@@jmaydelotte Right! They shouldn't be called dork disks as that sounds bad. They shouldn't be called Spoke Protectors as that sounds like an insurance agency. "Super Aero Discs" would be great marketing. It doesn't matter that they aren't aerodynamic enhancements as I think a lot of the stuff they sell as "aero" make only trivial aerodynamic enhancements.

    Recently discovered your great channel.
I used to run a bike shop here in England and I share your love of old school reliability.
Watched the episode of you fitting mudguards to your own bike. Nicely done!
There is however a hidden danger that the knobbly front tyre can catch on the stay and catapult you into a face plant. It happened to me but luckily it was at low speed on grass.
I always warn people of this inherent danger and only ride slicks myself.

Absolutely agreed: This era 720 is "THE BIKE"! Mine is from '97 and I set it up with a swept back riser handlebar and rapid shifters. The 3x7 drive train is super reliable. It looks classy with a Brooks B17. But I wish I had a spring loaded saddle instead. The rims are double wall and great for loaded touring. I added a rack and panniers and took it to Germany to ride for 620 miles or so. And because it is old and cheap I didn't worry about a scratch here and there.
I didn't realize that the casettes are bolted together. Again I learned something from your video. Thanks!

I don’t feel safe in cars because they feel so cheap…

My fav Trek is 2300 with carbon tubes from 90es, which I bought recently and it was a bargain in perfect condition, somebody kept it in a cellar for 20 something years and never touched it. Much better design then those expensive modern futuristic looking bikes, I love the classic look with lightweight materials. It's weird I found it in Europe, you don't see many Trek bikes in these parts so that was an added bonus. American production and vintage, but kinda modern too, at least for me because I was riding a 70es pretty heavy steel road bike before that.

I was taught to add some talcum (baby) powder to the inside of the tire to allow the tube and tire to move somewhat independently of one another and therefore prolong the life of the tube. Nice job on the free hub.

  • @pascalbruyere7108
    @pascalbruyere7108 2 дня назад +8

After you degrease the free wheel, it is left un-greased. Then how do you grease it again?
The crispy clicking sound is an indication that there is not enough grease. The bearings are probably now floating in a mixture of old grease and degreaser. This will quickly dry out and the bearing may end up more or less dry.
I know it is a lot of work and probably not economical to refresh a free hub, so I wonder about some short cut that would still leave it clean enough and greased enough?
How about opening it up ever so slightly but not letting the bearings free, and inject something in there?
To be clear, I have faced the same situation with someone’s bike. I did the same as you: flooded with degreaser, but then I let it soak in the baddest thickest motor oil possible, filling from the outside until it started oozing on the inside: it did the trip, perfect function and ok sound (not as good as grease), but I know this oil will seep out, evaporate, dry out within 6 months… not great. Also oil is not the best for bearings. I feel a bit guilty to do that but at least you get a bike up and running fast. It’s short term, though.
Have you tried some of these “oils” that can be sprayed in tight quarters and then supposedly eventually turn into something comparable to grease? I’m curious about these. Maybe that’s the solution?

the latest thinking on tires and tire pressure based on testing rolling resistance and aero in a lab is wider and lower pressure is faster plus more comfortable. wider has worst aero but makes up for it with less rolling resistance. the average rider with their average speed and upright position, aero of their tires isn't a factor, so wider and lower is just faster and more comfortable.

Your videos inspired me to resurrect my 09 K2 Sidewinder; my first real full suspension frame. I've had the frame since 09 and we have a lot of history. I got a job as a bike mechanic because of it, I broke the frame and got the manufacturer to send me a new 2.0 version, rode it on tough trails where I broke every part on it, and now it's been sitting in my garage for 8 years. I stripped all the parts off of it to build a dirt jump bike that I ended up selling 6 years ago. So I have a dirty, bare frame with a Manitou air rear shock that needs a 3rd life and I'm excited to start building the thing.
I've said it many times, I want a cool dork disc. A Bike Farmer branded dork disc. Why do they have to be clear? Why can't they have color and designs on them?! Let's make it happen! It's kinda like the cycling community being mad that the cycling community calls them clipless pedals and then points out that they actually clip. We can change our ways. Cool Discs, Clip-in pedals. Fight me

First 8 speed 720 I ever saw. First with a suspension sestpost, adjustable stem or swept back bars too.

I’m kind of liking the bike . Make a nice addition to the family . What size is the frame ?

I liked the rant stand rant. Yes, we need to continue to focus on manufacturing and similar jobs in the US. We cannot be a consumer only society. Americans have always been excellent at making good quality products. In regards to the "dork disc," they are cheap insurance for your rear wheel! People who've been around a while know the derailleur can get out of whack and overshift, despite our best efforts of being careful and setting limit screws. A chewed up wheel is expensive to replace. I know.

I don’t understand why a spoke protector is viewed with such disdain but a chain catcher on the seat tube isn’t. People are weird.

Totally. It's a customer's bike and the reason they use the bike farmer's services is probably because they don't know how to set the high screw so the chain doesn't come crashing off into the bike spokes. It's a customers bike and unless they want it off it would be very wrong to remove it. People are strange.

People expect you to make the bike better!
Remove the disc and stop over inflating the tires

I have a vintage 2004 TREK 7500FX that was hand built in Waterloo. It's been an excellent bike from the get-go. Although, I recently built a New Albion steel frame (Soma Fab.) that I like even better. The steel is noticeably livelier and has classic good looks. BTW, the TREK weighs in at 33 pounds and the New Albion is just 28 pounds, which surprised me (in a good way).

I sold my domane due to issues with the press fit bb90. Carbon frames unfortunately have a lifespan also. I found a trek similar to the one you are building in the trash, fixed it up and now ride that.

Hey Bike Farmer, one of the things a guy I am subbed to does is takes the most ridiculously stupid comment and pins it as the first comment for the rest of us to enjoy, I love his sarcasm as well as yours…..something to think about, 😂.

My 1997 Trek Multitrack steel hybrid bike has an American flag decal under clear coat on the seat tube.

I ride either my road bike or my hybrid depending on the road condition. My floor pump has a psi gauge so I inflate my tires to the max rated psi. However I really don’t know the pressure it is at since it looses some air disconnecting the air hose. My rides feel “better” with firm tires.

Ope! Who knew a good bike rant would be so much more interesting than politics? I wonder what years the US made the best banana seats. Remember those? A friend had a bike with a banana seat and a great big stick shift to change gears with and handlebars that went ALL the way up.

Dude, I wonder if I can send you a bunch of pics of my broken stuff on my Trek 7.5fx and get some recommendations on upgrades and maybe buy the parts off your shop. Been limping this bike for a couple years, saved it from a dumpster originally. Need to upgrade the rim v brakes and the drivetrain. Rear cassette is busted on the high gear, front shifter is busted stuck in high. Still putting in miles just want to breathe some life into the bike but lost in the sea of knowledge that is the internet. Need a pros input.

What spoke protectors do you use for most 36 hole rims? It seems like the ones I’ve seen online don’t have a large enough diameter for cassettes with larger cogs.
