    Love these monotub videos! Thank you! It's so hard to find folks willing to break the norm with gourmets and not just continue the plastic bag paradigm! I think that the gourmet community overall is a bit stuck in a place where there's a thought of "if it's not broken then don't fix it" but I think so much can be gained by exploring different fruiting techniques, trying novel substrates, and seeing how far we can push pasteurization versus sterilization (all these things not only can help decrease waste but also can possibly help make the hobby more open to more people). Thanks again!

    I always get great flushes from my shiitake the first flush but never for the second. No matter what I get green mold before they pin the second time. I always use the dryout for a few weeks then rehydrate the blocks.

    • @RenegadeMushrooms
      @RenegadeMushrooms  7 месяцев назад +2

      That happens to me too, but not on this block. It seems that trichoderma and shiitake just cohabitate nicely together. Two strategies I've heard that work to help combat that are adding a cap full of bleach to your soak water and rinsing your blocks a few times a day with fresh water during the fruiting cycle. The frequent rinsing seems to work well but isn't possible for everyone.

    • @dccrens
      @dccrens 7 месяцев назад

      @@RenegadeMushrooms Yes. I've tried adding bleach. I've also tried adding hydrogen peroxide. Both work somewhat. But neither are perfect.

  • @hollymcc

    Wow! Those are beautiful shiitakes! I just bought fresh shiitake culture and a 50-pack of bags (yuck) - ready for fall shrooming. Would you say you prefer monotub over bags? Super impressive yield. Interesting it wasn't popcorned everywhere-Is that the next challenge---I wonder if you can get flushes sooner than the norm?

    • @RenegadeMushrooms
      @RenegadeMushrooms  3 месяца назад +1

      I did really like the tub grow, and honestly I came into it very skeptical. I think what I learned is that light is an important trigger for popcorning/pinning with Shiitake so I think on my next attempt I'll incubate in complete darkness and see if i can get a great first flush right off the top. I would say it's a great alternative for those looking to avoid plastic waste.

    • @RenegadeMushrooms
      @RenegadeMushrooms  Месяц назад +1

      I explain it all in the video, but I don't use sterilization. Instead I use a simple hot water pasteurization in a bucket. It's easier and uses much less energy than sterilization. It works great for a wide range of gourmet and medicinal wood loving species.

    How do I grow small shitakes tho? I had one block where the 2nd flush was tons of TINY shitake. OH they were PERFECT in my bison and bean chili!

    • @johnstamos4629
      @johnstamos4629 7 месяцев назад +1

      just food for thought- I got my genetics from Mycelium Emporium , Moonlight Shitake. I dont smack my shitakes, and I hose them down 3 times a day to keep them a reddish brown. I also no longer let them rest between flushes. I use scissors for a clean harvest and keep hosing them down daily for the 2nd and 3rd flush. I love ya, small pet peeve of mine- its pronounced shi-ta-"KAY" not, shi-ta-"KEY".

    • @RenegadeMushrooms
      @RenegadeMushrooms  7 месяцев назад +1

      Damn that sounds good. I think the individual fruit size is somewhat strain dependent. Try S75 if you haven't yet. That seemed to produce less but bigger fruits for me.

      Light seems to be the key, I never knew that until I this experiment. The other interesting thing is that even the surface that wasn't really popcorned produced nice fruits on the second flush.

    Is this with your standard sub with no bran or is it just your normal light supplement wheat bran pasturization method?

    • @RenegadeMushrooms
      @RenegadeMushrooms  7 месяцев назад +1

      No bran on this one. Shiitake doesn't need much supplementation, especially if you spawn heavy like I usually do. This 20 lb. block had 5 lbs. of grain spawn.

      @@danielboomers That's definitely on the warm side for most Shiitake strains. You can try talking to the people at Field & Forest Products in Wisconsin though. They have some warm weather Shiitake strains that may fruit at those temps. You're probably better off growing some tropical oyster strains at those temps, pinks and goldens love it warm.
