My god, this guy just made what NO ONE ever made:
Post a extremely complete awesome tutorial on RUclips about Cel/Anime Shader for FREE.
Have been searching for the perfect free shader on Blender for more than a year, and I finally found it.
That's awesome to read. Thank you! We're here to help if you got any questions. Maybe you've taken a look around my channel?
Maybe, this last upload will be helpful to you: ruclips.net/video/sRMiNI6IxxI/видео.html
@@activemotionpictures Wow that's fantastic.
I subscribed right after I finished the GI Shader video XD
Great tutorial. It's amazing that Genshin released their models for free and testing them out in blender will be a great learning experience.
YOU REALLY DID IT! THANK YOU! FROM THE BOTTOM OF MY HEART THANK YOUUUU!!!
Check the end of the video for all your comments and questions. Blender is beyond 3D :)
There is no way. HOLY CRAP! I've been searching for a cel/anime style shader for about a year now, and can never find one! Thank you so much for the great videos!
Glad I can be of service, Ian. Comments like this really help the community. If there's anything you'd like to ask, please write your question as detailed as you can, and I'll be happy to help.
Thank goodness!!! Genshin Impact style is what got me into 3d a month ago. Have been actively messing with Blender since then. I'm SO happy this video exists!!! Cant watch the full thing right now but will be bookmarking this and watching it intently later
Take a bag of chips, because it's long like a movie, and as good ;) - Watch it until the end and don't forget to ask your questions in the comment section below. Thanks!
I love your little story bit, where you said this game got you into 3d. For me it was the other way around, I got into Genshin Impact because (a year ago, when I started to learn art) I said that I want to make my game like a 3d Anime type mixed with Breath Of The Wild. So I was a bit sad, this exact thing is happening and unavoidably my game will get a bit of an "art thief" denotation... But at the same time it helps so much that I can learn from this after all! :)
I hope you are improving at a pace that you like and would be interested to see your progress as well Squirrel!
Thank you for giving this free tutorial, keep up the good work man!
I will be happy if you use the techniques shown here in your work 🙂
great tutorial! learning so much. Thank you!
I'm gonna make a statue in your honor. Promise.
Better yet, make a video using this knowledge and tag me ;)
@@activemotionpictures sir i love your channel gonna subsssss itttt
I've learned a lot from this video! Thank you!
It hurts my newbie head, but thanks for publishing such detailed content. Helps a lot.
Keep watching the playlists here in the channel. You'll practice and get better with time.
Amazing video, I'm working on a fanart from an anime I love and wanted to replicate the Genshin Impact shaders on it (honestly I've never played GI, looks interesting but I've seen mostly people posting videos about it, so since it's been all around I did liked the shanding it uses).
So far I got decent enough results, although I may need to play a little bit with the configurations made to be entirely satisfied, only thing that I had a bit of trouble with was that some of the shortcuts didn't work for me, but went into blender documentation to look for a workaround and was able to, I'll keep playing around with the configurations until I get the shading completely right
I am glad you found the solution. You could've just ask in this thread as well ☺️
This is too advanced for me, i understand so little. I need to learn the basic first lmao. Great video anyway.
I thought you wouldn't but you did, I'm sooo happyyyyy.
😹 - I need to do the Amber doll. Wouldn't that be great?
@@activemotionpictures Yesss it would be wornderful!
This is really good thanks man : )
You like it? More amazing stuff is coming. Share and sub! :)
Tip for Outlines in case anyone needs: Just use a Solidify Modifier with flipped normals, maximum offset and low thickness with a Material that's a mix between a colored emission node and a transparent bsdf shader node that has backfacing from the geometry as its factor

@@activemotionpictures so excited!
When they first published their 3D models, I expected someone to make this.
But it's faster than I expected.
What do you mean? You were expecting a setup guide from the game? Pmx is very popular in Asia, so it is one of the reasons why we needed to setup such a guide in the rest of the world ;)
@@activemotionpictures well, anyway you did a great job. Thanks
thanks a lot for that.
also, it's interesting how the model is full of Japanese characters and words ("bikkuri" for when the surprised eyes come out, for example. or the mouth sounds, which were already vowels, Hiragana from a to u).
oh, and someone found Childe/Tartaglia and Zhongli models along others on a chinese site, same deal (japanese words, and still a pmx).
The latest version of the CATS addon for Blender MMD models now include automatic Japanese/Chinese translations. It's a dream come true.
@@activemotionpictures wow, that's amazing
Thanks :'D
Hey so about the models I think more characters were introduced few days ago other than the original characters do u know where can I get them too ?? Did they add new models too to the site or maybe an update to the site.
Is there a way to get the models of Enkanomiya and all other sub-areas or the overworld map?
Think you could leave a picture of the whole hair node shading in the description? Is just that the shader editor gets obstructed by both 3D viewports and it doesn't help there's some moments where it feels the video cuts a few seconds out and due to the zooming in I'm not sure if you changed some nodes at the end because the end result in my case is not working as yours.
I would love to see a motion tracking tutorial from you!
Hooray!! I got plenty to track!! Will get one video into the publishing list dates.

I think, I caught everything it has ( *have watched many times* LoL)
Hey for some reason when I import the model and hit play, the chest disappears, know any fixes?
15:00 how to do that that blush thing with shape keys? isn't that a texture based thing?
thank you for this video! I have a question, have you used fischl's model? I'm having a hard time getting the texture for her ears and skin onto her model because her skin isn't on the cloth png like with Lisa's
I haven't downloaded Fischl, but in this video I showed that you can enter edit mode, select the shader, click on SELECT: your UV coordinates will be selected, now Open a Window UV editor and it will show what space you need to look for with highlighted UVs. You can then go to your texture folder and find something that you need in that space in the texture.
@@activemotionpictures thank you! i will try that
@@dabbywhale I know it's been a million years since this comment, but I found the solution. Basically, the skin mesh was assigned to both the skin and cloth materials, for some reason, and that caused it to glitch/mess up. Here's what I did to fix it:
1) I clicked on the skin material, hit "select", then scrolled up and clicked on the "cloth" material and hit "assign". Then I went back to the skin material and deleted it by clicking it and pressing the - symbol on the top right of the material properties, under the + symbol. Now the skin and clothes mesh are both assigned to the same cloth material.
2) My cloth and skin materials were not combined, so I had to go into photoshop (you can use any image editing program) and combine the skin + cloth textures. All you have to do is open up either the cloth or skin texture file using your image editing program, then click and drag the other texture into your project, since (at least in my case) the two textures filled the holes of the other perfectly. Export as png.
3) Go back to blender, go to the cloth material, go to shading, then choose the combined texture png you just made as the source file for the "Mmd Base Tex" node. It should work now. Hope this helps anyone else that may run into this problem.
Hi, what should I do when adding an subdivision modifier messes up the model? 22:29
Subdiv mod is not "magic". You also need to work on your crease angle vertices, "preserve high res normals" and add extra edges to refine sharp angles.
I'm using version 2.91, my node in shade editor behaves different from you especially when I tweak the values. I am not sure if this is a blender problem or maybe I'm just using different model/character. But I manage to fix it, some values are needed to invert in my case. I still don't know how can I achieve better texture like yours... Anyway, thanks for making this tutorial you are very awesome ... (* ̄0 ̄)ノ
The mouth shapes are A,I,U,E,O, ka, ki, ku, ke, ko, etc. as in japanese alphabet
how t activate phsyc ?
i not see that in the video
which button ?
is there a way to achive this look on cycles ?
A lot of the expressions on Lisa's model are ones I haven't seen in the game. Maybe they are stuff that they forgot to take out or maybe they are stuff for future updates
Those are to be handled by the PMX animators. And now BLENDER FAN ANIMATORS with this video. 😄
Some of them are specific to MMD expressions (I think)
i have follow all your tutorial until 20:20
why my result is very different ?
can you help me ?
Hi, ik this is quite late, but i followed the steps in the tutorial for getting the chibi/meme faces to work (i am doing the Venti Model) but it only worked for the flat eyes and the > < eyes? The blush and blank round eyes didn't work and were all black.
Plus if i turn on physics everything fucks up lol. Some of the Bones turn green (like the hair and cape) and then they wont move with the rest of the model.
select the round eyes MATERIAL. In the shader editor, press N, go to OPTIONS, select: TRANSPARENCY. You should see your eye's transparency now. About Physics, I don't know if you scaled the model or not. Check this WORLD setting: ruclips.net/video/pDlWzx2PoQk/видео.html
Could you please make a [ Seven Deadly Sins: Origin ] shading breakdown?
I’m having trouble with the Alt S command with inverting the node when you fix the meme eyes. Any suggestions?
edit>user preferences>addons>node wrangler. Activate it. Then, if you're touching a shading node and press ALT+S it should switch. Else, please tag me the time of the video.
can you export this to a game engine?

Hi!
First of all, thank you so much for posting a tutorial as complete and understandable as this!!!
I found that Cats add-on has an automatic translate using Google. It doesn't work for everything, but it does save a lot of time :)
I have a problem, though: whenever I "Fix" the model, I lose the button "Build" for the physic :/ I can't figure out why, so I'm stuck at the "build" part.
I am also having the same issue, so in case anyone has a solution Imma leave a reply so I get a notification for it 😔
hey, did u work out?
Thank you for the tutorial the steps are very detailed and helpful! However when I'm trying to import the Catwalk vmd file my animation is kinda weird, one of the characters' leg is hanging up and the whole position is incorrect. I couldn't detect what is the issue.
If you tried it with another model that is not Lisa, the error might be from wrong bone namings from that other model you're probably using.
@@activemotionpictures which means I have to rename the bone? Or anything I can do to resolve this?
Yes, check the bones mames and compare those names to the lisa bone names.
How does other used mona?

we all started with determination. Do you?
It won’t let me import any models and they don’t have a pmx in them. I can only import a Kokomi model not from the official website but it won’t let me select and of the parts. Im so confused please help
did you download the latest "give me all your cats" addon? Google "Blender give me all your cats addon", and check it's for BLENDER 3 version.
Did you read the video description?
If the official model is offline, I have nothing to do with that.
If you got another non-official model, I have nothing to do with that.
How do you change where the character's eyes look? Like can you change of the position of the pupil in the eye?
I don't remeber if there is a bone set for the eyes or if the eye position was done through blend shapes.
@@activemotionpictures oh ok, thank you! I’ll try to figure it out
Hi. When I make my own animation instead of importing a VMD should I bake the physics before or after the animation is complete?
"animation complete"? -ANIMATE first, bake later.
@@activemotionpictures Ok thanks for the fast response
If I choose a character that has a blue-ish hair, would i have to invert the shadow threshold to get better results? Like, put the shadows in the blue channel instead of the red one and the highlights in one of the other two. Because i tried with the red one but I can't separate the shadows of the hair that well
35:34
If you got a character's dark hair (assuming your texture is already dark/blue/full red, etc) and you don't have a green channel to apply the ramp node to (so you can automatically extract the dark areas): you would need to manually draw them in photoshop. Generally if you have a dark texture, you can use the green channel instead (red and blue are very dark, contrasty, always).
@@activemotionpictures She has very soft highlights: imgur.com/a/luPUbEK
The first is her normal texture, second is the blue channel connected to the color ramp to get the shadows and third one is the red channel to get the highlights. Both gave me better contrast than the green channel. I'm super slow but following this tutorial and learning is so fun!
The ramp on the blue or the other channel is just a quick trick to extract the shadows or highlights. Ideally, they will be hand painted in pure white against a black background texture.
I am glad you are progressing with the video.
Hi! This video is awesome, thank you for sharing this with the community!! I don't know if you still look at these comments as I'm quite late to the party haha, so I understand if you don't reply. Though I have a problem I haven't been able to solve. Even though I upped and lowered the levels viewport in subdivision surfaces, my shading lines still look squiggly/spikey. (I did the tris to quads thing too.) I was wondering if you could help me solve this problem? I can send images if you don't understand what I mean.
Go to shadow settings in the render settings, try cube size 128 (lower/simpler better) and cascade size to 4096 (higher is better) and enable soft shadow. Please Select your light, go to light properties, in the SHADOW parameter of the light, change BIAS size to something like 0.2 for sharper shadows.
I hope this helps you.
@@activemotionpictures Aaaaaa this helped a lot!! Thank you for replying, as well so quickly!

I want to ask, how can Blender's animation be imported into unity? Can we do a tutorial conveniently
Check my chanel video: Demistifying the NLA. It's a 20+ min tutorial on how to do that.
What are the main differences between this shader and the guilty gear shader? Or regular toon shader? They both look very similar? I would assume so Guilty Gear pre dated Genshin?
The principle to create a toon shader relies on the light threshold factor (diffuse node into a color ramp) to limit the light. Guilty gear Strive is more advanced than previous Guilty Gear shader, so I will say Genshin is under GG Strive, this last one under Blue Protocol. I need to make a full technical review on that one.
@@activemotionpictures How would a toon shader be more advanced though? The one in guilty gear (old one) already fooled many people into thinking it's 2d. A more advanced shader would add to that?
@@murrowboy to answer your question appropiately I'd recommend you check out the blue protocol technical making of. That shader is pure bliss in terms of toon shading. At least, check out the trailers.
@@activemotionpictures what's the name of the video?
Heey there!
Really cool video! I'm really really curious about another thing though, I have the impression they use Normal Edits for their face shading, too. I am really curious how they did it, because not only it's cel shaded, the shadow casting itself looks very anime-esque, and not like semi-realistic as here in Blender. Check out Daniel Kreuter's channel on youtube, he has a few videos about normal editing afaik. Do you think you can replicate how Genshin impact handles that? This is what blows my mind the most.
Wait... I have like 9 literal videos about normal editing in my channel, specifically adressing the native Blender tools and also the AB Normal addon...
You've probably have seen my channel's video listing?
And yes, every game needs to normal edit all their models one way or another to make it more anime. It will also happen that the light angle will affect their faces as well.
@@activemotionpictures Ah! No, I haven't heard of your channel before, I was researching a bit about Anime Shaders and found this video, haha

Hello, I meet a problem when copy paste Genshin characters between blend files. First, thanks a lot for the great videos. I followed your video and migrated couple of characters in to Blender. Each works fine in textures and animations. But when I want to merge some of them together into one scene. Bones of hairs and clothes act strangely. For example, if I copy Fischl from one scene to another. Her body is copied correctly but her hair and skirts all falls to the 0,0,0 point. I tried append blender file, though positions are correct now, bone connects are lost. Any recommendations how to copy paste these mmd chars? many thanks!
Create a collection in the original blend file. Name it "Fischl", import the character and all her assets into this collection. Save.
Open a new empty file in Blender, then File>append>fischl.blend>collections>Fischl
Bam! All of your things correctly into place.
@@activemotionpictures Thank you so much for the prompt reply. It still does not work correctly. Please check out this video I recorded the errors.

Yes. Your character is already posed,go to modifiers on the property page after selecting the body. You will read it has an armature modifier, apply it. Then, with the body selected: file>export>fbx. Target your directory, give it a name and your're set.
Bounce bounce bounce. XD
I'm not exactly sure what it is I'm doing wrong. I've followed this tutorial pretty much to the letter, but I can't seem to get the shading to look the way it does here. It still seems to react to the positioning to the light, which is good, but the colors on her face are very muted and greyed out for some reason. @@activemotionpictures wait what LOL? I was asking how hard it'd be
0:12 "Artifacts" means entirely different in Blender lol.
I'd like animate these by hand, but that's a LOT of individual bones to deal with, many of which are layered on top of each other, making them a pain to select. Any tips on making this easier? Im used to dealing with rings on the outside of the model as the controls, and a toggle to switch between IK and FK.
If I gave you my advice, I'd say "use bone groups", toggle their visibility from the bone group addon (native in blender), and use color schemes. You'll animate specific groups one at a time.
I would also tell you to create a full rig with rigify exactly matching the length of the bones for this model, and then COPY CONSTRAINT their rotations to the original rig.
@@activemotionpictures Woah, thanks for the fast reply! Is the bone group addon the one labeled "Animation: Bone Selection Sets"? It's the only one that comes up when i search "bone" in the addons list.
Yes.

@@activemotionpictures I see what's up. I checked the textures of the other girls and everyone has the eye sockets white in the face image except Jean lmao. I think i can solve this painting it like the other girl's faces in the texture editor. They even have the shadow painted on it
@@activemotionpictures Hi again :)
In the multiply that's on the skin shadow, the color2 seems a bit red-ish, but it just appears like that in the video, where did that color came from? The default color appeared grey to me. I think that's why my face looks pale in the final step. Here's what i got after the final step of changing the second "multiply" to "add": imgur.com/a/1Zpk4k6
I renamend the texture and material names and exportet the model as .fmx. But after importing the model again, the texture and material names arent saved. The shape key names are saved and correct when importing again. I just want to have the material names properly in english to have it easier when reusing a model. So my Question is, how should i save my files? Is .fmx even recomended?
click on the shader list you want to modify. Press shift+F3 on another window until you arrive to the shader editor. Find the "image" node. Click the FOLDER icon in the image node. Target the texture file in your explorer (must be at the same level of the .blend file). Then go to File>Save>external data>pack all into .blend
