you can imagine the fights get intricate with that alone. So I really think people just need to read more manga.

Jjk system is not complicated nor is it very complex. Its pretty straight foward to understand. The problem is gege kind of goes over board with explaining stuff making long paragraphs and pages. This can lead to confusion and ppl not understanding stuff if you know what i mean

It isnt complicated per se but the expositions and the like are typically long winded, contain points that didnt need to be mentioned and the many translation problems it has had to deal with. Another issue is people's own lack of proper understanding of the series' original terms and what they do exactly like RCT, domains and the like.
The thing about these long winded, wordy explanations is that they can hold fake importance to the readers. If you see a panel or even a whole page dedicated to just dialogue, you're likely going to try and treat is as something worth actively remembering, when really, it could just be an overly detailed description of a punch.

Also, i believe there was no other way around hakari's de. Isn't gambling/pachinko machines frowned upon in japan? So ig the editors told gege to not just outright say what hakari's de really is. Could be wrong tho

I was abt to say Gege could've just said the game, n ppl could look up how it works (if they care), but I didn't know it was frowned upon in jp. It makes more sense now.

Gege is super wordy, but sucks at explaining things... How does that work? 😅

I do have a little issue with the way the power system is portrayed as I mean in the beginning it was like a bunch of final bosses vs like level ones I remember Jogo getting violated by Gojo and had no idea he was strong as he was compared to Gojo and would it kill them to focus more on character development the could have tried to make Geto’s arc more tragic by hiving more justifiable reasons and focus more on his perspective as he compèred himself to Gojo and even itadori by talking about how he liven with his streak and some of the difficulties instead of just rushing

I feel like most of the time you can understand the fights without the long explanation, seeing the characters powers in action is enough to understand it more often than not. I still think it's pretty cool to have in depht explanations of the powers tho

It’s more the writing than the power system.
Hunter x Hunter is just 10x better writing. I mean, I think the Chimera Ant arch (for example) has an restless, eerie vibe throughout, setting the tone. Tone is pretty consistent and builds upon its tension. It follows both the main characters and the growth of the ants with perfect pacing. When they finally collide, every fight, perspective, and encounter makes sense. The villains are so well-developed that (if you’re me, at least), you’re crying for Meruem at the end of the arch. That’s good writing. Jjk doesn’t have the same emotional weight because the writing doesn’t have enough foundation, buildup, and layers. It doesn’t matter how complicated things are imo if the foundation and pacing is there. The pacing is hella off with jjk.
And there might be foundation to the plot, but every backstory is used as a shocking reveal later, so the info you’re getting is so patchy and all over the place.

Bleach is also really more complicated than people think. But they rather talk as if Ichigo's power up is just asspulls after another.
    Guys, Bleach is relatable

It’s overly wordy for wtf it is- a series of nothing but fights.
One piece can get wordy too, but it works there cause OP has so many different moving parts. Not so with Jjk . It’s literally nothing but 1v1s. So its wordy nature is overkill for the type of story it’s trying to be.

I can't recall anything important to know in OP that was revealed in a lore book and not within the actual story.
But honestly, I don't think your arguments actually did much to dispel the criticisms. Namely that it tends to be too complicated and tends to be just fights. There is a level of unnecessary complexity to fights, and the fact that you said you can skim and still understand them proves the point that all the words and explanations are entirely frivolous and overdone. And your segment about teh current HxH arc and how it gets into details about all the different factions and groups while I agree with, i think most people would rather explanations be able people or to enhance the world building and story than to just be explaining a fight. The former has ramifications in making the world seem more "real" and lived in, while the latter is only relevant to the current fight and stops being afterwards
The thing is, the way JJK fans imagine it to be is the way HxH actually is
