      Take Alfred Molina Doc Ock. One of the best takes on Doc Ock ever. Alfred Molina was great. He wasn’t a very comic accurate Doc Ock. But it’s okay because he is such a good take on Doc Ock with a lot of depth

      Someone in the comment section of one of the many Insomniac Venom videos mentioned that his character felt like the opposite of Venom. I mean:
      - Has no real beef with Spider-Man (yeah, Spider-Man was a host of Venom, but when the symbiote returned to Harry they kind of just... gloss over him).
      - Apparently helps Knull now? (Edit: Spider Dunk at 2:59 mentions that his motive was to take over the world. And yeah, when did he want that?)
      - Is serious the whole time. Maybe I'm remembering wrong and Insomniac Venom cracked a joke at some point, but I remember comic Venom being one of the people that can quip as much as Spidey does. Insomniac Venom just doesn't have the same feel.
      That symbiote didn't feel like he was Venom at all. A shame really, because Insomniac's first game was stellar in its storytelling.

    I think Insomniac Venom lowkey had good intentions. He inherited his motive from Harry and Peter, “heal the world”. But since his only exposure to “healing” is when he latched onto those two to save them from dying, that’s what he tries to do to everyone worldwide. I’m probably wrong here but that’s how I interpreted it.

    • @everythinghurts5853
      @everythinghurts5853 9 месяцев назад +21

      Thats exactly why he did it. Its a perfect motive because Venom is still TECHNICALLY being a hero. So this dudes point that he just “wanted to take over the world” doesnt make sense. Harry Osborn was not Venom in 616, it was Eddie Brock who already hated Spider-Man and wanted nothing but to surpass him. Insomniac Venom doesnt care about that, it just wants to cure the world from any disease, pain, or damage that they could ever be caused. He was a hero he just did it the wrong way.
      Also he killed Kraven because Harry still sees Peter as his best friend, and Kraven actually killed Peter temporarily. So it makes sense for Harry to want to kill Kraven. Additionally, it’s also proven that the symbiote can bring people back to life in the game, so any of the soldiers he potentially killed in the Oscorp tower he could of just brought back to life.

    • @cactusjuiceenthusiast1600
      @cactusjuiceenthusiast1600 9 месяцев назад +11

      @@theamazingspooderman2697 Kinda hard to explain but I’ll try. The infected civilians likely became mindless because Venom didn’t infect them directly like he did with MJ. They were pretty much given one prime operative; “heal” (infect) as many people as possible. As for why the symbiote was chill in the beginning with Harry and became a monster later, it’s because it inherited traits from Harry and Peter. That rage Harry felt when Kraven killed his best friend moved onto it. All the stress and fear that Peter was feeling throughout the story was passed onto it. Then the feelings of rage and betrayal that both Harry AND the symbiote felt towards Peter kinda culminated into Venom at the end.

    I enjoyed Insomniac Venom but I do agree with most of your criticisms. I think it's good to stray away a little from the 616 universe. Adds variety. But I think this Venom may have gone offroad a little too much.
    Design, voice acting. Everyone basically agrees this is superb. His breakout and Kraven fighting scene was 10/10. I personally liked the idea of Harry being Venom here. That may be a hot take, but I think Harry was applied well here.
    But his motivations were a little inconsistent. He wanted to heal the world with Peter (and I get the healing the world part, with the symbiote morphing Harry’s ambitions) but he also hated Peter, both Harry and the symbiote. I do like the web of shadows approach, but such a cataclysm felt a little rushed at the end. The first game and this game had the highest stakes in a relatively short part near the end. I don’t think Venom necessarily needs to be the guy that threatens the whole city. He is fine just threatening Spider-Man. I think the final boss was little too stretched out, with a little too much back and forth. I’m not a fan of the wings, personally. I do not mind Venom not using webs, just using tendrils and it’s fine that spider sense works on him for gameplay reasons. I also adore the pure evil route Insomiac took him on. I just love the dark gritty tentacle monster that represents the worst of Peter Parker’s Spider-Man. The darker, the better. I’m not too much of a fan of the lethal protector side of him.

    • @aaronymous9
      @aaronymous9 8 месяцев назад +3

      Definitely agree on almost all of this!
      I think if they wanted to make Venom better in terms of motivation but still being able to do their own thing with him, I think they should have given Harry better reasons to hate Peter for real and believe that only he can heal the world. Maybe he thinks only he is able to do it and that Peter is only doing it for selfish reasons. And of course lower stakes would be preferred. I generally dislike the whole symbiote invasion thing, because 1. It’s already been done in a game before and 2. I just don’t think it fits Insomniac’s Venom, I don’t think it fits most Venoms overall but logically this is a stunt that the Lizard pulls, not Harry. I think it would have been vastly more interesting if they took the approach of Harry “healing the world” via being a “better” Spider-Man, going after criminals that have been reformed and maybe even going after Norman Osborn near the end of the game. I like the idea here because I do like lethal protector Venom and I think the idea of him having a very violent judge jury and executioner outlook could have worked well for this adaptation and would match the themes of redemption and follow up on Kraven pretty well. I’m not a writer so logistically this isn’t better than ANYTHING the Insomniac writing team could do. Just anything to make Harry’s motivations more consistent and to not do a symbiote invasion would have been preferred from me.
      I really don’t mind Harry being Venom since Eddie Brock wasn’t as readily established in Spider-Man 2 it would have felt rushed and even more predictable than Harry being Venom was. And since we haven’t done Green Goblin yet, it’s a good way to do the Green Goblin 2 arc but with a twist and using it as an opportunity to adapt another villain. Kinda two storylines with one stone sorta thing. I just don’t like the way it was handled.

    • @jarmoliebrand2005
      @jarmoliebrand2005 8 месяцев назад +3

      @@aaronymous9 I think citywide catastrophe can up the stakes but it feels a bit forced here. People tune in to stories because of character work, not spectacle, so grand battles and raising the stakes higher than skyscrapers isn’t a necessity. Superhero stories are no exception. I think the healing the world part of this Venom could’ve turned into a lethal protector Venom, which could’ve been done well. I can kind of say that I am a writer (though one who’s barely starting out) and I think Venom becoming a lethal protector with the redemption theme the game covers… it could’ve been powerful. The game made it obvious that the evil side of the symbiote was due to Peter imprinting on it, whilst being addicted to its power, having saved him from death. Harry, meanwhile, was just happy to be back in mint condition. I think accepting the darker parts of yourself and seeing a literal representation of that in Venom and then giving it the chance to redeem itself, or accept it. It could’ve been a potent plot point.

      And the funniest part is that it was actually INCREDIBLY accurate, the only difference is that it bonded with HARRY and thus had different motivations. It was like 616, *if 616 had a different origin in hosts.* Like, instead of FIRST bonding to Peter, then Eddie because Peter rejected it, then getting a hateboner for Peter, it bonded to Harry, was GIVEN to Peter to HEAL HIM BECAUSE HE IS HARRYS BRO, then was rejected by Peter *for the good of himself and others* (both Harry and Peter are heroic, so the symbiote inherited the will to do right by others, even if it had its wires crossed a little in what that meant [which 616 always does in every adaptation too, always tries to do right by Peter in the beginning]) and latched back onto Harry and intended to HEAL THE WORLD. The only difference is in the origin story of who it bonded to and how they treated it and what it learned from its hosts, and Insomniac did *so very well* with that.

    Obviously there's the main Venom- The goofball anti-hero with a chip on his shoulder.
    But there's also the symbiote: A symbol of Peter Parker's addiction and all the worst aspects of himself.
    The reason that Insomniac Venom is the way he is because of how he works with the idea of "Healing" and the darkness within Peter and eventually Harry. It is NOT the Venom we all know and love, but he still works on his own terms.

Seeing as he was connected to spiderman in marvels Spider-Man two and he also had the same learning abilities he definitely has webs whether you like it or not.

      I kinda just like Venom. I grew up on almost all of it, hell I still remember Spider-Man: Unlimited very fondly because I liked how they actually used the hivemind as a plot device and allowed the symbiotes to manipulate the host bodies to where Venom could just turn into goop and slide under a door lol. The only thing I didnt grow up on were comics because the ones we had were collectors and mom n dad wouldnt let us touch em -w-; though we did break into the one they had for the PS2 game ehe. But yeah grew up on that and wayyy more, blame it on the autism but I love Venom, and that goes for (almost) every Venom and every interpretation of it, and now that I have internet access these days I can actually read the comics (still catching up).
      As for the Sam Raimi trilogy, while I do like Topher Grace's Venom I dont actually think he should have been in the movie as Sam was pressured into adding him last second for marketing reasons, so it ruined the artistic vision and overall quality of the movie for me; plus if they were gonna cheap out for marketing cause more people were getting into Venom they couldve atleast put more effort into it. You ever seen that video on the possibilities of what Venom couldve been for that movie? Love the idea that it couldve been an animatronic with more of a purple tinge. But yeah overall? Toby shouldnt have had to fight aganist Venom, it shouldve been Andrew in a third movie, and given the theming of the previous movies it shouldve been more akin to the Ultimate Venom in that it was a bioweapon/cancer cure gone wrong, and it wouldve helped with the third movie because he would be getting over the death of Gwen.

    Insomniac’s Venom works for the game he was in. We knew it hasn’t going to be Eddie, they even showed that Harry had the symbiote at the end of SM PS4 so the fact that so many people thought it’d still be Eddie is stupid. If that Venom was in anything other than that game then I’d have a problem with it but it works for the story that was being told

    The whole point of an adaptation isn’t to do the exact same thing again it’s to adapt the characters and story to something new. Now not to say this always goes well but rating something off of how similar it is to the source material doesn’t make any sense if you like the original so much then just go read the comics again. .

      the problem here isn’t about whether it’s a good adaption or not(considering a lot of things are already taken from other adaptions rather than the comics) it’s that the character is completely assinated and all the things that make him likable weren’t just removed, but replaced when low-tier motivations and characterization. There’s no nuance or layers, just surface evil bad guys gonna heal the world by destroying it

      @@spidermania That's fair, agreed. I appreciate their attempt at a more slow-burn approach to the narrative, but it did work against Venoms favor when they specifically advertised him; they played it out more like a lovecraftian horror, like there was something slowly waking up that a town didnt know about and was doing their own thing until oh hey theres an apocalypse would you look at that? And while it gave a lot of character development to Harry it gave about a third as much to Venom themself. I think this approach would work better if they intend to bring Venom back in the next game or in DLC or something, especially considering they put in a Carnage Killer easter-egg involving Cletus stealing some symbiote goop. That would allow this to be more of an origin story and would make the slow burn approach work more since they can give Venom more character development in the next one.
      Not really guaranteed to happen, but I do personally think theyll bring Venom back with the way they teased it; When Peter got rid of the suit, it was still in him despite "leaving". It still was having a mental effect and it was still bonded until Mr. Negative basically exorcised it from him, giving Peter the anti-venom suit. This implies that even after having defeated Venom and saved Harry, Harry might still have Venom, and it might blossom into more of a Lethal Protector situation where Venom learns their mistakes and we get more character development for them as well as Harry, and that theyll have to help take on Carnage! Again not, yk, *guaranteed,* but I think it'd be hype and I think it has a high chance of happening :3

    I agree with the Insomniac Venom point. He’s epic and the whole game rocks, but unfortunately inaccurate as a Venom adaptation in terms of character.
    The whole cornerstone of why Venom is such a scary and interesting adversary is because he’s not out for wealth or power, neither is he inherently doing horrid things for a good cause; he just wants to torment Spider-Man. And he knows how to do so.
    Venom stands out as an enemy because while villains’ greed and ego are what make them vulnerable, Venom doesn’t care about any of that. His sole purpose was to kill Spider-Man. He knew ALL of Spidey’s secrets and can reveal them and use them against him whenever he wants.
    I feel like Insomniac could’ve done better with Harry if he wasn’t Venom, and instead, Venom was someone else; like if they had built up Eddie Brock or something.

    I kindly disagree about the interpretation of the character in Spider-Man 3.
    He is everything Peter has not been in the trilogy.
    A poser devoid of meaning.
    A loner with no real understanding of human relationships and humanity that assumes Gwen is his girl because she impulsively decides to drink coffee with him off set of a modeling gig one night.
    He has no artistic talent whatsoever but he wants to suck up to Jameson because he probably just wants to tell people he works in the Flatiron building and knows that will get him automatic rapport with New Yorkers.
    He has the same milktoast country boy personality as Eric Foreman.
    And because he spends the whole movie intentionally being a nothing character, desperately trying to fit in, he is actually objectively on paper a great foil for Tobey’s Peter. And the perfect empty shell host for this kind of symbiote interpretation that just preys on weakness in those that question their purpose in life.
    He becomes the only purpose that Eddie can obtain in life and because mr. Edward Brock Jr. sucks so bad and lacks any qualities to latch onto, he becomes Venom rather than becoming nothing.

      Most of the good adaptions rely on Venom's original run of mini series after mini series from the 90s which starts with Lethal Protector and ends with Venom Tooth and Claw TPB wise or the first two Venomnibus (you'll have to still buy Maximum Carnage on it's own though with the latter option) however, that is pretty expensive to collect.
      A good substitute that would also prepare you for modern Venom in case you decide you want to continue reading Venom comics onward to Donny's run is Mike Costa's run. (though skip to and start with Venom Vol 2 The Land Before Crime) As its basically what Eddie's time as Venom would be as a proper ongoing before Donny changes the book drastically.
      For Flash, the only other host we Venom comic fans has ever accepted, Marvel has made it way easier with the Venom by Rick Remender: The Complete Collection and Venom by Cullen Bunn: The Complete Collection. (Though sadly the only adaption to use Agent Venom is Ultimate Spider-Man)

    Honestly Web of Shadows Venom did a better job of the whole Symbiote invasion than the recent PS5 version. but while Shadows’ Venom took over Eddie Brock and infected New York mainly to destroy everything that Spidey had ever protected for his entire life, the PS5 version has him wanted to help Harry heal the world likely trying to protect the citizens from the pain and suffering like Peter, but at the cost of taking full control of Harry to succeed this goal. And given Venom in Spider-Man 2 was made out of Peter’s negative thoughts as well as Harry’s whom the latter had his emotions to allow Harry’s thoughts about Peter being a a better son to Norman viewing himself as weak and useless, and how he treated him when the Symbiotewas bonded to him earlier. Really made Venom’s motivation being more understandable, he doesn’t want to take over the world even if Knull exists or what not, Venom wants to save the world. Only to be viewed as a threat by everyone everybody in New York including Peter, Miles, and MJ.

    Its nice to see someone else that actually read the comics and thus actually gets how poor the adaptions are and frustrating it is. Onto the list I will say Ultimate Spider-Man (the cartoon) did get better in both writing and accuracy when they gave the symbiote to Flash and made him a composite character of 616!EddieVenom and Agent Venom. (Its like the lone animated adaption that gets the symbiote itself is not naturally evil and that the host has a impact on it's personality) I'm surprised to see Lego Venom so high up considering they are friends with Carnage, I personally would've rated it just above SM2!Venom. Movie!Venom not having the backstory doesn't bother me too much, considering it is a adaption of Venom's original "run" and the backstory has been done to death and then kept as villains despite the characters spending most of their comic book lives as good guys.
    MUA3!Venom I think needs even more credit for going through the tired villain dance so fast, as in the boss fight itself they make it clear they don't want to fight you and all of Venom's voice future voice lines aside from a few are all very heroic, definalty a step up from MUA1. I personally can't stand Spectacular!Venom, the symbiote is nothing but evil (I don't care what was planned, it didn't get off the ground and they also said Eddie's earlier heroic actions were just suicidal behavior) and Venom should never target Peter's loved ones or innocent people in their revenge schemes just Peter. No? The Ultimate Spider-Man game came out after the first Venom arc and was originally going to be full on canon to the Ultimate verse before Bendis decided to adapt it instead. (it was indeed worse though) Ultimate!Venom does get a redemption here once he gains full control, as though he does lose to Peter, he still kills Trask and its hinted he goes onto become some sort of Lethal Protector like his superior counterpart. I think 90scartoon!Venom and MidnightSuns!Venom should've been swapped around. Don't get me wrong the 90s cartoon is the best animated Venom we have bar none but it should get penalized for not only making the symbiote evil from the get go but also introducing the concept of it being a corrupting influence which every future poor adaption now uses.

      I actually never thought about the fact that Brock from Spectacular took it to peters loved ones which I totally agree venom shouldn’t do.

      No, the closest Venom ever got was simply scaring MJ by their appearance alone but they did not lay a single finger on her during that interaction. They simply asked where Peter was then left. (and that was due more to a out of universe deal where Todd wanted to draw the original costume again, this being the in universe reason of MJ forcing Peter to ditch the black costume entirely)

      Also, while it's not as overt as in the later seasons, usm show venom was portrayed as not inherently evil from the beginning. It was made to be _aggressive_ , which sometimes caused it to do bad things, but it wasn't out of malice

    my only problem with insomniac venom is how he is more Null than Venom, instead of the goofy and funny guy he is, they made him a complete beast thats way too op for some reason with his goal being taking over the world or as he says " healing the world " which i get that harry gives him that idea but instead of him trying to be king of the world, he should have been a normal villain for the spider-men except he is a little tougher to beat just like doc ock in the first game or the tinkerer in the miles morales solo game which would have been much better and more accurate to the character

  • @connorharnage6697
    @connorharnage6697 8 месяцев назад +3

    When did Insomniac Venom want to take over the world? He and Harry wanted to make the world better. It just so happens that meant connecting them to the Symbiote hivemind. Ignoring I still feel this is a decent adaptation. Not the worst but not the best. My biggest issues are
    1)Not enough screentime. Seriously this is the guy they advertised the game with and he's barely in it! It also leads to my second issue
    2)Venom feels like just one person. He feels like an evil Harry. Regardless of who it is, Venom is always comprised of two people, the Symbiote and it's host. Venom still has some goofy lines in SM2 but not nearly enough for what is typically an infant Symbiote who's mind is molded by its previous host. Honestly the fact that it just feels like one character gives more of a Carnage vibe than Venom. Cletus and Carnage feel like a single character because what they want is perfectly aligned (It's why I don't like the take on him in Venom 2). VENOM SHOULD NOT BE LIKE CARNAGE

    • @EffeminateCowardlyVillain
      @EffeminateCowardlyVillain 5 месяцев назад

      Honestly thats a really great point for 2, however, I'd like to bring up that the movie had more of a uh how do I put it...
      Carnage and Cletus in Venom 2 had more of a Satan x Sinner relationship, where Cletus was in a contract bound by blood with Carnage who acted as the devil that gave him power to accomplish what he wanted, and in the end it came to bite Cletus in the ass (or, rather, bite off his head, giving the devil his due in soul/life). This fits with the theming that they went with for Kasady as being religious, and while I agree with the idea that it's not very accurate to the essence of the character, I do believe it is a good, original take on Carnage. It also helped nip the bud early when it comes to making Carnage a god, because sadly comics have this issue where they keep one-upping their characters and then have to one-up another character, and this helped nerf Carnage to keep everything grounded imo lol
      So yes, not at all an accurate Carnage when it comes to the essence of Carnage, however when it comes to Kasady being a religious serial killer it's a good interpretation of another route that the two might have taken, though it does then have the issue that it implies symbiotes DONT IMPRINT OFF THEIR HOSTS in their cinematic universe. It implies that symbiotes are their own complete individual- actually it outright states it, basically, it's not even a soft implication. Even in the first movie, symbiotes who never had hosts before couldnt bond to anybody because the host didnt fit *them,* so I guess it was bound to happen with Cletus and Carnage having two distinct personalities.

    I'd like to make a small correction and also share my thoughts on the video.
    1.) The comics came out first in Ultimate Spiderman (2003) while the Game came out later with recaps (2005)
    2.) Honestly Topher Grace shouldnt get backlash. Venom was rushed last minute into the film. Topher doesnt have to be "Hulking" to be intimidating. If anything he low-key was more intimidating than Tom's Venom. He had a goal in mind and stopped mercilessly to do it.
    He just worked with what he was given and did his absolute best. And he does a tremendous job showing hate twoards Peter. In a past issue of Spiderman, he invades Black Cats home to hunt down Peter and threatened her, here in the film he finds MJ and gets her hostage. Thats some nice detail on small accuracies from comics.
    3.) While WoS and SM2's Venom want to take over the world, it creates new twists for the character. Venom's an alien. Who didnt see a world invasion storyline coming? The execution was pretty well done with all due respect at those attempts.
    4.) Venom is a symbiotic alien. Venom can have whomever it wants as a host. Just because its not Eddie doesnt mean its terrible. Although Eddie is the best Venom (others may disagree), there are still others that have donned the duds well too.
    5.) Each and every adaption of Venom thats different keeps the character unique and relevant. I can respect your opinion, but sometimes you gotta take the expectations of "it needs to be like the comics" down since comics have now made themselves known for having multimedia adaptions of their characters with the multiveres and other adventures vs just having 1 consistent adaption and remaining unchanged. Because each time you expect a "perfect" comic representation of the characters you enjoy, but dont be disappointed when its not close to the source material.
    But I respect your opinions (thumbs up for the MvC2 Venom love) and great video overall. Maybe you should consider doing characters like Dante, Virgil, Leon S. Kennedy, or Wolverine to name a few? Even Magneto and Hulk would be very interesting ones to go over.

    Also am I the only one that doesn’t like venom being a goofy villain? His appearance lends him to be a more monstrous villain, and with Eddie being a bit of a stalker at first and being the biggest risk for Spidey’s loved ones, that’s what makes him a good villain. The goofiness kills that for me though, yet it adds a perfect taste to him as an anti hero. Idk venom should get goofier the less of a villain he becomes.

      Eddie Brock is venom for vastly longer than anyone else. He’s venom for longer than every other suit wearer combined.
      Spider-Man mythos has constantly stated that Spider-Man is a mantle and anyone can wear the mask.
      Venom mythos has constantly stated Eddie Brock is the one true host.
      Also I already did an adaptation list for a Spider-Man who isn’t Peter Parker and I specified this is a miles list. Doing a “Spider-Man adaptations list” wouldn’t make any sense without signifying which one specifically, due to how many people wear the mantle at the same time. You’d have to specify.
