- This is my full collection of Oxford and Penguin classics so far! From Virgil to Saint Augustine to Thomas Hardy to Fyodor Dostoevsky to Mary Shelley to James Joyce, there's a book recommendation for everyone. I point out five classics that are especially great reads (cozy, spooky, and provocative) for the fall season.

Im a pre med student who started reading classics a year ago and this video gave me a reading boost. Love the aesthetic and overall presentation of your video. Definitely going to add most of these in my tbr
So great to hear!!
You know what I love about the newer editions of these books? The page feel - they're thin enough to feel light and turn easily, but still heavy enough to not fall apart on you. And, the font change on the new Penguin Classics covers, so the text is all white, is a great choice. They just look and feel good in your hands!
Totally agree with this! Well said 👏
I'm so thrilled you're a new New Yorker subscriber. I rec'd it as a gift from a friend in the 90s and I've subscribed ever since. I'm new to your channel and happily subscribed. I've 100 pages left in my reading (1st time) of CRIME AND PUNISHMENT. I've stayed in a tiny house before. Very excited for your adventures and reading!
Sounds like we have much in common! Enjoy the last pages of "Crime and Punishment" - it's phenomenal!
even the most of them are well recognised classics you have done a pretty good job because you list is very similar to what would mind look like❤
You have the newer editions. I like the older ones for some reason. You have some excellent books.
I just started The Brothers Karamazov, so excited!! :)
Hope you love it!
I watch your videos from brazil, it is very good.
Desert Island choice of my 5 books -
1. The Bible
2. Great Expectations by Charles Dickens.
3. Price and Prejudice by Jane Austen.
4. The Meditations by Marcus Aurelius.
5. The Plague by Camus.
These are books that I never get tired re-reading....obbiously,as a Christian, the Bible is a MUST.
I love it 🙌
I would love to see your home. Looks beautiful
Thank you! It's my parents' home :)
Well done, you ticked all the boxes.
Honestly the only Oxford classics edition I have is Fathers and Sons by Turgenev, but generally they have some really excellent covers. Funny enough I have 5 copies of The Brothers Karamazov (my favorite) but I don't have the Oxford edition - who is the translator for that version?
Amazing that you have five copies! My Oxford edition is translated by Ignat Avsey.
So I’m debating whether to go for Oxford World classics or Penguin classics for books such as “Candide by Voltaire”, “The Republic by Plato”, etc etc. What do you think? As in pros/cons
In my experience both Oxford and Penguin have great introductions and notes if you're looking to do an academic study. Other than that, they both use great translations, so the content should be similar, leaving it up to your aesthetic preference!
@@cleopatrickk awesome to hear, I guess I’ll get one of each and see what I like more 👍
Classics for a reason. I wonder how many modern books will still be read in a few hundred years. Best wishes with your reading. New subscriber.
What a great query - would love to see a classics booklist 200 years from now! 📚
As much of a fan of the classics as I am, there are some great works from modern authors out there. A few I have enjoyed:
• The Road, by Cormac McCarthy
• Empire Falls, by Richard Russo
• Nightfall, by Isaac Asimov
• A Long Way Down, by Nick Hornby
• A Walk in the Woods, by Bill Bryson
• Unto the Sons, by Gay Talese
@@_emh I imagine Blood Meridian would be the one considered his masterpiece
Hello what about Ken Kesey's One flew over the cuckoo's nest and Salinger's catcher in the rye and Kazuo Ishiguro-s novel
I don't own those ones, but maybe one day I will!
How is the consolation of philosophy? I've bought it because we ad to touch upon it for religious studies, but i avent started it yet. Is it scarily advanced?
It is not too difficult of a read - I think most readers at the university level can follow it easily. I thoroughly enjoyed it, as it has lots of practical and personal application, and I hope to do a video on it in the next few weeks! Enjoy the read!
@@cleopatrickk thanks so much for the response! Can’t wait for the video!
Have you read The Body Snatchers by Robert Louis Stevenson and Quo Vadis by Henryk Sienkiewicz?
I have not, but I'll add those to my TBR list!!
I love RLS works
@@littlefairyland763 Have you read "Thrawn Janet"?
Where do you recommend to buy such books? Amazon?
Amazon has a great selection of Oxford and Penguin classics, but when possible I like to support local bookstores!
Never Amazon, my friend. Literally and without hyperbole, the company is destroying the book/literary world. They're also notoriously draconian on their workers.
There are so many lists on the webs of great alternatives to Amazon, whether shopping for books or anything else. Let me know if you need some links. Cheers, and good luck! 🖖🏽🥂
1:50 uhhh you began with a penguin classic 😂
Haha yeah I realized that too late 😅
❤the Quran
❤ little woman
❤pride & prejudice
❤ the secret garden
Great bookshelf! My five “alone in a cabin for the winter” books:
• Meditations, by Marcus Aurelius (Robin Waterfield translation)
• Letters to a Young Poet, by Rainer Maria Rilke
• A Tale of Two Cities, by Charles Dickens
• Doctor Zhivago, by Boris Pasternak
• The Collected Poems of Robert Frost
Bonus light-reading pick:
• The Russia House, by John le Carré
These are some great recs! I'd especially love to read Rilke some time!
As a Muslim person I have to say it is admirable to see people of other faiths reading about the Quran and being open minded❤
We would love to see the muslims be that much open minded & tolerant towards other religions too, but alas that doesnt happen. You won't find muslims reading the sacred religious books of other religion.
@@eltigreindiowe read our book The Quran and our book explains to us about the Bible and the Torah ,because we also believe in all the Holy books, and also we believe in geez ,so we are open minded and we have a lot of acknowledgment about the other religions , if you read the Quran of course you will know that how our religion explains everything about the holy books, all the love and respect for you.
@@Rreemmkh44 good joke😂😂
Wow I'm really fascinated you're reading The Quran, as a muslim reader I appreciate it! May I know one or two of your thoughts on the content?
I really appreciate the poetic quality of the Quran! As a Christian, I mostly read the Quran to better understand what my Muslim neighbours believe and to dispel any misconceptions I might have about Islam
I am a indonesian moslem, thank a lot for your understanding
@cleopatrickk,
You do realize that Muslims never read the Bible and should you mention our Saviour you might get spat at along with a specific curse against Christians.
Yes,I know that some people are liberal minded and try to understand what the Quaran is all about. Some friends at Uni found out at their cost and got pestered....conversion anticipation however, done fell for that not politicizing the different sects !
Happy reading !
@@apollonia6656 can't really understand your tone, but i thing i can say for sure that islam believes in the bible (old testament) and i read my friend's bible. i never wished my comment to be found disrespect to anyone. much love.
@mahaaudy,
A number of Muslim students at Uni said they read a few bits of the OT but their interpretation was completely off the mark.
I made it very clear: I am a Christian and haven't heard a single Muslim say anything about the New Testament except " We acknowledge Jesus as prophet" !
Well, let us part with our differences without hard feelings, you have your prophet and I,as a Christian, have my Saviour Jesus Christ.
All the Best.
Does she read any of these books and magazines?
You betcha!
I can't believe you have "the Qura'n" 😮. I'm a Muslim. I hope u take your time reading it and ask any questions to some religious man to help u understand more. If u liked it, you might send copies to your beloved people. 😊❤
Just another piece of fictional writing like the Bible. It definitely should be read with other classical literature.
@@whitb62 actually it's non-fiction.
@@whitb62 The Bible is not fiction. If you'd read either one, you'd know that.
She's read ALL of them?!! What a remarkably well-read young woman! And congrats on your recent nuptials. But you'd think someone as knowledgeable as herself would know the correct pronunciation of some of these titles.
I've read tons and tons like her and don't always bother to look up pronunciations to the title if it's a good book
Please let me know which ones I mispronounced so I can improve!
