My mum a teacher. She's also a paranoid schizophrenic so I don't know how that's working out. They usually have one big violent outburst before they are sent to prison. I mean one guy killed his mother and sister and ate their brains so yeah.
Great to see some more Dartmoor! I live in Watford. A couple of weeks ago some mates and I drove to Bovey Tracy (I got a lift), did a bikepack loop via Travistock and Oakhampton. I was on gravel bike, they were on MRBs. Never been to Dartmoor before - it was brilliant! On the last day we got back to Bovey Tracy and I cycled home to Watford on my own. Stayed in pub, then camped then Travel Lodge on way home. Durassic coast was nice and hilly!!👍👍
Hi juliet I live in south Devon and I gotta say when you say "morning"it so bright and breezy, positive and happy !!!any chance of a video of you riding up to haytor rock ,great content as always!!!😎
Thanks for taking me along. Great ride . Monsal and Tissington trails are gravel but don't have the wildness of Dartmoor - but the Wye Valley is amazing - great for a family bike ride with small kids. The New Forest has lots of gravel but as to one contiguous trail? You can off-road round Snowdon which is over 100Km. And the green desert in mid Wales needs exploring
Hi Juliet .... Great video, always nice to sit in my living room watching one of my favourite local places on the TV. I ride to Redlake at least once a month sometimes carrying on north across the Moor to Princetown using bridleways across the open moor, you should try it and make a loop returning down via Burrator. A couple words of advice. It's actually illegal to ride the Redlake railway so just be aware incase anyone challenges you. I've never been challenged but just keep it in mind. Also never swim at Redlake. There's lots of metalwork just beneath the surface which could cause serious injury. Keep cycling ......
Wow, having "that much nature" only half an hour drive from home is amazing. What a scenery and quite some animals wandering freely. Having it all to yourself is always magic, I love my rides through the (Dutch) dunes on Sunday at 08:00 and walks in a local estate around supper time, because at those times there are hardly any people around. Rare moments in the area where I live. But your landscapes win 😀, very nice!
The Ridgeway between Goring and (the Roman road into) Wanborough is nearly 40 km - it crosses a couple of tarmac roads, but other than that it's all gravel (a couple of sections have been paved with concrete - not very smooth concrete either!). About 600 m of elevation and really lovely scenery into the Valley of the White Horse or the Berkshire Downs (and some interesting Neolithic monuments too).
I live in sunny Italy but spend lots of time in Ivybridge, the town at the start of the Puffing Billy. I've ridden up to Redlake scores of times right out of my front door and you're right, it's awesome. It gets pretty rough, particularly on the way back down as you pick up speed, and is often waterlogged towards the end. This summer I repurposed a 1992 Rocky Mountain Hammer Race hardtail basically for that very track, adding drop bars, a rigid fork, a 2.4 inch front tyre, and still got shaken to pieces. It made me wish for suspension for the first time on a gravel bike, or maybe I'm just getting old. You don't complain so you're clearly made of sterner stuff than me. Yeah, a bit warmer riding in Italy but Dartmoor's in a class of its own.
Incredible scenery, Juliet. And it's so crazy that there are so many wild ponies and cows just lounging around where you are allowed to for -- very cool
Nice video. I rode out to Red lake from Plymouth in July. A warm day, and camped overnight (it rained!), but a bottle of cider helped me through that. The lake was warm and quite a few people out there. As you say,t he ponies are gorgeous, and really give Dartmoor it's character. I have an old book about the history of the rail;way and pit, which is an interesting read.
Thanks for the video! I remember when I was in my teens, ages ago, and I escaped with my friends in our 10 speed bikes with our fishing rods tied to the frames of our bikes and traveled to a lake some 11 km away from our homes try to catch some fish...Amazing place and memories that you triggered! I wish I will be able to do it in my AMP Research B4 with my son in my M400!
I’ve been really enjoying your videos. I’ve been struggling with lung fitness since getting Covid in March. It’s been brilliant ‘coming along’ on your rides. You’ve encouraged me to get back out on my gravel bike - even if I do have to push it up steep hills 🙄
If you want a good stretch of gravel riding try the Ridgeway from Avebury in Wilts to Streatley in Berks. 68k of chalky Downland with only about 1k of tarmac. There and many great rides off this main route as the whole area is covered in bridleways and byways. The chalk contains flints so be prepared. Enjoy the ride.
Great vlog once again, there is a lovely gravel ride from Northampton to Market Harborough it’s an old disused railway track and is around 17 miles long 😊
It's called the Brampton Valley Way, you need an extremely good light because there are two very long tunnels. It is a good ride though and worth the effort.
Lovely video. You have reintroduced me to cycling after a few years of running and injuries. Bought a gravel bike in the summer. Much easier on the joints and you can stop and enjoy the scenery. With running you just keep flogging on.
Nice scenery. Wide flat expansive. And, always interesting to see on your rides different foliage, trees, shrubs, etc. than I would see where I live in United States. Even your cows look different than over here.
Furry cows' were a novelty ! looked like a straightforward easy track.. Good opportunity for some lovely crosswinds near the top on some gusty days.. Might get some really long Foresty Commission gravel trails up somewhere like Kielder Forest in the NE... Hard to define gravel in the Uk... Totally ridable without getting bounced off by big rocks I guess .. lol..
Aces all-around, Juliet. The look on your face enjoying the solitude & peace is just the bees knees! When you were speaking on your hands being cold I wondered if you packed gloves -- and then there they were. What kind of gloves are you wearing at the end? Thanks for the scenery and the awesome videos!!
Some nice views from the track but its got a bit rough these days. I probably won't be doing it again until the day I can afford a full suspension e-bike! 'Mordor' is the old spoil tip for the clay pits you were going to swim in. There were dragonflies chasing around the shoreline when I went there. 'Redlake' is the name of the stream that drains that area. Nearby you can also cycle up the Avon from Shipley Bridge, past Avon Dam and pick up the Abbots Way across Lambs Down towards Buckfastleigh.
First did the puffing billy track to red lake back in 1983 I see that is still as rough as I remember it my old six speed road didn’t make it easy . On another note you could head off on the old tramway towards the Avon dam that would make it a longer ride check it out
Sorry if has been suggested, but if you tweak Sustrans Route 47 from Ynysybwl to Resolven you get 35km of uninterrupted gravel. OK strictly speaking you have to cross a couple of roads and maybe 200m of a broken tarmac service road above Maerdy but essentially it's premium gravel riding. Loads of opportunities for extra loops too. Highly recommended!
The Tissington and Monsal trails are pretty dull. Lovely scenery, yes, but not at all challenging to ride, which is why they're so popular with families. The High Peak trail is a little more challenging, either a long steep climb or descent depending on which way you do it. Perhaps the Pennine Bridleway might be more to your liking Juliet....abound 180 miles (if missing out the 2 loops) and 20k feet of climbing. I haven't done it, but I will one day!
Hi Juliet, I live in Plymouth and this is a route that i haven't tried out. I think it will have to wait until next year, it can be pretty bleak up there now. Thanks for the video.
Not sure what kind of trail you're looking to count, but Altuish to Ullapool is about 70km of all gravel landrover track. At the easier end the Formartine way is a mostly gravel rail trail from Aberdeen to Frazerburgh and Peterhead, in the ~60km gravel area.
The South Downs Way is an epic ride. Very popular, well marked and great mixed terrain. Much better than the Monsal and High Peak trails which I ride most weeks.
Try riding from Burator (Quarry car park) to Princetown on the old railway then down to South Hessary Tor and towards Nuns Farm to Sheeps Tor village and back to the car park. Off road / gravel most of the way. 16 mile loop.
Great route. After watching this I rode the trail myself at the weekend and it was so good. I had slightly better weather than you, and took my Hardtail MTB too. Thanks the the videos and keep ‘em coming.
Hi Juliet. My local playground is the New Forest. Many many miles of gravel through woodlands and open heath, although interspersed with short sections of tarmac road. Would be more than happy to show you round or suggest some routes (sorry don't do Strava).
Walked to Redlake in the summer well May is was stunning in the sun. You and carry on from Redlake to Princetown via the Abbots Way more of an MTB ride.
Hi Juliet; I live in Denmark. The same situation with the weather. I you want to ride, just be properly prepared. If I only want to ride in good weather here. I would never get out.
Ha, I rode that exact route a few years ago - (not for a swim though) I got to the lake and my hub split - So i had to walk/run/scoot all the way back! Again never saw another soul, exept the Dartmoor wildlife! it is a shame that the trail doesn't actually go anywhere.
It does look peaceful there. I could brood and write for a long time there. Your cheeriness and the isolation there are quite a juxtaposition! What did you think about while you were there?
That bar tape looks like pro Aurora? sure is stunning Juliet, one day. The High Peak surely has to qualify, cant think of any pathed /asphalt sections, that comes in a 17 plus miles.
Very fine. I love the ponies as well. So cool to see. Only problem is riding home in the dark off the low moors... ponies don't have lights on their butts, you didn't get a lot of warning they were in the middle of the road!
The Flitch Way is 15 miles and it's gravel the whole way. Actually a 15 mile green tunnel. But how do you define gravel as the South Downs Way is 100 miles. We have some huge gravel roads here in NZ and they are actually roads complete with large logging trucks.
Come cycle some more of The Clay Trails near Eden Project, there's mile a of off road cycling to be had! Sky Spur amongst all the routes is brilliant (although I've not plucked up the courage to cycle it yet, only run and walk it)
You missed the best area though 😉 Carn Grey Sprint, Baal Pit, Sky Spur & Drummers Hill, they're the most fun for cycling 😎👊🏻👍🏼 (plus there's a super cool lake which is mentioned in The Wild Guide for Wild Swimming on Drummers Hill 😉)
FYI, according to my father who is a landowner in Dartmoor National Park and was, a long time ago, a livestock auctioneer at Tavistock market, the ponies are not wild and used to be annually rounded up and sold, until prices dropped and I believe its not worth doing at the moment. Interesting hey!!!!
I come to the UK once or twice a year and stay with my mother in Teignmouth. I try and ride but it always seems to be raining and the roads are soooo narrow. I have full respect for UK cyclists.

I'm a teacher and I've been using your "Mooorning" intro with my morning zoom classes. I think it's cheery, upbeat, positive, and fun. 😊
As long as it’s done with an English accent!
Indeed it is! I remember my graduate school days in Boston, USA and there was a Good Morning Boston! Shout on Kiss 105! Brings out the good memories!
My mum a teacher. She's also a paranoid schizophrenic so I don't know how that's working out. They usually have one big violent outburst before they are sent to prison. I mean one guy killed his mother and sister and ate their brains so yeah.
Her intro lifts your day! I see why you use it!
Great to see some more Dartmoor!

Ah nice, sounds like a brilliant trip!
Do you say "hello" to every animal you pass? I love it! I do the same!
Me too
I do!
@@JulietElliottsChannel Me too!
Yes, I do this too.
Or ‘stay where you are!’ to rabbits and squirrels 😂
Yes come to North Carolina...we have great gravel roads and great mountain roads! Love your videos as well as your smile.
The brampton valley way in Northampton is about 22km one way on an old train line. Goes through two tunnels as well. It’s my home county as well
Nice cafe in welland park in mkt Harborough too :-)
Hi juliet I live in south Devon and I gotta say when you say "morning"it so bright and breezy, positive and happy !!!any chance of a video of you riding up to haytor rock ,great content as always!!!😎
Can’t wait to gravel in Dartmoor next year! So beautiful!...I’ve started planning already!!
You’ll love it
Hi Juliet, thank you for the video and taking us along on your ride, love your energy! No matter the weather you are always pleasant and cheery :)
Ah thanks, I just love cycling , it cheers me up
Thanks for taking me along. Great ride . My daughter and I walked a section of Puffing Billy yesterday. The weather was awful but its such an amazing place.

Kielder, Northumberland has some pretty lengthy gravel stretches 😊

The southdowns way is 100 miles from Winchester to Eastbourne. That’s nearly all gravel paths.
Awesome that you can ride on your own in such remote area. Loads of awesome looong gravel roads in South Africa
I live in sunny Italy but spend lots of time in Ivybridge, the town at the start of the Puffing Billy. I used to live on the Devon and Cornwall border when I was young and cant wait to be able to move back.
Incredible scenery, Juliet. And it's so crazy that there are so many wild ponies and cows just lounging around where you are allowed to for -- very cool
You have breathtaking places in the UK. Sad the weather isn't sunnier but we can't have it all!

These are pretty special cows, they’re pretty unusual for this area. I think they’re a heritage breed
Belted Galloways I think.

Excellent! For some reason, that weather seems like shit...but I love riding in it!
Even in that weathe it looks like a good little mini adventure!!
Two gravel tracks near me are “the crab and winkle” from Canterbury to whitstable and one from chartham to Ashford
Just got a gravel bike and looking for routes to do so il follow you on strava as to get some ideas as I’m Plymouth 👌🏻

A lovely video Juliet - Adventure activist and a whole allot more - Happy peddling 🙏
This ironically makes me want to move from Marin to England to ride. Thanks for posting this!
Mooorning 😊 what size headlands are you riding please. Keep the super video coming. You and dave rock
Another inspiring ride, I’ll add to my eventual England trip.
Good call on the swimming.
Great route. After watching this I rode the trail myself at the weekend and it was so good. I had slightly better weather than you, and took my Hardtail MTB too. Thanks the the videos and keep ‘em coming.
Ever rode Bath 2 Devizes canal path?? All gravel, flat as a pancake, 20 mile. Worth checking out if your ever that way!
Nice to have that on your doorstep, or close to.
Hi Juliet. My local playground is the New Forest. Many many miles of gravel through woodlands and open heath, although interspersed with short sections of tarmac road. Would be more than happy to show you round or suggest some routes (sorry don't do Strava).

Love that bar tape!
The ponies, the Belted Galloway cattle, the presenter, the track... finest kind!
nice video .... comes across really well.
Thanks for your videos. I am triying to learn english and I using your videos because I am cycling too
I believe the "puffing Billy" engine is in the science museum in London
No way, that’s cool!
Hi Juliet; I live in Denmark. The same situation with the weather. I you want to ride, just be properly prepared. If I only want to ride in good weather here. I would never get out.
So refreshing ! Love the Greetings !
Always enjoy your vids. Thank you. Kirk in the states
Think you can go a fair distance along the Ridgeway through Bucks, Oxfordshire and Wiltshire.
Ha, I rode that exact route a few years ago - (not for a swim though) I got to the lake and my hub split - So i had to walk/run/scoot all the way back! Again never saw another soul, exept the Dartmoor wildlife! it is a shame that the trail doesn't actually go anywhere.
Great video and a very cool bike
my only regret about 3 years at exeter uni is that i only got into cycling a year after i left. dartmoor is one of the best places on earth.
Have you checked out the Perthshire Gravel trails at all? We did a few of the 'challenging' ones a few weeks ago and they were pretty lovely!
I have started cycling more seriously, I wd love to be trained by you one day, that wd be AWESOME 👍👍😀
I thought "failed swim" meant you had fallen off into a puddle!
Thank you for another great video.
Outstanding!
It does look peaceful there. I could brood and write for a long time there. Your cheeriness and the isolation there are quite a juxtaposition! What did you think about while you were there?
Those cows!! 💚 Looks ace! Definitely going to have to take a trip daaan saaaath and check out some of that terrain!
I am no cattle expert but they looked like belted Galloways, a hardy breed, well suited to the moor.
That bar tape looks like pro Aurora? sure is stunning Juliet, one day. The High Peak surely has to qualify, cant think of any pathed /asphalt sections, that comes in a 17 plus miles.
Looks like a great ride!
Very fine. I love the ponies as well. So cool to see. Only problem is riding home in the dark off the low moors... ponies don't have lights on their butts, you didn't get a lot of warning they were in the middle of the road!
"Four Seasons in One Day" ...
isn't that a Crowded House song?
The Flitch Way is 15 miles and it's gravel the whole way. Actually a 15 mile green tunnel. But how do you define gravel as the South Downs Way is 100 miles. We have some huge gravel roads here in NZ and they are actually roads complete with large logging trucks.

Been there! Went bikepacking down the Cornish Way, it was awesome
Nice one Juliet, will you do a list or top ten UK gravel roads?
that bar tape is sick
UK is so cute!!! Ponys and trains!!!
The Meon valley trail is just under 13 miles long, no tarmac, again an old railway, might be a contender
These cows look like modern hipster living room accessoires 😂😍.
Cool bike!!
I stayed in Manaton in 2019 and yes you have to get out whatever the weather as it so nice .How about a triathlon wetsuit ?
I come to the UK once or twice a year and stay with my mother in Teignmouth. I try and ride but it always seems to be raining and the roads are soooo narrow. I have full respect for UK cyclists.
Brrrrrrr cold but what a scenery👍
Marin is such an under rated brand
Julie, where does this ride start from please? Great video and route
This would seem a good place for first-time bikepacking? Mountain bike? Yes...no? perhaps? Great video...thanks for doing what you do.
Wow I have those WTB riddlers keep getting punchers :( great vid love riding gravel what little of it we have in Kent lol
have you looked into King Alfred's way?
Great vids! My newest addiction in fact.~Bri
Hey Juliet do you have anywhere I can view and download the routes you do please? Always awesome.
I may have seen her breath in the last part. Was it that cold there? One minute, I'll go for a swim, but wait... it's so cold you can see your breath. Here, it is 85 degrees in NW Arkansas where I'm happy to be for now.
Hi Juliet please can you tell me what handlebar bag you are using its so cool . Many thanks Paul
Beautiful ride
