- We’re Jimmy and Natalie, an American couple backpacking through Europe on a $100 a day budget. This week, we’re getting a more unique and rustic experience as we will be spending 2 nights in a nuclear fallout shelter from the Cold War. The beds are hard, the breakfast is ‘Cold War’ themed, and we are just along for the ride, doing our best to learn as much as we can and make it through these 2 nights.

As a Czech I really must appreciate that you actually care about the history and culture of not only Czechia but also other countries. It is very rare to see such travellers among youtubers.
true
Be weary of averages. My statistics professor once told me that averages are very nice and having said that you should be able to stand with one foot in a bucket of ice water and one foot in a bucket of boiling water and on the average you should be very comfortable. This is a once in a life time opportunity and your $100 day spend rate is a goal. However, do not let the goal destroy the adventure.
Wise words. The "average family", the "average income". There's no such thing. If the trip ends up being $150 so what, it's exactly as you said, a once in a life time opportunity.
the reviews are slowly getting better than those from people from Brno, thank you for your support and you are doing well in other countries
Thanks! I grew up learning to hide under my desk when the air raid sirens would go off. My first job was repairing rotary phones, later changing them out for button phones. Glad you were cold and uncomfortable, so that I am not. I get Kona coffee for breakfast ... you get sardine spread. 😂 ☕🇺🇸
Lol, that sardine spread was not my first choice for breakfast 😂 Overall though, the bunker was such an interesting and memorable experience! We’re glad we got to do it, and it’s even more fun sharing it with you! Thank you so much for the super thanks! 💚🥰 See you next week!
This was definitely a cool and unique video!! It would be so cool to check out all the history!! It looks like you guys are having a blast!!
Thanks Cory! It was certainly interesting learning about it all! 😄
A “battery room” in military speak is more a room for equipment and weapons than what we think of as batteries for say solar power storage.
Ah, that makes more sense! 😊
Being a retired military guy and having slept in quite a few war bunkers and empty ammo bunkers. That bunker is the standard fare, a home away from home.
The more I watch you two, the more I fall in love with you! You are both adorable! Natalie’s zest for life is infectious. You may have a new calling-as a tour guide to unique places. I’d go in a second! Happy travels!!❤TN Nana
I'm from Frankfurt and that you stayed in a Hostel in the Bahnhofsviertel was a Adventure too. Its like the Tenderloin District in San Francisco. Sorry that you didn't go to Places like Apfelwein Wagner in Frankfurt/Sachsenhausen and eat only Pizza and Sausage. Frankfurt is famous for its Green Sauce with Schnitzel and Apfelwein in old Restaurants. Frankfurt-Sachsenhausen is such a nice old and charming District. Frankfurt could be very harsh, dirty and unpleasent in the Bahnhofsviertel.
Love seeing your adventures! Very cool historical perspective from another country.
Thank you for taking us along.
Oh no going between Prague and Brno by bus. Next time I would definitely recommend a train. Its same time, a little bit more expensive but 100% more comfortable. Also many of the long distance train have dining cars with good options to eat along the way.
The fact that I know exactly how all of the things in the bunker feel and smell makes me feel old.... 😂
That was different. Thanks tho , as very interesting.
Had to laugh at the rotary phone or dial phone as we call them. Showing my age but we had one till I was 20. 😝
love me some Donar!!! yum, that is something I missed about Germany & Czech.
A lesson on how to dial a rotary phone. Very funny for an 80 year old.
Natalie, you are a fabulous tour guide!!!
And! There's also escape room/game in the bunker, which is quite fun, so can recommend even more! :)
It's the first time I've seen a bunker hotel. But I've experienced the old phone. We're probably the same age.
When i was in my late teens we had a “party line” phone. You had to lift the receiver and be sure no one else was using the phone already, otherwise you had to wait, and they were on a rotary phone….showing my age…lol
I am so sick with the flu right now but seen your video pop up so gave me something else to focus on for a bit. Thanks
Hope you feel better soon! 💚
Hello from Brno, I am glad you enjoyed your time here
Oh hi! 😄 We absolutely loved it here! Our next video we explore more of Brno and I think it might be one of favorite places so far💚
YAY!!!!!!!!!
@8:24 The expression on Natalie's face when tasting the sardine spread looked like she was pranked . (LOL)
Thanks for sharing the experience in the 10-Z Bunker in Brno
Lots of Omega 3 and other good stuff in smushed up sardines
Maybe a good word is educational….that you’ve never used a rotary phone is just fascinating, even though it makes perfect sense
Reminds me when I was in West Germany during the time of the Wall. I stayed a month in one of the 5 jail cells inside a small military installations for interrogating people who escaped east Germany.
Enjoying your European adventure! The bunker was super interesting!
Thank you! Glad you’re enjoying it too!! 😄
That bunker was really creepy but also pretty cool, probably one of the experiences you'll always remember.
Wow! What an interesting place to stay. These will for sure be wonderful memories to look back on when you are old and in retirement years. So much love from SC...thanks for letting us tag along!!!❤🙏Jane in SC (My Dad liked sardines, so he would have enjoyed that breakfast, but I'd have been eating yogurt with Nat!😘)
Boy do I feel old….dialing was the only phone we had growing up never had a mobile till I was I. My late 30’s I’m 62 now.
Love that you are willing to be adventurous! Water…😂 Keep the videos coming!! 🙌🏼
Sure thing! Thanks for watching!! 😄
Natalie, you would make an excellent tour guide.
Thank you!!
Interesting tour keep it up. We’re both 72 and will never get to places like this. So thank you.
Great video! Love that you're trying new things, even if it is the same restaurant three times in two days😂🐢
Haha why mess with a good thing? 😂
Very interesting- and excellent narrative, Natalie. BUT..Jimmy! that was cruel to not change bunks with Natalie since she is terrified of spiders. Could not believe you made her sleep in that one!😮
I sleep in van, so sleeping in a fallout bunker wouldn't freak me out.....as long as the 🚨air raid sirens🚨did go off in the middle of the night 🤣
:) WOW! What an experience and change from the last series in Canada! I HAD to LOL as I grew up with rotary phones, and worked in an old telephone exchange back in the 60, 70's :) Great to see history from another perspective indeed! ALL the BEST, safe travels, and Cheers! :)
Spent a night there two years ago. The atmosphere, the darkness and the constant hum of the air condition is just beyond description, you have to experience it. And the nuclear shelter exhibition sends shivers down your spine - all the what ifs that go through your head. Also maybe someone already wrote it, but the red chairs you passed by are from the old czech trams :)
Hi 👋, Amazing video, thank you for sharing your amazing experience, There is definitely a lot of dark side to Europe, a lot that is NOT made public, unless you start to dig, on the internet 🛜, even to this day, still not good to dig , I used to live in the UK, which you were thought we’ve been good, very questionable, I now live in part of Europe, France, and things that I’ve heard and seen over the last 13 years is very spooky, But is still an amazing place to go and visit with beautiful scenery. Amazing food, some of the people can be a bit abrupt,
Sometimes I don’t sleep very well, so I go for a walk at night time even at night. It seems strange, but I find it very very soothing , calming,
Great to see that you are keeping yourself safe, locked up in a bunker all night, it is a good job that you are doing a lot of walking, especially as some of that water you are drinking ha ha , 😂 it’s very fattening, we all look forward to your next upload of your next destination. Stay safe, don’t let the bogeyman get you, 😂😂😂 , no spiders, Phil from the moulin
"the people can be a bit abrupt"? Actually I've heard that (only twice in my life) about inner city Paris but when you get outside the city people are as friendly as anywhere. That dark side might come from two world wars (actually one long and stupid war) and old memories die hard. I'm just guessing as to what you're referring to. My parents were liberated in 45 and my mom never got over that. I once introduced her to my girlfriend whose parents escaped from Germany because they saw what was coming. First words out of her mouth "Normally I don't like Germans but you seem okay". Gee thanks mom!
Safe Travels and Enjoy!!❤️❤️❤️
thank you for the adventure ....cheers
HI JIMMY & NATALIE 👋
FUNNY HOW THINGS WERE MADE BACK WHEN LAST A LIFE TIME & THINGS MADE JUST YEARS AGO ARE FALLING APART 😮 I'M PRETTY SURE THE UNITED STATES HAS THEM TOO JUST THEY'RE STILL READY TO USE . YOU FOLKS MAKE IT LOOK LIKE A LOT OF FUN WHILE LEARNING HISTORY OF PAST YEARS . BE SAFE ! HAVE FUN ! ENJOYED 🍨 🍨 🍨 🍨 🍨 🍨 🍨 🍨 🍨 🍨 ❤GOD BLESS YOU BOTH ALWAYS ON YOUR ADVENTURES 🙏 THANK YOU 🙏
Awesome video with a great back story 👍
Glad you enjoyed it!
I love learning the history and would definitely stay here for the experience.
This was very cool. We recently visited the Titan Missel Museum which is also from this time period. Although I think it was even a more real to the people where you are.
Very cool, thank you for the tour. Be safe.
I've been in a bunker tour - I believe it was Berlin (visited a couple dozen bunkers, so that's why I'm not sure) and it wasn't a hotel, just a museeum - where they "simulated" a nuclear attack. All screens showed footage of a nuclear explosion, the bunker was closed off and a really good narrator went through the tour. This was wild and creepy.
You would make the best tour guide/historian couple. Really admire both of you. ❤
Sooo awesome epik video
love to follow along on your journey. If you come to Denmark and need a place to sleep - we are ready with bed and food 🇩🇰🥰 love Susanne and Dan
There were button land lines after the rotary phones. Looks weird now but didn’t back in time 😊
The bunker reminded me of my days in SAC (Strategic Air Command) guarding Minuteman II Missiles complexes in Missouri ('73-'75) and South Dakota ('77-'84). Although, my duties were above ground going "downstairs" to the Launch Control Capsule provided insight to the need for such drastic accommodations. Safe travels.
I hope your Van is ok, Vegas was hit with heavy rain and major flooding.
I was never that interested in History when I was in school but I’ve recently been reading a fiction series the Zion Covenant series by Bodie Theone. It was fictional characters but based on historical fact. All of the places you are visiting were in the books. Hitler just kept on coming and taking over more countries. It was depressing and I had to stop reading for awhile. I’m on the 4th out of 6 books. Those books made it very real to me.
I'm so happy that you know how to use a rotary phone. I would have felt so old. Stay safe and have fun.
Thanks for sharing this journey with me . Safe Travels Always God Bless Y'all. Mucho Love From Your Friend In Michigan Tam 💜💜
What an interesting journey. Thanks for sharing.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Nice vid! FYI, there used to be a restaurant in the bunker, called Milk Bar, that's what the section in 13:03 was for. It was owned by a famous slovak chef. :) Had a schnitzel and potato salad there once... and beer of course. :D Nice experience, with socialist adds playing in the background.
I am enjoying your time. I have claustrophobia and I know I would not make it. You would have made experience presented was educational and I enjoyed it! Thank you. Love watching you both ❤️
That hostel reminds me of the movie Hostel. And hell no to spiders.
Brno has an awesome motor racing circuit
DONT let that sardine spread put you off sardines….commonly served as a whole fish as a starter, or possibly could be a main course, in Mediterranean countries, especially Greece. Fresh sardines are small in size and delicious, usually served grilled…..believe me! …I know u don’t, but trust me on this one!😂
You two are so awesome! I live your adventurous spirit willing to try anything. So no sleeping with spiders and no to sardine spread😂 Natalie you did a really good job at being our tour guide at the bunker. I can tell yall are having so much fun. Unfortunately, my van build cane go a crashing halt because I got Covid. Feeling better today though. So tomorrow will be 5 days and im going to work on the van and go bavk yo the ole Sub Station lol. Have fun and stay safe. Cant wait till the next video ❤ Donna
Thanks so much Donna, your support means a lot to us and we both really appreciate it!! 💚 We hope you feel better, please don't push yourself too hard! 😊
Watch out for bed bugs in a place like that!
I don't think so.
This is not a bunker anymore. Just a tourist attraction.
This was definitely fun!
Hilarious watching you deal with the rotary phone. Once again, quite enjoyed your video.
Thanks! We're glad you enjoyed it! 😄
Reminds me of the Jail Hostel in Ottawa.
We stayed in Brno for a week in 2003. Many interesting things here. Be sure to see the crocodile at City Hall. Moravia region is the site of many European battles. I have a friend in Prague if you are interested for your likely return. Also, the country’s official name is now Czechia . Interesting story of how CR and Slovakia separated peacefully.
FUN...FUN...FUN...❤
guys its so funny to see Brno (my city) via your eyes - well in case you ll come back just let me know and I ll invite you for beer and wine drinking experience:)
Amazing video! You are definitely traveling outside of my comfort zone & I just love it!
Hey you guys. I love your videos ..I learn so much. It's like a colol history lesson. I love it.
Not sure I could do it!
I just came across you guys. If you come back through Germany and have a day for Hannover I can show you around!
🤘🏻😎🤘🏻
Awesome stuff guys
That Falafel restaurant must be good.. Interesting tour of the bunker
What a great video you guys. I couldn't do that unless I had to. And that place underscores the have to. Do you think any of the old equipment still works?
Thanks! And I remember learning that they tried to restore most of what they could. They had footage from 2015-16 where they started up the old air purification system (it was LOUD 😅) - and they tried to reconnect the telephone lines and apparently failed on all lines but one.
Very cool to stay in a bunker. Thank you it was great to learn something from the Czech Republic not a real hot spot for travel.
Awesome!!! Enjoy your trip. ❤
You guys are such good sports! If you really want to visit a place with a very dark history check out the House of Terror in Budapest. The streetcars shown in your video look exactly like (the colour and shape) the ones in Toronto. I just thought that was funny. I look so forward to your videos! Thanks again for taking us along.
Yes…..think the streetcars are actually from Toronto, where I used to live years ago.
They just look similar. Czech trams were made by Czech companies, most by Tatra and Škoda, or Vario.
Awesome videos sorry I’m sooo late
Did you post something on Monday? Didn't see an update since the bunker 😢
That was a fun experience. Glad you are having fun.
So very fascinating.
Was hoping, you will explore The city itself more
An interesting place....
Very! It was an excellent learning experience for us! 😊
i remember having škvarková pomazánka whenever i was at my grandma.. i hated it:D
What a great place to spend a couple of nights. Growing up during the Cold War fall out shelters were in many areas. Glad to see that this community is making use of this history. Keep have fun .
It was so good to spot you at the Castle and have a nice conversation! :)
And, Thank you for the tips!
You are rare haha. I enjoy you sooooo much. Love your yearning to learn.
Your review should be: (I am writing to inform my superiors that my tour ended without incident.) or something like that. LoL
What a giggle…3 days?? Canada’s Diefenbunker outside Ottawa, ON, would supposedly sustain life for 30 - absolutely ridiculous, but there you are.
That was one of the smaller bunkers. You have to realize the Prague Metro system was built on the soviet model. Only the Strahov Tunnel can house 15000 people.
Gustáv Husák was actually the First Secretary of the Communist Party of Czechoslovakia, which used to be even more important than the president! Great video!
I found your channel a couple weeks ago and went back and started watching when Saguaro hit the road while also keeping up with the recent vlogs since Germany. I find the videos fun and interesting , especially because you include history or facts about the places you visit. Keep having fun.
That bunker was so cool, I'm glad you stayed there. Your followers are learning as you go. 😂 thanks
I'm happy you enjoyed your stay in the bunker. There's no way I'd ever pay to stay in one of those. See you next video.
That was such a cool video this week! Thanks so much 🎉
Anyone wake up with spider bits ❤see you Thursday ❤or next week ❤
Haha thankfully not! 😂❤️
Really appreciate all the info you give us on your adventure journeys ❤so interesting !!!😊
Great video and history lesson.. I love history and so much to learn...
I remember playtime/actual lessons on how to use the phone in kindergarten. Must’ve been 45 years ago, and it was a rotary phone. One thing’s for sure, trying to call emergency services on a rotary phone is distressing. 😂
