I think I actually heard the Oktavas have more low end but the Rode M5s sounded like they have more punchy mids but less low end bass which may actually be a more usable sound for the usual intention of overhead pencil mics!
Probably more down to my inexperience mixing than anything else. But if they performed similarly to the Oktavas, then you could say they're providing similar performance for a bit less money. Thanks for watching!

What was the position of the overhead mics?
In the kit test you can see the right hand mic; they were set up to the 10 and 2 o'clock of the kit centered on the snare about 4 feet out.
