OUTDOOR MUSHROOM PROJECT UPDATE, Oysters, Winecaps, and Maitake

  • A mid-summer update on my outdoor mushroom grow projects. Our recent humid weather woke up one of our "Michigan" strain oyster totems triggering it to produce about a pound of beautiful bug-free oyster mushrooms. That tells me good things are to come from those totems this fall. I also give a brief update on our winecap and herb garden, and our buried maitake block/vegetable garden projects.

Great stuff! I’ve got a few logs inoculated using grain and sealed with wax. I’m looking forward to them fruiting

I really enjoy your content. Your herb garden looks fantastic. And your regular garden as well. I would love to do those totes but I don’t have any shade like that. Keep up the good work👍

Thanks, it's been a challenging year for plants. It's been so dry I've needed to water every 2 to 3 days. Hopefully the rain comes in time for the late summer mushroom season 🍄

Yes here as well. Clifton Park New York. Very dry very hot lately. Fortunately last night we got a ton of rain. I’m trying wine cap in the garden so hopefully they pop this fall

I've done several outdoor grows that have been very productive. I can't get away from all the insects and larva, though, and that just "bugs" me to no end 😮‍💨

I hear that, I have the same issues here with outdoor grows. The fungus fly larvae are especially brutal.

I would clone the one that fruits in hot weather

That's a cool idea. The fruit body quality was actually great for hot humid conditions. I'm impressed with them so far.

@@RenegadeMushrooms I live in hot Florida , so this helps me fruit more in the summer as well as winter, basically all year round till the substrate is done, I have three main hot weather strains going right now, lions mane, velvet foot and Florida oyster, seem to be doing alright and fruiting outside in a shaded area, high humidity helps substrate stay moist!

I didn't really care for any of the oyster varieties I've eaten until I recently learned that sauteing oysters with a little apple cider vinegar or white wine really enhances their flavor exponentially.
    How do you cook them?
Do you have any videos on cooking mushrooms? I'm always up for trying new things.

I've always kept it simple with the oysters, but I don't eat a lot of them. I'm more of a shiitake guy. I've made a couple recipe videos, but I always delete them because I think they suck 🤣 Maybe I'll post one sooner or later. I do make a mean morel and wild leek soup, but I'm the type of cook that is usually just wingin it.

The best thing to put into the Summer favorite Gin & Tonic is long strips of cucumber. Forget lemon or lime. Cucumber and a few dashes of orange bitters and you'll have the best G&T of your life.

I'd let you make me one of those 😉 I'm a vodka guy, but I do like a good gin and tonic. What is your gin of choice? The best I've had personally is "The Botanist" from Scotland. It's excellent.

I like my Gin rough. Gordens is my choice since the 80s.
