Research Chimp Makes it to Sanctuary: Rosemary's Story

- This beautiful chimp spent the first 25 years of her life in medical research. During those long years, Rosemary lost some of her fingers. She also gave birth many times but only one of her babies survived: her daughter Chloe.
Chloe made it to sanctuary at Project Chimps one year ahead of her mother. The two were likely separated early in life, so it's unlikely they would remember their family tie but our caregivers say that they are remarkably similar!
We hope that they will one day be able to meet in person and possibly reunite. Perhaps as family, maybe as friends.

Editor's Note: Though it may seem as though Rosemary is in a small cage inside her villa, she's actually in the corner of a large, multi-story chimpanzee house with her group mates all around her. Soon, she will have the opportunity to go outdoors into the forest if she chooses to. And that's the beauty of life in sanctuary. She will finally have the choice.

Agree..why can't Rosemary have her daughter with her. It was my understanding that they live in families in nature! This is so sad. Bittersweet that she's finally out of her prison of "research" but still she deserves more!

Rosemary needs to have her daughter Chloe with her ASAP. She has endured enough in her lifetime because of us humans. Thank God for what you are doing for these incredible chimpanzees.

JUST AS REAL No it’s not a lab, it’s a sanctuary for goodness sake!! Why on earth do you think that ?? Have you seen everything that they are given compared to the situations they came from ?? They’re with other chimps, given medical care if needed, food & interactions with people who love them more than anything. You really should think& read more about Project Chimps before you say something like that & start jumping to conclusions.It’s because of places like these that these beautiful beings have a chance to feel safe & live again.
They have to do soft introductions first to make sure the groups can coexist together, if they just mi them together at once it'll likely end very badly. Also, who knows if she was kept with her daughter at the lab or if they were seperated immediately, as they often are sadly. If that was the case she wouldn't have any memory of her daughter, it would be another stranger to her.

Look at the sadness in her eye's. Thank God she was rescued and have a good life, nut she cant forget what happened with those evil people. Thank you all you great people for all the great work you do. The chimps all love you and we all lobe you too, all over the world!

I really don't know how people can work in those research labs, it'd take a hard heart. I hope Rosemary can now adjust quickly to lead a full and happy life.
Please make an effort to not assume that you know who others are and why they behave as they do! There is no way you could know either simply from one piece of information about that person/those people.
It just proves that the human animal is the most evil of all animals. those that work in labs are heartless trash

I hope we can see a special, extended video, of the reunion between Rosemary & Chloe. It would also be nice to have one of the staff do a talk over as well as the sub-titles. Explaining how they prepared for them for the meeting. How they reacted. And, as I'm sure we are all praying, how they eventually settle into a relationship within a group. In the meantime, thank you so very much for your excellent work.
In years to come people will look back at the cruelty inflicted on animals, with disgust. Testing on animals is unnecessary but the alternatives cost a bit more so these animals are used and abused. It’s despicable.
@XWriter100 It's really something when people transition from expressing their compassion for animals to revealing their hatred for other people. Way to miss the point.
The alternative is actually cheaper- mathematical algorithms. We are one of the few countries left in the world that test on animals- because the research facilities get so much more money- and we get less accurate results.

Watching Rosemary play gently with her stuffed animal, and knowing she bore many infants, I think she might enjoy a kitten as a pet, like Koko the gorilla did.
Even nicer, Nancy, if they can provide a safe haven for young orphaned and rejected babies and Nancy can act as surrogate to the real thing. In other Chimp sanctuaries they actually do have adult chimps acting as 'surrogate mum.' Check out Monkey World in Dorset, England.

Such a wonderful life for these guys! Curious, is there a way to reduce mecanical noises and intercoms? Make a quiet zone near their habitat. Less like jurassic park (ex., gate opening) and more quiet. I know safety is priority for all. Just wondering?

That's one of my favorite Scriptures..or scripture like I should say..but the Scriptures do talk about GOD'S creatures and they have "souls" ; not in the same way we do with accountability but emotions..plus their will be animals in Heaven..I believe it with all my heart. I love animals and it pains me to see them abused n so on!😳

So, all of this really great, truly it is. But they are still kinda in a giant experiment being studied, although in a kinder way.

I have the utmost respect for anyone involved in all aspects of animal rights . i watch several channels on that subject and every time this happens i get the same feeling... Putting a stuffed toy resembling an animal.. Most often a type of baby primate... Probably seems like a dead corpse of a baby animal.i wish i didnt feel this way but i really do . please tell me im not the only person to feel this way... Or am i wrong?

They came to sanctuary already integrated into different social groups and they may not know one another. We hope that they'll have the opportunity to meet if their groups are combined in the future. Thanks for asking!

Why the delay in reuniting her with her daughter? Unless there is a reasonable explanation that is cruelty in and of itself and that fact that is is her only surviving child at that: reunite that mother and daughter.
I will always wonder what gave humans the idea that they EVER had the right to do these barbaric things to ANY animal and to believe that they could play GOD...!!! I like to believe that God will only EVER bless the likes of Chloe and any other animal that has suffered and paid the hefty price of coming into contact with the human race.
I love what this organization does for chimps, but I hate the demonization of research. What did we learn from Rosemary from her work in the lab? She was there for 25 years. Chimps are EXPENSIVE to house for research. They don't keep an animal as amazing as her for nothing. How about celebrating the work she's done for humanity ALONGSIDE her freedom in retirement? Everybody thinks animal testing is horrible until they realize what they'd have to do to people to learn the same thing. And the people saying we should test on prisoners--sure thing you Nazi's. I'm sure we've never wrongfully imprisoned people in order to do whatever we want to them.
