Terfel has the most beautiful tone of any Todd; there's no strain in any note. But he's also one of the best acting singers ever. There's real menace throughout. Bravo!!
Quast said he nearly shat himself the first time Terfel began singing behind him during the first rehearsals because he wasn't prepared for the volume of his voice lol.
One of the great tragedies of Broadway is that Philip Quast has yet to play the Phantom - the Phantom's age is pretty obscure, so if he's still up for it, I'd be one who'd happily buy a ticket!
Just gotta say the direction here is impeccable. The long pause of Sweeney whistling before “now then my friends” is chilling. It also just makes the material feel so fresh, not overdone/cliche as some Sweeney productions have been.
I like this one but for me Johnny Depp just has a sad somber tone to his voice as with his happy mood. It shows his anger, his delight with how close to revenge he is. I still very much like this.
@@newname34695 Here is one such recording: ruclips.net/video/BVRH8445fqg/видео.html And there are several other recordings, as well as live performances, of him performing this as well.
In my opinion, Timothy Nolen should’ve played Sweeney Todd in this production. He’s the greatest Sweeney. He would’ve been 72-72 here, but he still had the vocal and physical ability
Skÿlar The Spatuła you know Timothy actually did the role of Sweeney again in 2012 at the Chicago opera at 71! Absolutely incredible. The guy is a legend
He did - after "a stylish trimming of the hair?" he's supposed to say "a soothing skin massage?" before Turpin begins singing to fill in the instrumental before the singing bit - Terfel probably either just forgot his line, couldn't fit it with the delivery he wanted, or maybe the director just didn't like the way he said it - interesting omission though
I gotta be honest, I don't think Bryn is a good fit for this kind of role. His voice really can't hit the high notes with any sense of restraint or subtlety and it just sounds strained and blunt. When he sings in the middle range softly, he sounds great, but as soon as a high note comes in, he sounds like an airhorn without any control Especially when he's being paired against non-operatic singers, his lack of flexibility becomes really obvious.
Philip Quast is just incredible
his performance as Javert in "Les Miserables" is the best.

we got Groban now to top that lol
I had no idea this cast version existed, Terfel and Quast is a dream teamup
yes! found this today and thought the same!
I only knew Quast as an excellent Javier. Sweeney Todd is my favorite musical. This is fantastic.
voice perfection, yes.
But one is not an actor.
...
which, while this annoys me, isn't new for the Operatic world. Most suck at acting.
Wow... Bryn Terfel has an amazing voice...

That’s a baritone combo that would be really hard to beat.
Serial killer vibes x 1,000! He’s got that distant, calm eye and that bone chilling patience in his speech. Believable and transporting
Almost thought Meatloaf was playing Sweeney Todd
lol. It would be great if it was Meatloaf.
Me too!!
Haha!
"Hot patootie! Bless my soul! I really love that Sweeney Todd!"
@Jason little and this is why it was NONSENSE not to cast Quast as Javert in the Les Mis movie! Well… just one reason why it was nonsense…
I'm here for Philip Quast. :D
This Sweeney has a serial killer smile. I like it !
Quast said he nearly shat himself the first time Terfel began singing behind him during the first rehearsals because he wasn't prepared for the volume of his voice lol.
What a joy to hear two such beautiful male voices in such harmony. Has Turpin ever been sung so well?
These two would make great phantoms
I was thinking the same thing Philip Quast would be a phenomenal Phantom Bryn Terfel would rock it too!
Might not be the best fit for two bass-baritones who are hovering around 60 years old, but both marvelous performers nonetheless.

@@princezzpuffypants6287 well he’s only 64. He can be the oldest actor to do the role!
Bryn would’ve been amazing too
They're not high baritones/bari-tenors. Completely wrong voice types.
Lmao I was looking for this 6 years ago but it was taken down at the moment.
So good to serendipitously find it today!
dear, Javert, you don't need a shave. not from this guy anyway.
At last, Benjamin, we see each other plain!
Morsieur. Sweeney, you'll wear another chainnnnn
"All I did was have a hot wife..."
I AM WARNING YOU, TURPIN! REVENGE HAS BROUGHT ME THIS FAR! THERE IS ANGER IN ME YET! MY RACE IS NOT YET RUN!
Idk if it was intentional but I just love how chill Sweeney is at the end of the song.
Just gotta say the direction here is impeccable. The long pause of Sweeney whistling before “now then my friends” is chilling. It also just makes the material feel so fresh, not overdone/cliche as some Sweeney productions have been.
I swear IDC if the Muppets star in a version of this, I'm gonna be right there for it.
Philip Quast is incredible. No offense to Bryn Terfel, he is awesome too...
Extraordinary voices!
alan miss you
Same
Simply brilliant.
Tercel voice is fabulous!!!!
Goosebumps are all over.
OH for a singing voice like that!
Is he really whistling or is that sound coming from someone else?
Sweeney Todd looks like he belongs in Mad Max
I like this one but for me Johnny Depp just has a sad somber tone to his voice as with his happy mood. It shows his anger, his delight with how close to revenge he is. I still very much like this.
That’s what George Hearn is for
Ed Balls is great!🎉
Did Bryn Tefel ever play Javert?
There's a recording of him singing stars on youtube

Y’all trippin, no one can beat Len Cariou’s performance
Camilla Aston Len couldn’t match Timothy in either vocal performance or acting. Timothy was out of this world. Even in his 70s he plays the role
For a barber he sure is a bit creepy.
Did Terfel miss a line in the beginning? Seemed like the other actor was waiting to come in, but it’s hard to tell.

@@salvinuenthusiast Thanks, nice catch. I’ve seen the scene a number of times but never lined them up like that.
Turpin and Todd here should have been switched each character was playing each other part.
Turpen become Javert

They couldn’t use actual shaving cream ? Come on
