Apple’s habit of making their phones only “repairable” (ie, swapped with another one.) by their own repair centres, is that they are built not to be taken apart. Crazy idea, build things to be disassembled at the end of service life, so robots like Daisy have a much easier time doing it, with less waste. Also, if Apple programs into Daisy the specs for competitor devices, they can also scavenge materials from the competitors.
I've been repairing phones for years, and in my experience I'd say that apple phones are up there for some of the most user-repairable phones. Often access to the screen is behind only a couple of screws (the most common type of break) and the battery is behind only another couple more (the second most common type of break). And they've been getting better and better with more recent models (the 4 was the last one where the screen was underneath EVERYTHING ELSE; since then the screen can be removed with just the couple of screws).

Hey, I wonder could you expand on the last part about just trading in broken phones, majority of phones apple deems beyond repair are very easily repairable by trained professionals, maybe something like a video between you and Lewis Rossman could be made addressing this further
Apple's expends considerable resources to stop anyone repairing their devices. All parts for board-level repair are unavailable. Their behaviour is unethical and disgusting.
You recently asked on Twitter what kind of content us, your audience would like to see more of. This. This kind of content is brilliant. I'm not an Apple fan, I'm in fact a bit of a hater and not a huge environmentalist either. I just love tech and it's been great to meet Daisy. The fact that it's in a big tech facility and environmentally-friendly is just a bonus.
In our school we started a program, where we put our broken phones in a box and they ship them away where they can recycle them and the school gets like around 3€ per phone (but the school gets the money lol). But its great they came up with this and its not just in our school :)
I've hung on to several phones well past their sell by date because they kept on working for the things that I used them for. The problem with keeping older phones is that A) the OS stops getting updated and B) apps stop working because of the old OS. My Apple 3S works fine and I've been using it as an ipod. My current phone is a 5S works fine but some apps are stopping working with the old OS. Yes it is great to keep an older phone as long as you can but the companies don't help when they make their older phones obsolete
i mean 5 years of software updates are already a lot, for apple that already like 20 iphone models to keep updated, so imagine if they never stopped support it would be almost impossible to get updates, also a lot of old phones might just get too slow at that point too.
@@misamsung6191 that's not what i mean, i mean that if it got 10+ years of update it would be too slow, not saying it is currently obsolete, just that it would be too slow to be updated for many years

That is what Apple is doing they are adding new features and apps that are slowing down the main processor because of poor programming and just general bloat. People want new and shiny, we really are magpies

Every phone I’ve had after I upgrade, I store my old ones away in a draw, never thrown one in the bin. Just like keeping the older phones then looking back at them later on.
4:09 Why was the hand sorting skipped? That is definitely a key part of the process. Who is sorting these components by hand? Can we see that facility?
Or here’s an idea… people could stop upgrading every… single… year. It’s pointless to throw this mass of metal away ever years just because the next is 4% faster. The issue creates itself
It's not just parents or old people who does that, I think i'm fairly young, i'm a software engineer and I change my phone only when it dies and I don't buy expensive phones neighter just middle price with good specs. A good portion of my coworkers do the same. Same with computers, good specs, good quality and capacity to expand. Edit: some of the dead phones i fix and re utilize them for another things. The majority of them cannot be fixed sadly.
Really appreciate apple for this. This is bringing a new freaking revolution in the world of breaking down old smartphones and using there components in new smartphones!
How delusional of you. As someone who repairs apple products for 12 years i can safely say apple is one of the less green companies on the planet. The fact their devices are made to not be repaired already speaks for itself
@@dilaisy_loone2846 No, they are not. What Apple has done here is amazing but that doesn't mean they are the good guys. It's way more expensive to repair an Apple product than any other electronic item. This just forces people to ditch the old device and get a new one. recently they have started a self-repair program after so much backlash from the community. Recycle is just one of the 3 'R's. Reduce and reusing part is also important.
@@dilaisy_loone2846 dude dont talk shit you clearly know nothing about. Ive been doing it for 12 years. You cant replace home buttons on iphone 7/8 , more recently you cant change a rear camera on iphone 12/13 even if you place an original camera there. Its ID locked and the only way to do it is....guess what...going to apple and pay a stupid value for the repair. Plenty of ipad model docks are soldered and take extra time and effort to repair. Like i said ive been doing this for a long time, compared to other brands excluding Sony, apple products are some of the worst products to repair
Mixed feelings on this one. While it is really cool that Apple has these recycling and carbon-neutrality goals and actually engineers solutions to meet these goals, they also go out of their way to make their stuff almost impossible to repair. They still have the best accessory compatibility and software support in the industry, but let's not forget their many grave sins. Everything glued together, a chip in every cable and component software-locking the parts together to lock out replacements and aftermarket stuff, cables that will definitely break in a year, 27 different special kinds of screws in a phone, etc. They also don't promote their trade-in programs enough, or have no such program in many countries. They have used child labor in the past (and who knows, maybe they still do behind the scenes). They removed the wall wart from iPhone packaging, while shipping the new iPhone with a cable incompatible with old chargers, so you do end up buying a wall-wart separately, which is extra unnecessary packaging and shipping. They should have not switched to type-c on the wall side in the same year as they removed the wall-wart. They have created a culture of consuming in which customers are encouraged to buy the newest shiny gadgets every year, even though the only thing new about it is a design change.

I have a Samsung S8 from... 2017? Goodness time flies... But recently i bought a new phone, but I still keep the S8, even if it's cracked, it's still usable and I use it to play songs when I'm doing other things. And then I do everything else on my new phone
Isn’t repair an option in any of these “What can we do?” points? I would assume that repairing broken screens would allow you to reduce the need to purchase a new phone.
Watch about right to repair movement... It's better to make the phones more repair accessible. These are just BS from the company to project being environmental. 😆
I feel like Apple should start having a "Vintage Store", additional to their Refurbished Store. A place where they renew/repair old devices with only the functional parts like display and battery, but keep the scuffed and used housing that might tell a story and make those devices truly unique. Almost as if you were buying an old watch or piece of jewelry.
Apple: it’s a secret lab. Don’t tell Arun: 👌 Starts off with a pinpoint on a map “I’m standing inside apples top secret facility in the Netherlands…” Apple: “okay… not doing that again.”
Dude take a break. You really deserve it and we will all be here for you when you get back. Even if its only a week or two itll be really good to reset.
Hey MrWhostheboss... First I want to thank you for your video, I am a born Dutchie and didn't know about this recycle facility by Apple. However, I do want to continue your learning curve: Amazing is actually better translated to 'Geweldig' then 'Verbazing'. The word 'Verbazing' is more suitable in situations where you are 'amazed' (as I was 'Verbaasd' that Apple is doing this in my country). It is 'Geweldig' that Apple is doing this, because it is so much better then burning the phones.
What you completely ignored was Repairing: The best is to repair a broken phone (at least when it is still reported) and Apple is very much against that (at least repairing it yourself or encouraging to buy a new product, as the repair would not be feasible. They should just sell repair parts cheaper and make them easily replacable). The best for a product is not be thrown away. Of course software updates end sadly mostly too early, but hardware performance is now at a point that an old phone will not feal mostly laggy for a n average user. Giving thumbs down, this video was good, but putting Apple in a wrong light: "See we recycle, but we will encourage you to buy a new one, instead of repairing it, which creates the e waste much earlier, than to repair it"
So freaking cool. Nice work Apple!

AWESOME!!! It would be so cool if you could do a tour of a smartphone factory as well, so we can see where, how, and under what working conditions smartphones are made! If consumers are more aware of where their products are coming from, they might be more motivated to use phones for longer before getting a new one, helping the environment!
So true!
which doesn’t help apple btw
Are you kidding? That's like suggesting a tour of a chocolate factory will make people want to start dieting. Seeing brand new shiny models coming straight off the production line is only going make people want an upgrade more!
@@TunnixTV haha I see your point... so I guess the tour should be of a Samsung factory making some obscure model from last year lol!
Hey, I wonder could you expand on the last part about just trading in broken phones, majority of phones apple deems beyond repair are very easily repairable by trained professionals, maybe something like a video between you and Lewis Rossman could be made addressing this further
*Louis Rossmann
Was going to say that there is the option to repair your phone and that would also help the environment alot
@@alexanders1859 If Apple doesn't stop monopolising over iDevice repairs, no one is going to do that because it's simply not economical for them.
@@jm56585 Ahhh, I knew I had done something incorrectly, thanks for the correction
Apple's expends considerable resources to stop anyone repairing their devices. All parts for board-level repair are unavailable. Their behaviour is unethical and disgusting.

This. This kind of content is brilliant.
I'm not an Apple fan, I'm in fact a bit of a hater and not a huge environmentalist either. I just love tech and it's been great to meet Daisy. The fact that it's in a big tech facility and environmentally-friendly is just a bonus.

No Logic Pro X for you then!
@@wolfy1398 IDK I can stream just fine with my old 5S. The other thing is that the cell phone makers make them obsolete before they actually are.
@@misamsung6191 that's not what i mean, i mean that if it got 10+ years of update it would be too slow, not saying it is currently obsolete, just that it would be too slow to be updated for many years
@@wolfy1398 What is slow in electronics? I had an old laptop that I used to use as a media server until it gave up the ghost. Sure it was slower than my more modern laptops BUT microseconds really doesn't matter. You can have a blazingly fast processor but the bloat in the applications is what slows everything down. That is what Apple is doing they are adding new features and apps that are slowing down the main processor because of poor programming and just general bloat. People want new and shiny, we really are magpies

Really appreciate apple for this. This is bringing a new freaking revolution in the world of breaking down old smartphones and using there components in new smartphones!
Apple's engineering always impresses me, it *almost* justifies the frivolous prices they slap onto their products.
you mean the phones that cannot be repaired, screens that are software locked to other components and more. yea right
How delusional of you. As someone who repairs apple products for 12 years i can safely say apple is one of the less green companies on the planet. The fact their devices are made to not be repaired already speaks for itself
@@SimonBauer7 they can be repaired just as any other smart phone

Interesting point!
Absolutely!
I was reading the comments to see who was going to say this. Thanks

I say they could have Daisy check for which parts are functional, leading to them being sold at used prices.
6:24 Didn’t know there were multiple versions of me…
Seeing apple do this is surprising. I guess they're starting to feel the pressure.
Have you actually watched this? Because it becomes clear that Apple has been developing this technology since 2013 at least.
2:03 cute cat tho
That robotic arm is excellent and the prosess is awesome.
