One of my professors at uni (I studied Psychology) recommended us "The Uses of Enchantment: The Meaning and Importance of Fairy Tales". I haven't read it yet, but given that my professor was one of the smartest people I have ever met and he absolutely loves reading I totally trust him! The author, Bruno Bettelheim, is a really famous child therapist. From what I have gathered, the book is about the impact that fairy tales have in the development of children's morals and it psychoanalizes several popular tales like Snow White or Hansel and Gretel.
I would recommend Wildwood Dancing by Juliet Marillier. It is a retelling of 12 Dancing Princesses with a beautiful setting and prose. It’s just such a unique fairytale retelling with amazing characters :)
Yes! All juliet Marillier's books I've read so far have been great. The series that starts with the Shadowfell book is my favorite so far. I also love the harp of kings... I think thats the title...
Christy, you MUST read 'The Starless Sea' by Erin Morgenstern!! I'm reading it right now and it's absolutely lovely. Also 'The Night Circus' by the same author is phenomenal. I love me some fantasy and fairy tales, thank you for the recommendations!!
Thank you for the lovely fairytale book recommendation Christy ✨I grew up with Hans Christian Anderson fairytales; they have a special place In my heart! And as Neil Gaiman quoted: Fairy tales are more than real not because they tell us that dragon exists but because they tell us that dragons can be beaten! Take care, love from Canada!!💛
i always love your bookish talk and whenever the notification comes in, i feel happy. i started to read the lost flowers of alice hart thanks to your recommendation. so far so lovely, especially the description of the countryside of australia and flower words as you said in the video. can't wait to see another bookish one
Everytime you upload something I feel like I see again a very old friend 💕 I have been following you since 3 or 4 years already. Thank you so much for the recommendations! I just love fairies and ficcion. I have been depressed and super anxiuos this last few months and I feel this books can help me to relax and enjoy the beautiful small little things in life 💕🌸🌱🌌
Fairy tales are my favorite thing to read, the little mermaid is my favorite fairy tale, I always like to learn of retellings of my favorite classics books and fairy tales 😊
Your channel deserves more subscribers Christy! 🌸 Your channel is peaceful, aesthetic and very lovely to watch! You inspire me to make my channel and cultivate softness in my life! ♥️
early bird today! love your recommendations and the fairy tales around the world and grimm's fairy tales published by barnes and nobles are both stunning. :)
Came here for inspiration for my postgrad project and the two first books you recommend were the ones I used for one of my first papers on fairytales (Carter) and the one I used for my graduate final project (Novik). How funny! I noted down all the rest, they seem very interesting. Thanks!
The Changeling is absolutely stunning. It honestly reminded me of The Buried Giant as you were talking about it; it seems like they might be written in a similar literary style with similar themes, but I haven’t read The Buried Giant. I highly recommend reading the children’s story Outside Over There by Maurise Sendak before reading The Changeling or as you read it because LaValle references it a lot. The Changeling, in many ways, is about stories and fairy tales as much as it is one
Thank you for your recommendations, Christy! Your video reminded me of the quote by C.S.Lewis: Some day you will be old enough to start reading fairy tales again" I really like this quote and I can't wait to read these books you've recommended! ^^
Zoe Marriott is a great author for retelling fairy tales - she has 5 books that are stand alone (although it’s hinted that they’re set in the same universe) and inspired by classic fairy tales but are very much their own thing. I read them when I was a bit younger and they became my favourite books and still are
I love your videos even if I knew all the books! The Happy Prince & other stories is one of my favorite books from my childhood collection, i also had Rip van winkle & other tales by Washington Irving, and I've read them both countless times. Once when I was searching for Angela Carter books I also found the work of Angela Slatter (Sourdough & other stories) which I ended up liking a lot. I read The Bear & the Nightingale alongside a copy of Russian Magic Tales which was such a beautiful experience. I even read some of it aloud to my parents! For Russian tales written by an actual Russian author I would also recommend The Collected Tales of Nikolai Gogol. The Changeling is on my TBR but I'm scared to read it o.o, even though I really loved the author's novella The Ballad of Black Tom. It's horror but no one says clearly what type (without spoiling). One of my recent fav writers that I'd recommend to everyone is T.Kingfisher (Nine Goblins, Bryony & Roses (beauty/beast retelling where they end up friends), The Seventh Bride (Bluebeard retelling), and her beautiful webcomic Digger (which has a feel of fable/folktale about it))♡
I loved this video! Gave me so many ideas of magical books to read. So lovely to hear someone talking about the importance of fairy tales/stories too: they are not just for children! Love the idea of them being at once an escape from society but also a reflection of it. ALSO, not a book but this video made me think of a film I love called Song of the Sea, which is an animated Irish film about a selkie. It's quite Ghibli-esque, really wholesome and magical
I think you would love the Wildwood Chronicles by Colin Meloy! It’s a middle grade fantasy series with strong roots in fairy tales, following two children on their adventures into a magical forest outside of Portland, Oregon. One of my all time favorites!
I just watched your video and I was so surprised when you mentioned the bear and the nightingale ! I saw this book a while ago and I decided to order it and it arrived today! Perfect timing, so excited to read it 😊💕💕💕thanks a lot for your videos !
The Bear and the Nightingale (Winternight trilogy) is absolutely amazing. I'd also recommend Naomi Novik's Uprooted and Bitter Greens by Kate Forsyth, as well as Wildwood Dancing (I can see someone already mentioned this one.)
I recommend Deathless which is also by Catherynne M. Valente. It's a Russian inspired fairy tale for adults and weaves in many different Russian folkloric stories into one! I also recommend Wintersong by S. Jae-Jones, which reads like a fairy tale as a girl in the Bavarian woods enters the realm of the goblin king!
This is my first time to view your channel, and I must say I really adore you. You have very beautiful bluish gray eyes, your voice is melodically raspy, and your smile is laced with a tinge of melancholic longing, I can't help but admire the work of art that comes in its curves. Thank you for your beauty and thank you for the awesome recommendations, Christy Anne. I'm so excited to read them, especially the Changeling one. ❤️ I'll view more of your videos after I read your recommendations. Do take care of yourself always ❤️
Hi Christy, your list is awesome! I feel like we have a very similar taste in books. I adore Angela Carter, actually did my Bachelor's thesis of the Erlking (yes, also studying literature). You got me reading and writing on Spinning Silver now. Thanks a lot, I loved it. Keep on with your great content. Love from Germany :)
Also, I recommend Drown by Esther Dalseno. It's a nice, short retelling of the little mermaid, almost kind of gothic, deep and a little dark. I think you might like it.
These are all great recs. I hadn't heard about The Buried Giant before, but I'll definitely be picking that up among some of the others. I would also recommend The Hobbit, Stardust and The Last Unicorn, all juvenile fantasy with lots of fairytale elements. I think Alice in Wonderland and The Adventures of Pinocchio would also qualify? If so I'd rec' them too :)
Great recommendations! Also, I’ve been trying to find this book for years now but I can’t remember the title or the name of the author. But, I do remember some parts of the book: -The cover of the book was like a blue sky with fairies flying around in the middle -There was once scene where water pond/ lake fairies made you answer riddles to pass the lake -There was a scene were you walked into a shy weeping fairy in an icy cave -There was a scene in the dark, where the pond/ lake morphed into a face of person.... That’s really all I remember, also the book was more a chapter thick book, rather than a thin book If anyone knows the name of the book or the author pls tell me, thank you 🙏🏻🤍🤍
Hello Christy, I really enjoyed your video. (my apologies if my english is not the best, I'm not a native speaker!) If you (or anyone else) are intersted in horror/fairytale books I would suggest The Book of Lost Things by John Connolly. It is one of my favourite books. The story is (quite litterally) a journey into adulthood for the main character, David. His adventure takes place in a world somehow connected to our own and pupulated by fairytale characters we know well, but with a much darker twist.
If you like books based on fairytales then I highly recommend the books by Kate Forsyth, in particular, Bitter Greens which is based on the story of Rapunzel, and The Wild Girl which is based on Dortchen Wild who married Wilhelm Grimm (this book, in particular, is quite dark though).
@Josey Annaleise oh yes thank you for recommending this author! Her books are one of my favourites and they're not talked about enough. I'm so sad her other retellings are not published in the uk but at least I got the ebooks and I'm so excited to read them!
I read Spinning Silver and The Buried Giant on your recommendation and absolutely loved them. I have also ordered The Girl Who Circumnavigated... and The Bloody Chamber and they are on the way too 😊🤍 Have you read Uprooted?
Yay! I'm so happy you liked them both!! 💛 Hopefully you enjoy the Fairyland book and The Bloody Chamber just as much! I haven't read Uprooted yet. But I really want to soon 😊
Thank you for recommending tolkien's essay on fairy tales!! I love tolkien! I am not too sure if this YA author's works are considered fairy tale-ish. Was wondering if you had read stardust by neil gaiman!
Hey Christy, thank you for the recommendation. I’m sure to read them after I finish To kill a mockingbird. Do you have a Goodreads account? If yes, I do want to follow you. ☺️
Dear Christy, I'm new in your channel, have watched almost all videos already, I'm enjoying very much. Very peaceful, inspirational. I'm a master student, trying to write my Thesis, so the video that was recommended to me by youtube was your 5am writing routine lol. I would like to kindly request that you show the measurements for your pancake (it might be very stupid and simple to make a pancake, but not for me lol). I'm from brazil btw, and live in Germany. Also I would like to know more about your videogames, how to get them, like, buy online...? how is it? Well, that's it.. love your reading vlogs, your fashion taste, your voice is very peaceful as well. Keep going, all the best, Debora
These are great! I also wrote and published a modern fairytale YA series and the first book is called, The Enchantress. If you want to check it out or anybody wants a signed copy, let me know! It's available on Amazon, iBooks, and Kindle.
Hi ! I just want to ask something 😄 What would you do with your books after you read them ? Do you just keep it and re-read it when you have time ? Or do you donate it or how ? 😄 just curious tho 🤭 cause I'm always feeling guilty buying them due to that issue 😂

I read all the Winternight Trilogy, I highly recommend it!
I was about to recommend that trilogy as well! I listened to the audiobooks and they are incredible!!! Highly recommended.
Yes these books are fantastic!! Perfect for fairy tale / folklore lovers!
One of my friends recommended this to me just recently! I've got it on reserve at the library and I'm excited!

I have The Bloody Chamber! I should get to it soon! Right now I'm reading The Starless Sea and it's very much fairytale-like. 👍
The Bear and the Nightingale (Winternight trilogy) is absolutely amazing. I'd also recommend Naomi Novik's Uprooted and Bitter Greens by Kate Forsyth, as well as Wildwood Dancing (I can see someone already mentioned this one.)
