    I saw this performance at the Lincoln Center a few years ago. This was a tough New York audience. After Gaines sang the longer version of Johanna, the audience stood for 17 minutes of applause. I'm glad someone actually videotaped it...it was an incredible moment. I've seen Sweeney Todd about 20 times -- Gaines was the best...

    He's not as high as some people think. He's really more of a high baritone. The true tenors of the show are Toby, Pirelli, and the Beadle. Davis Gaines by my figure is more of a dramatic dark baritone. Which would make him a good Phantom. I think he still captures a good deal of Anthony's innocence though.

    you see, underneath the yellow hair, there's a head which is usually thought to think or contain thoughts and logically, in order for Anthony to be in Johanna's head, he has to be in her thoughts
    and so he is buried in her head or she is thinking of him
    it's a very sweet line

    What you have to remember is that the tour wasn't played for the cameras but for the audience, and the theater that they played in was huge (it was actually an old factory hall) and he had to be loud even to the people in the back row - the updated and far better sound eqiupment of this production (also played in an actual playhouse designed for carrying sound to the back of the house), he was able to play a more subdued Sweeney - that is my theory, anyway. :)

    Johanna…
    And in that darkness when I'm blind
    With what I can't forget
    It's always morning in my mind
    My little lamb, my pet
    Johanna…
    You stay, Johanna

    Quick, sir! Run and tell!
    Warn 'em all of the witch's spell!
    There it is, there it is, the unholy spell!
    Tell it to the Beadle and the police as well!
    Tell 'em! Tell 'em!

    And look too much like her
    If only angels could prevail
    We'd be the way we were

    well, if said in the wrong tone, it could sound assuming and a bit self-absorbed (assuming that a girl, after only meeting once, would think of you)
    and the lyrics before it can be taken to be a bit creepy ("I'll steal you...I am in the dark beside you...") and so the rest of the lot is assumed to be just as creepy
    I have to admit, at first I found it creepy bu, after analyzing it, it's simply a dark way of looking at a love at first sight

    • @eirikastokes9652
      @eirikastokes9652 5 лет назад +4

      That's giving Sweeney a bit too much credit. The only reason he doesn't kill the man who comes in with his family is because the wife and child would be witnesses and he'd have to kill them all - in which case there would absolutely be screaming and shouting and he'd almost certainly be caught.
      Sweeney by this point is totally unhinged and amoral. He will do and kill whatever and whoever he has to, to get revenge on Turpin. He's even planning to kill Anthony once he brings Johanna home from the asylum, so he can also kill her (yes, he wants to kill her too, listen to the song closely and you'll find that he's pretending each patron he kills is Johanna). This song, funnily and fittingly enough, is the last bit of genuine emotion Sweeney displays until the final sequence - when he finally, truly snaps. More than anything, I think this song is meant to show how Sweeney could never truly have a normal life again, and that his lamentations about Johanna are legitimately a farewell to her, because he knows he can never be with her again now that he's descended into this murderous madness, and would rather kill her himself than just never see her again. It's perverse and grotesque, yes, but also deeply sad.

    • @tearoses9940
      @tearoses9940 5 лет назад +1

      Michael Stokes True, but he could’ve had a bit of morality here simply because robbing the man from the wife and daughter is exactly what happened to his own family. The fact that he’s literally singing about his daughter here kind of shows that it’s still on his mind (in fact, it’s constantly on his mind), so it’s likely he didn’t want the same thing to happen to the woman and the little girl.
