So here I show how I locate the issue on a Rygar PCB and repair it while talking a bit about logic probes and why they are useful.
I plan sometime soon to script and properly edit a ground up guide to repairing arcade boards since a lot of it applys to consoles too. Hope this can help someone anyway.
Wow, I've learned loads from that one, thanks very much :o)
Great video. All new info to me and very interesting. Thanks for sharing!
Hello. I want to thank you since this particular video by you inspired me to buy that same logic probe and start fixing boards a year or so ago.
I got a scope recently, and have been learning a lot of new stuff. I've been able to repair at least a dozen boards so far, even a Rygar that worked sporadically,. It turned out to be an enable line in the main bus by an LS32.
Well, just wanted to thank you for your work and inspiration.
Best regards
@guitarbridgecleaner Well usually I'll check the data/address lines on the ROMs first but I must have missed the missing signal on this one so I had to go through all the logic that was near the roms until I found that one dead input. It's messy and time consuming but it does get the job done. I will have to make a better video soon and actually plan it rather than just ad lib as I did here.
@NeonGenesisPlatinum A GOOD ROM Programmer is the GQ-4x by MCUMall. Best bang for your buck in my opinion. The roms I never pay for individually, I just pull them off dead boards ^_^ They are available on ebay but your better off buying scrap boards, lots more parts for your money.
@ioctlvoid Yeah there are exceptions to the rule but generally so long as the driver is working properly then you should in most cases get the same or very similar results. MAME is pretty strict about how it's put together so it's a good example.
@lukemorse1 Thanks man, yeah it's just trial and error and when you know, you know for another board or console etc. I think you learn more if you enjoy doing it, if you don't it's probably pretty hard going!
Yeah I've been thinking about getting another analyzer for a while but I don't really miss my old one. My probes does most of what I need in most cases, or my scope can pick out really subtle issues.
@Padoca85 They range from £10 all the way up to £100+ but this one I think was about £25 from the US and it's highly recommended! It's an Elenco LP-560 and I got it on ebay.
I'm really glad I could inspire someone to get properly into board repair! This probe is a great tool for that, glad it's served you well. Thanks for the kind words!
I'm going to do a video on this soon, it seems like something that can help others quite a bit. It's quite easy to understand with a bit of explanation.
@RetroGamerVX No problem, glad it helped someone out. I do plan to do a better video on this sometime this year so keep an eye out for that -_^
Subscribed!!! Wonderful vid mate. I am looking into getting a full size battlezone and from researching the forums i have found these to be glitchy so i'm guessing i will be learning how to work with boards. I have some basic skills but nothing akin to your own...YET! lol. Anyways could you let me know what model logic probe you used and a rough price idea. many thanks in advance for any info.
Nice video Chap! I repair logic boards used in com gear, the're a pain. I bought an EXPENSIVE Digiview 3400 Logic analyzer, $1600, that interfaces with a laptop through a USB port. I have found many problems with it that would have been hard to isolate. It took weeks to understand how to use it properly and; still learning.
I still use logic probes/pulsers to find MANY problems. The 3400 is time consuming to hook up.
good luck with your board repairs.
Cheers,

I just purchased a bootleg Rygar and plan to put it in a 20-inch cab to make it a dedicated machine with the marquee artwork etc...
I enjoyed your video and found your words to be wise. For me too it is just a hobby, a love, a passion and money gets involved and I make a few quid then that is the icing on the cake! 5☆ for your efforts.
@monstermug I have an MCUMall GQ-4X. It's not the best by a long shot but for the money it's pretty good.
@jumblejunkie It come with time man, just got to get your hands dirty and it all falls into place -_^
@psykilll Just use a flat head screwdriver either end to lift it as vertically as you can. Simple!
any chance you could do a short guide on how to read ttl datasheets and use the probe, I have a few jamma board that have various problems but I'm not sure how to check some of the chips with a probe
@RetroGameTech Thanks mate, been enjoying your videos of late also!
I'd love a video on this as well as I've got a logic probe and datasheets but the understanding between the two is a little muddled :-P
Nice repair! I loved this game in the arcade when I was younger. It's audio is one of my favorite video game related music used.
i got myself a logic probe watching this video. Thanks
What rom burner do you have? I want one too :)
Its called Logic Probe right? how much this usually goes for? Congrats on the repair ^^
can you show us how to use the eporm programer and the whole mame fix thanks
Top man, great information and great attitude sharing it with people.
How much is a rom reader/writer??
And how much was the blank rom?
@chefsolid Thanks ^_^ I try my best!
I would have loved to see that chip extraction. :(
1ST LOOOOOOOLS
Nice tips thanks for sharing.
@Bylga Thanks man!
RETROREPAIR, why does some arcade games use MASKED ROM chips instead of EPROM chips any reasons why? Whats the differences between XY vector deflection signals compared to H&V sync signals?
Here I am 11 years later, Another Rygar saved! well done :)
Nice work! ;)
I love what you said in the last minute. Great video!
Would this be useful for troubleshooting a solid state amp? I dont think it has IC just capacitors, resistors etc..
The logic probe is really more for logic levels to see what a CPU or microprocessor is up to. With amps I'd always go for the trnasistors first then work my way out.
Hola Elisandro solo quiero decir que los circuitos Digitales funcionan de forma diferente los Analógicos y por esa razón se utilizan equipos diferentes como el logic prove ,logic analyzer ,logic comparator, signature analyzer, etc,Saludos . Elisandro De Leon

Muchas Gracias por la informacion!
Good work on this! This game was the last game my all time favorite composer, Tsukasa Masuko worked on before he left Tecmo to work over at Atlus in 1987.
@RetroRepair Sweet!
any more thoughts on making your ground up guide on repairing boards?
I'm struggling to get to grips with the basics, have a fee boards and have made very little progress so far.
Amazing repair.
Hi, I have a problem. You can't see the monsters or the player or the sun. Can the eproms be?
It would be eproms, if you don't have a probe try removing and reseating the roms first. Beyond that it will require a bit of investigation I'm afraid
Nice, If a line was stuck on the rom then it might cause a bus contention in the real world (fighting with the other roms and causing the jail bars) where as in mame, the issue would only show up when that particular rom was accessed for the gfx. You could I guess force the faulty rom data bit line somewhow in mame, and then original fault would probably show up. I had a bootleg kung fu master that had bad colours in half of the objects, and could reproduce the fault in mame by forcing a line low or high in the gfx drawing code toggling colour tables. The offending line on the pcb could also be toggled to produce the same result, however I never got to the bottom of it as the bootleg was quite different than the origonal schematics. I also had a track and field which has a gfx fault ( or bad code and wouldn't run - I forget) , roms read ok, but still had to replace one of them to repair the board (maybe the chip enable output was stuck on ?)
Yeah this method isn't infallible but it's helped me more than once.
