- Last month, Ireland blew past the United States by bringing its women's rights into the 21st century. Allana Harkin was there to see how they managed it.
This actually made me cry (in a good way). I’m a mom of two boys who needed to be conceived through IVF. Nothing could make you more aware of how bs it is to say life begins at conception. My first cycle I had 12 eggs that fertilized. That resulted in 1 child. I had another cycle that failed even though we had 10 eggs fertilize. The third IVF we had another 12 eggs and 1 pregnancy. So, 34 conceptions, 2 pregnancies. And that’s normal. We had a male factor issue. I had no fertility issues. I also know women find out at week 18 (the earliest an amnio is possible) find out their wanted pregnancy isn’t viable. After that heartbreak, they then have to cross picket lines of protestors calling them murderers. No. Everyone NEEDS to let women determine for themselves whether to have 3 rounds of IVF for 2 babies or to terminate an embryo for whatever reason. The VAST majority of abortions are done early - before 8 weeks or for medical reasons. The judgement needs to stop.
Shie H. Amen, sister!
Thanks for telling your story
Hear here!
Love for yah sis!!
I'm so glad that you have two wonderful children after all of that trauma. I've seen what people go through with IVF...so difficult.
Thank you for your observation about life "beginning at conception". Conservatives are silent about the millions of fertilized embryos out there. I guess once the purview of "life begins at conception" is outside of a woman's body, all bets are off. Private IVF centers are not battlegrounds for abortion protestors, just women's bodies.
"I suppose that's life"
"well it's...actually death"
GET HIM ALLANA
Except it's not him that's going to die is it? :)
I spent the last six years working on this campaign, and even though we were pretty confident of a yes result, we never imagined it'd be a landslide. Like, a friend of mine who worked the social media said everyone on her team would have laughed in your face if you suggested we'd get a bigger margin of victory than marraige equality had, with a bigger voter turnout to boot. We'd a room rented in a bar on the Saturday night, and everyone was amazed and incredulous at what we'd achieved.
And now, we're back to work on the campaign. Repeal was hugely important, but the law of the land still allows for abortion only in the most extreme circumstances, and still has a maximum prison sentence of 14 years for anyone who 'illegally procures a miscarraige' or assists in the act thereof. Around 200 Irish people have either travelled to the UK or continental Europe for an abortion, or smuggled in the pills since the referendum results.
Legislation has been proposed but it won't be enacted for months yet, and we need to continue mobilising people to lobby their TDs, to keep the pressure on, and to continue to counter the anti-choice activists, who have been constantly displaying graphic and inaccurate imagery of dead foetuses and stillborn babies, blown up to many times their real size all around the country, even in the weeks following their defeat at the polls.
Lorcan Nagle I wish you guys all the best for your fight ✊
Bravo!
Congrats Lorcan! Great job. You're an example to the world that is falling into regression, oppression and self-imposed authoritarianism.
Thanks for the update and keeping us informed Lorcan Nagle! I hope the tide keeps coming
WOW good job IRELAND! I am so proud of you all.
I'm not even Irish and this video made me cry. I'm so happy for Irish women!!!❤️❤️❤️
Well done, ladies. Both here and abroad. (PS Full frontal deserves a full hour!! No one covers women's issues like you!!!)
w1ldflwr572 agreed!!!
w1ldflwr572 or LGBTQ, or Muslim, or Sikh, or Black, or Hispanic/Latino, or Native American you name it really!
Unapologetically Sassy All true!
Love Sam’s commitment to reporting on women’s issues!
Nice to see see that history is still moving forward somewhere.
charging method man i think you guys made trump into a straw man that must be opposed but you miss the good he does too. Im not a lickass either i think he got played by north korea and the tariffs were too extreme but pulling out the iran deal was good. My point is that he will proceed to make genius power moves and idiotic mistakes and you should make an unbiased decision on if what he did was good for america as a whole
Err? Forward? Killing kids is forward? Nice
If you're against abortion, don't have one.
Wasn't that easy?
It also seems that the people most against abortion are the ones who don't actually need them (men and sometimes older women).
The concept of free will has its limitations for Conservative religious fundamentalists, yours & ours.
Pro-lifers: “Triggered.”
brilliant!!
Except guns affect many bodies. Abortions only affect the woman’s body.
Thanks for coming and doing this piece on our Referendum. I'm so proud of the fact that despite outside interference from American Pro Lifers, we still voted by 66.4% in favour. Proud of my fellow citizens and their capacity to see through the BS!
Proud of you as well! But kindly refrain from using the term pro lifers. Better to use a phrase such as forced birther’s. Or anti-choicers.
They didn't even get into the whole "home to vote" movement on social media. Made me cry for days - so many amazing men and women, coming back to Ireland from faraway places like Australia just to vote!
What is really sad is that if you are Irish but leave Ireland for 18 months you lose your voting rights entirely. I went home just to be there, but I couldn't vote as I had to emigrate during the financial crash to find work.
I was just in Dublin and I was shocked that this passed. There were a metric ton of ads to keep it. 2 story tall hanging pictures of aborted fetuses hanging on buildings and stuff. Watching the conservatives pull out all the stops to accomplish something and fail so thoroughly warmed my heart. Just remember: we outnumber them and we still live in a democracy. If both sides come out to vote, we'll win every time.
Its about time civil rights beat out religion. They've ruled long enough. Time to address everybody, not just the believers.
I actually cried. This was very powerful. God.
Rifki N R I was crying in the courtyard of the Castle that afternoon - there's nothing like feeling 35 years LIGHTER to make you feel good!
@@colettecarroll9371 so happy for you. Truly. I cried just watching this...
I can't even imagine how many brilliant, beautiful Irish countrywomen died, or even "just" suffered miserably being forced to seek out unsafe, unregulated reproductive health care.
"This is what happens when you get out and vote, when you stick your neck out, you know? You can actually make change"
Gosh I teared up. I wish the rest of the world (specially women) would think like that.
So glad they won the referendum.
As a born and raised Texan, I honest to God blushed and shame-cringed when she said the campaign was traced back to Texas... Sorry, y'all... >.>
HEYBabs! Really? I'm born and raised Texan, too, and all that crossed my mind was, "Yup. Sounds like something Texas would do."
Oh, I'm not surprised. It's definitely something we'd do. It's still embarrassing though! XD
I am so proud of Irish women and I am not even Irish. So happy for my sisters out there!
usa, remember vote november 6th. Every vote matters.
Yes for gods sake! Go vote in November and make sure Democrats win both the House and the Senate.
I'm not even American and feel motivated to vote on November 6th...
I will for Republicans
It would be nice if our votes counted but they dont
....and if you're republican, remember to vote on November 7th.
Oh I'm so glad you did a piece on this!
" I could die happy tonight" that was really touching🍀
I'm a [Yes vote supporting] Scotsman living in Australia and this story made me cry. Congratulations Ireland. Catholicism and Conservatism MUST end all over the world!
13thAMG Could not have said it better!!
Umm...I think you'll find a good portion (read about 90 percent) of those 1.4 million people who voted yes were Catholic. Catholics who considered, thought, and voted, and still went to Mass on the following Sunday. Singling out one religion, tends to make one viewed as a bigot.
@Lian McGuire
I'm coming more from a science and history perspective. ALL superstitions, myths and snake oil sales cons - be they catholicism, talking snake stories or magic healing stones - must end. It's the 21st friggin century.
We no longer live in a time when information and public education was controlled at the behest of the local/national/global witch doctor - be he a rain dancing tribesman or a so-called 'Pope'!
Access to facts such as medical sciences that mean abortions can be done for perfectly good ethical reasons in a safe clinical manner vs being told fear myths that an invisible skydaddy will set you alight and let you burn for eternity, is now a reality.
As for singling out catholicism, Ireland has been under a brutal Catholic regime of thought and moral male dominated control - especially in relation to women - by twisted minded males who have never had a woman, know nothing of a woman's body or experiences and are unqualified to comment, for as long as I can remember.
So my reference was in context of the nation's dominant superstition itself and relevant to the video's topic.
Alana: “Their children were often taken from them, Who would do that?!”
Sessions: “Hi.”
Alana: “Oh.”
Samantha Bee, you and your show are the best
Happier women = happier society
This isn't a matter of hapiness. It's a matter of public health and personal choice, a way to know how much the goverment thinks it self entitled to rule what you can and can't do with your own body. My country is discussing now to lift the ban to abortion, so let's have hope for Argentina!
The fact that some of my fellow Americans thought it was perfectly fine to try to interfere with this will never not be absolutely disgusting to me. I was pulling for Ireland to repeal, having somewhat of an attachment to Irish music and dance traditions and strongly debating trying to move there someday, but like... it's their choice, my dudes, not yours. Just like someone else's abortion is their choice, not yours. Funny that that attitude of "I know what's best for your situation better than you do" would permeate things beyond abortion itself.
As a woman this makes me so happy!!!
As of May 25th, Ireland is back on my bucket list!
Melinda Dunn Awesome! Have no doubt that their tourism will soar.
Totally agree!
Yeah we voted yes for our tourism sector, that's exactly why we voted 👎
Just so incredibly proud of Irish ladies and gentlemen who made this happen, genuinely cried watching this video. I was lucky enough to be able to have an abortion in a country which reserved no judgement for me, it was my choice but morally distorting nonetheless. No body should ever tell a woman that she is being careless with that decision, the amount of hormones overriding your brains, telling you to go against your best judgment, it is close to impossible to bare. If any woman here had to go through the same ordeal I did - my heart goes out to you! Sam Bee, so much love! ❤️
Proud to be Irish. Proud to see a Ireland progressing forward. 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Bee is the best.
I spent a few months in Ireland when I was younger and Irish people will always be close to my heart. Well done!
When Sam was doing the introduction, my first thought was that Ireland has already tried the “Handmaid’s Tale” experiment (with the Magdalene Laundries and other prisons for pregnant women). But I see the Full Frontal crew didn’t miss that, either. Good job, Full Frontal.
This is amazing and so inspiring but women in Northern Ireland still don't have access to abortion services at home, and have to travel to GB at their own financial and emotional expense. We have some of the strictest abortion laws in Europe and CEDAW has stated that these laws violate the human rights of NI women yet the UK government still refuses to extend the Abortion Act to NI. I think that's really important to remember while we celebrate this victory in the south and ensure that we don't lose that momentum.
Definitely, and the pro-choice movement in the Republic is dedicated to helping our comrades in the North. I'm a member of the Abortion Rights Campaign, and we're explicitly an all-island movement. Our primary stated goals are repeal of the 8th, and extension of the 1967 act to Northern Ireland. One down, one to go.
wow this comments section is a lot better then expected
So one point less for the patriarchy.
It was more of a referendum on the Catholic Church. They've had an iron-clad grip on Irish society since the country's inception, including measures like the 8th Amendment, which are now thankfully being slowly dismantled.
Who am I too tell someone they can or cannot have an abortion. How many baby's have these anti-abortion people adopted? Are they willing too pay too support these unwanted children until their out of the system? Could the real issue be that these people are afraid of being out populated by some other group of people?
Old Knight I grew up in the 1950s. The saying goes "Keep her pregnant and barefooted." Means how to keep her dependent and under your thumb. Giving women control over their reproduction flies in the face of those who want to keep women subserviant and third class. Has absolutely nothing to do with valuing the lives of the fetuses. That is the sham of the so-called "pro-life" crowd as they have never done anything to make having more children easier and have in fact done everything to make it harder. They don't love babies, they love oppression of women.
This has been my 2nd favorite piece from the show, only because I'm Puertorrican and that show was amazing! Unlike the PR show this left me full of hope. Thanks for taking on the subjects most other shows gloss over.
There was this dentist who died during a critical child birth few years ago, I think that kind of galvanised the movement anew.
I'll drink to that!
And let's face it.. so will they.
Hey, now, I'm Irish and we aren't all lushes. But I would drink to this as well!!
I'm happy to drink one for ya! Or 6.
Meanwhile, the US is running full steam into the past.
This video has helped me understand my mother a little bit better.
Patrick Barry why she's still sad she couldn't abort you?
She died two years ago.
Ian Oomen....just saying..you can take back words y'know.
There's still an option to apologize here.
I am so thankful you are covering this Monumental moment and doing a far better job then American news media sadly.
I've been telling people about Amnesty International for a year now. So proud of any group that helps heal the world of this idiocy.
How right those men were, they said women should make their own choice. Absolutely, men wouldn't let women make choices for them.
I will cry happy relieved tears about that day forever.
When that bloke at the end said that it "poisons everything" it reminded me of Christopher Hitchens because this abortion ban stemmed from religion.
Oh yes, Christopher. Right up there in my mind with such luminaries as Michael More and Hillary Clinton. May he rot.
Hitchens was anti-choice, tho.
Christian religion maybe. Abortion was allowed and practiced under Ireland's original religion, just saying.
Why do you care what someone else does with their body? It's their body.
This was such a great piece, I love that Mike was very briefly on camera to prove he went
Bravo. Shared. Excellent news coverage with excellent coedy asides, to make it bearable.
I'm so glad at the end of the video they now link to act 4.
That's wonderful. I have family here in Canada who were in those laundries. I have other family who were mutilated while giving birth in the Irish Family Centres while their newborns were ripped away only to be discovered decades later in mass graves.
This helps to ensure Irish women will never have to go through that again. That being said, nothing can undo what has been done yo those that have suffered.
My thoughts go out to them and I hope they're happy, healthy and safe.
This is the *most important video on the internet today...okay second most important...that raccoon made it safe guys.
GMan Gee... Bah ha ha ha ha ha ha! You win!
Allana Harkin is hilarious! And I'm very glad the 8th was repealed! Well done, Ireland!
I'm not sure "abortion" is the best wording. Termination of Pregnancy is the most commonly accepted and hopefully inflicts less trauma on the patient.
Let's call it the right to "a fun little trip to cancel an 18 year subscription" if you're concerned with the name
It only inflicts trauma because it's been stigmatized to bits... no point in giving in to that stigma.
Ian Oomen
Also the fact that you would call it a "fun little trip" is obscene to me.
Pretty sure that was sarcasm.
@@feebeedoc78
I'm pretty sure it was a poor attempt at sarcasm, Ian Oomen has made another joke about a dead mother somewhere.
Everyone with a brain knows that abortions are painful and necessary sometimes.
Excellent coverage!
No Supreme Court dictating issues. Give it to the people
One of the most amazing things I've seen in a long time. Thanks for the good news. I needed this.
Never been prouder of my ancestry!
Proud of killing baby’s?
Proud of killing baby's... what? What do the babies possess that I am killing? I'm on pins and needles to see how this sentence ends!
Never been more ashamed of my people.
I just got an ad for this video from the Donald Trump campaign to help in their poll...
Mic Pan, did you also get the one to sign his birthday card? Oh the irony of being Spammed on RUclips!
every segment a winner \m/
Thank you Sam. ^.^
So, it was some Texas based website trying to meddle in Irish abortion referendum?
How about Brazilian based sect influencing law making?
Anyone else notice the green blazer at the end?
now that ireland has done it, NI need to do it. May need to make NI like Ireland
YAAAAAAAAAS, IRELAND!!! CONGRATULATIONS!!! 💚🍀
ABORTO LEGAAAAAAL EN EL HOSPITAAAAAAAAAL #abortolegalseguroygratuito
anyway, Sam. you should totally do a piece in Argentinas fight for abortion. it wasn't a vote, it happened through manifestation alone
Congrats on the lower house vote last night! Solidarity from Ireland and hope that the bill will pass the upper house soon!
Far out, another Allana with my spelling. Hells yes!
05:10 that was the best awkward high five I've ever witnessed. Thank you Denis. For voting yes, but also for that golden moment of TV.
That was great! Thanks 💗
I’m a Nigerian & I got really emotional because this is a human story. ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
I’ve lived in Ireland my whole life and it was great to see this episode as I’m with you 😁 wish I saw the crew though
Nice touch using the green jacket in the end.
Great piece ! How about a follow up piece on the fight for the same change of law in Northern Ireland ?
Welcome to the Future, Ireland! :)
What future you talking about? The one were all the other countries have voted for this for their women? What future are you from?
1:56 It took me three or four tries to understand him when he said "Magdalene laundry," because I've never heard that term before. What a fun trip down the rabbit hole that turned out to be.
I loved how the little girl was laughing and clapping, and she didn't even know what she has to be clapping about, but man, oh man...did she have every right to be clapping.
Thanks, from Ireland.
i could die tonight... ☺️☺️☺️
What a fabulous segment! I still think, if you look at the details of it, this new law still only allows abortion up to a certain number of weeks. So even with the so-called legalization, that Indian woman would have still died when she was denied her abortion by the friendly Catholics of Ireland.
Did anyone else get an onerous Prager U advertisement on this video?
No, I got an ad to wish Trump a happy birthday. I politely declined.
I got one to take Trump's media bias survey, so... close enough
Let them waste their money on the ads. But why would they want to on such a low rated show?😏
I down vote and report every Prager u ad i see
Very touching.
I could die happy. What a gem that man is. He's my hero!
I don't think that abortion is a matter that should be put on vote, or even debate. It is a right and a personal choice in which no one else has a say but the person who is pregnant.
Um...why do men even get a vote!?!! Imagine if there was a referendum about whether vasectomies should be banned; would men want women voting on it?
Allana is so awesome and cutting. And her hair looks great.
Solid piece! I totally cried at the end!
"We are kind of addicted to Oppression in this country."
"What's the payoff of Oppression?"
"Probably Alcoholism...?" 🤔 🙁 🍺🍺🍺🍺🍺🍺 😵
And the woman's friend who has to carry basically a miscarriage 9 months to "birth" a dead baby/tumor basically...that is horrible. Is there some medical thing that could be bad for her chances for having kids for forcing her to not purge and get over mentally sooner...?
This is fab! GRMA!
Sharon McMenamin Tá fáilte romhat.
So proud of those who turned up and made it happen.
I'm proud of my ancestral homeland for finally progressing as a society!
Love ya Sam!! Keep on keepin on
I'm Irish and subtitles would have helped :-)
Speaking of shameful, VERY recent history, Remember Savita.
(died in Ireland in 2012 during a long, painful miscarriage that may not have killed her had she been allowed the abortion she requested)
Why label them as 'acts' if you post thm out of order?
4:48 OKAY YUP THERE ARE THE TEARS
Going with the angle of interviewing a bunch of men who voted Yes to repeal is so good. We all saw the women, but it's good to know that men were out there supporting too.
Honestly, I'm so proud of Ireland. I was watching the results closely and I expected a narrow win for repeal but the fact that two-thirds of Ireland voted yes---it was unexpected and incredible.
They’ll have to do Argentina next, they just legalized abortion too
#togetherforyes #werepealedthe8th
Worked for the campaign selling badges and did what I could I’m so happy with what my country chose.
Good job!! Thank you for caring about women and children! You helped make the world a better place!
Great stuff
It's great to see that something good is happening somewhere. Cheers
Don't forget Savita Halappanavar.
Look, it's Richard Dawkins' brother at the 5 minute mark. Amirite?
