    👆 The Rode M5 patched pair of stereo pencil condensors are a great way to record high quality stereo sounds without breaking the bank! Of course there are loads of options that a matched pair open up beyond the usual XY configurations. Try experimenting with the Glyn Johns technique or even just micing the snare from above and below. You can get creative with the M5s because they sound so natural, what you hear is what you get!

    That man has obviously never seen a goose. That's not a gooseneck, that's just a mic clip.

    Just getting into sound recording and came across this set of mics. I’m very impressed. Although the choice of guitar and the huge sound absorption on the walls must play a part in the recorded sound sounding good.

    Thanks for a really good demonstration with audio testing we can use. Practical demonstrations like your guitar and drum tests are very much appreciated. By the way, considering how small these mics are, you can make your own sturdy case with a dollar store pencil box and some foam.

    Bought these a couple years ago. For the money, these are fantastic. I would even recommend them over some much more expensive pencil mics.

      They don't distort when recording loud sounds? There is no pad button so am worried about kit being too loud for mics

      Manofmanytallets
      I've used them as overheads for about 5 months now. Only once did I get slight distortion. To be fair...it was my fault because I was recording a bit hot, on accident. So, no..you won't miss a pad switch if you set your levels correctly.

    I have two sets of M5s and they're nothing short of brilliant. I like my drums to ring. Nothing worse than cardboard-box toms and flat kick-drums. I want a boom bass, not a bang. I want as much sustain as possible and the Rodes give me that. I also use Audix D-series as well as the AD15s with roll-offs depending on where I record. Rode Mics are my go to kit. In my living room I sport a Yamaha Maple Custom Absolute 9-piece kit. All the toms get a D-series mic, both hi-hats get an M5 and depending on the sound I want to get the overheads are either the M5, NT-1 or the Audix AD15s. For the Bass I use the NT-1 or Audix D6 in a port. Sometimes I'll throw in an M5 too. An NT5 on the snare and an Audix D1 on the bottom. This works perfectly for getting the sounds I want and need to have. I record through a Soundcraft MFXi-16 directly into a Tascam flash recorder. No effects, no EQ either. Rode mics are the bomb and nothing short of it.

    I've tried to use these as overheads a lot since it were the only mics available at the time. The drummer I recorded hits his cymbals very hard and that made these mics almost useless imho. They tended to only record the cymbals and the rest of the kit was overly bright and not very audible. Sure it would work better with a drummer that has a softer touch but didn't work for me at all. Moved on to large diaphram condensers and I am a much happier man now.

    What's the use of the limiter anyway when you can just ask the artist to perform as loud as he can for a few seconds,make that the 0 db level and you should be good to go. Nice vid by the way, gives a good impression of the M5. And I think 1/2 inch is a reasonable alternative between, say, NT1000 and NT5.

      +Kees den Heijer
      A)
      because you can use it as an expander - get the signal you want in and then boost the the level you want (with out effecting the sensitivity of the microphone by using the pre-amp ).
      B)
      Drums also typically tend to creep in loudness through out a performance and can have a range of amplitude volume wise depending on the type of song stile. The limiter insure that everything post effect unit dose not get damaged if the drummer decides to get louder than what was original accounted for.
      C)
      In the digital world running over 0 causes fairly major distortion in the recording - something you can sort of can get away with on tape recorders.

    Thanks for a great and persuasive video. As well as for musical contexts, would you recommend using one (or both of these) in a secondary role for recording vlogs in a studio, atrached to a camera like the Canon M50, but obviously with some kind of audio device between to give phantom power?? Thanks, if you had the time to advise would be grateful...

    Awesome mics come well packaged and sound good.The only two problems i have is one. The mic clips are very tight almost two tight and you have to force one side in to clamp it. Instead of the (i love rode sticker) it would have been more helpful to show a visual diagram of how to do this since you don't always figure it out until later, even though the manual does mention it sort of how to do it. Or a you tube video lol. # two problem is this is my second rode set of mics purchase and there's a small dent and scratch with paint missing on one of them on the front grill small but still the quality control is lacking. My other mic was a Ntk from 2011 and i had some kinda yellow glue ball bouncing in and out of the diaphragm that i had to take apart myself and take out. Great mics but I'm the buyer rode, stop saying pass it and sending it out to the costumer.This mite be my last rode purchase after these two incidents.

    A bit of language fussiness:
    A gooseneck is a flexible-bendy shaft that lets you position a microphone (or lamp, etc.) relative to a fixed point (mic stand base, lamp base, etc.). The thing you use to fasten a mic to a mic stand is called a mic clip or mic mount. There may be other names, but gooseneck isn't one of them.

    does it have a power light.why. nice to known if it,s still there in the dark can be seen from a distant and you can keep an eye on things, it can also be a pain . but do any of the mic reviewed light. close up,s would of been nice better than waving your hands around and a visual display of the sound, software spectrum analyser. then you can compare against some bench mark. your review are good but better is better. cheers

    • @JohnBuser

      The Nt5's have two main advantages. Changeable capsules and a lower noise floor. I believe the nt5 comes with a cardoid capsule, but you have the ability to replace the capsule with an omnidirectional capsule instead of buying a separate omnidirectional mic. There are also other third-party manufacturers that make capsules for the nt5 which can sound better depending on what your style is. They also have a lower noise floor, so if you a re recording drums it wont matter as much since they are loud, but even something like a piano it will make a difference. The hiss in the background will be more present on the m5's then the nt5. Depending on your purposes it may or may not be worth it. Personally i went with the m5's.

    has any one else had issues with the rode m5 where if your using a Neutric NC3FXX connector it grabs on to the m5's connector and pulls out the internal PCB of the mic?
    Just had one die this way - and the others that I have seem to be not to far behind falling apart in the same manner.

      What connectors are you using? note this is an issue with the design of the M5 when used with the industry standard Neutric XX connectors.

      @jouebien 8 лет назад

      hahah those aren't Neutric their low end cheep Chinese clones of the Neutric X series. I'd take the lower end Yongsheng Neutric connectors over cheep generic Chinese crap.
      The Neutric XX series connector is industry strand and for the M5 not to work with them is a problem.

    • @jacinthclifton636
      @jacinthclifton636 8 лет назад

      I suppose it can be, I have a good 20-30 cables with Neutric connectors but I don't use them with the M5's so I can't claim that is not an issue with mine as well. Thanks for the heads up though, I'll make sure not to use my cables with Neutric connectors with these microphones.
