  • In this language challenge, Klajd (Albanian speaker) faces Mahtab (Persian speaker) with a list of words and phrases that share a common root between the two languages. Persian and Albanian are both Indo-European languages that have some similarities in their vocabularies. Albanian occupies an independent branch within Indo-European languages. It is an official language in Albania and Kosovo and has minority status in Macedonia, Italy, Romania, Montenegro, and Serbia. Persian (Farsi) is classified as one of the Indo-Iranian languages, primarily spoken in Iran, Afghanistan, and Tajikistan, as well as some other regions in the Middle East and Central Asia.

Love that Albanian guy and I'm from Serbia. By the way almost all the words that were in Albanian we use them too in Serbia. For example Fukara means bad, sleazy, uneducated people, not poor people. We use Dembel to describe a lazy person, even though we don't use it as an adjective but as a noun. Also we use čizme, patlidžan, baba (which means grandmother)...

You should do one with Albanian and Romanian. Albanian has a lot of similar words to Romanian due to the ancient Illyrian/Dacian connection. In fact the capital of Romania(Buchurest) comes from an Albanian word Bukurështë(meaning, "it is beautiful") the two languages split after Latin influence came into Romanian 2000 years ago.

But you are wrong about ancient Greek god names. They All have meanings in Greek , and the etymology (etymology is a Greek word of course , I suppose you understand what it means) of all the Gods names is from simple ancient Greek words. As an example :
      ΠΟΣΕΙΔΩΝ (poseidon) ΠΟΣΙΣ + ΕΙΔΩ (river/waters + responsible )
for more Greek names etymology see
      www.diakonima.gr/2014/08/12/%ce%b5%cf%84%cf%85%ce%bc%ce%bf%ce%bb%ce%bf%ce%b3%ce%af%ce%b1-%ce%b5%ce%bb%ce%bb%ce%b7%ce%bd%ce%b9%ce%ba%cf%8e%ce%bd-%ce%bf%ce%bd%ce%bf%ce%bc%ce%ac%cf%84%cf%89%ce%bd/
ΔΗΜΗΤΡΑ (Demeter) ΔΗ +ΜΗΤΗΡ (earth + mother)
      So stop spreading false claims.
Some scholars of the late 19 century believed that Albanian language comes from the ancient Aiolian dialect of the Hellenic languages (of course it has deviated a lot and has incorporated several Latin and Slavic words) , and there is a book from 1902 that has a lot of hints and proofs about it . Here is the book link www.scribd.com/document/76844618/%CE%91%CE%BB%CE%B2%CE%B1%CE%BD%CE%B9%CE%BA%CE%AC-%CE%AE-%CE%B1%CE%B9-%CF%84%CF%81%CE%B5%CE%B9%CF%82-%CE%B6%CF%8E%CF%83%CE%B1%CE%B9-%CE%B4%CE%B9%CE%AC%CE%BB%CE%B5%CE%BA%CF%84%CE%BF%CE%B9-%CF%84%CE%B7%CF%82-%CE%B5%CE%BB%CE%BB%CE%B7%CE%BD%CE%B9%CE%BA%CE%AE%CF%82-%CE%B3%CE%BB%CF%8E%CF%83%CF%83%CE%B7%CF%82

Ottoman turkish was heavily influenced by persian. That’s all. I guess what I am saying is sth like this: team A says the word in their native language, and if team B could guess the word, then team A would get the point. This way, you would direct the competition toward finding the similarities, rather than differences.

These words are used by Albanians but we know they're slangs and we have Albanian versions of them.

Nice video, but the words you have picked from Albanian are mostly borrowed words from Turkish and Arabic (or even some Farsi related language) or the Latin version of these words in these two languages.

DerrkuciCufo Thank you. You're right. In none of our videos do we claim that all the words being used are originally from that specific language. We do use loan words, and at times words which are not as common as another that gets used in that language, but are being used as part of that vocabulary in the 21st century. The goal with our videos is to show where cultures have crossed paths and where they have similarities, to focus on our commonalities instead of differences.

Nice video! Nice try but from linguistic prospective I am sorry to say that it doesn't meet any scientific requirement, 90% of all words were of osmanli and Arabic roots, which words are loans from the ottoman times and are widespread in Balkans including starting from Greece to Romania in the north. I was surprised by the word Ku which really might have some importance from linguistic point of view, and the word nakhordam also for having the hor and hord inside respectively where hor in slang albanian can mean eaten and hord in might count in greek for being related with the hort-eno verb meaning getting full after eating.
