I'm interested to know which parts you agree with and which parts you don't agree with! I wish I learned sooner not to buy too fast. Actually, I think I haven't really learned that lesson yet! 😅😅😅 On the question, I guess it depends on the watch if I can justify it to myself that it's worth whatever amount they're charging. If it's just an amount, i guess $300 max per watch but if it was let's say the Rolex OP, maybe i can emotionally prepare myself to pay for retail amount!

Haha, great video Eve, just 2 years too late for me. I've learned all these lessons over the last 2 years of my collection journey, and agree with all of them. I started by purchasing fashion and Ali-Express watches, all crap and cheap quartz watches from Jan 2020 to June 2020. Once I started watching RUclips watch channels, I learned about mechanical and what are quality materials used in watches and started upping my game. I also don't buy to sell and have never sold a watch so my collection has hit over 50 watches, but now know my goals with what watches I want and desire and follow all of these rules now. My core collection has hit 6 watches with 6 more high horology pieces on the wish list. I'm more of a buyer than a seller personality, next vid to help me would be on the topic of what is the best way to sell the 30+ watches that I purchased for $200 or less that I now realize are not good. I expect to come away with 50% or less than what I paid

    • @AliasEveWatches

Gosh... that's a lot!!! I'm not a seller too, so we're on the same boat on this. For my watches, I just plan on passing them on to family. 😔 I would recommend checking out @David Schwartz as he has a lot of experience selling old watches!

Great video! I always try to buy watches outside of the mainstream. In the end, a niche piece (let's say that vintage Credor or gold GS) will be attractive to a specialized collector, since there are very few examples existing in the world. Pick slowly, pick wisely and not too often.

That was a great vid, good points. About the only watches that I have that may gain value are my historical vintage pieces, but at the time I didn't think of reselling. I consider them heirloom items.

    • @AliasEveWatches

Same!!! There's something just amazing about old pieces that still run and I think I'll have a hard time letting them go. I do plan on saving them as heirloom pieces for the next generation. I see these vintage pieces are really precious and need to be treasured for as long as possible!

@@AliasEveWatches YES. I have a few that are 80+ years old and I'm amazed they still work. I'm always fascinated with our ability to have produced such tiny mechanical marvels. As a kid, automatic watches were basically magical to me.

  • @luked2767
    @luked2767 2 года назад +1

Having a 21 22cm wrist size I realy don't like anything over 40mm 41 or 4.5 can be OK depending on the lug to lug example the Hamilton feild khaki auto.
The first men's watch with a rotating bezel was around 28mm.
Just as its old does not mean its real, fake watches have always been made by smaller watchmakers in Switzerland and the USSR.
I have always made sure it's a watch I realy like before buying, if it comes and its not what I expected then I send it back.
You can buy nice vintage watches for a realy good price in the west but the big problem is most watchmakers will charge you around 250usd up, its best to find a small I dependant watchmaker that charges a decent rate on a young person hoping when they are older they will stick with them.
It's good to make sure you can find spares and movement parts, for orient owners you can now buy movements and real movement parts, before if a part broke it was the end of the watch.
It's much cheaper to example replace an Nh35 series movement or miyota than to have it serviced.
If you live in a country that has reasonable repair and service costs you can get some real vintage bargains, Rotary used to be. UK company based in Switzerland was high quality and a household name but new rotary watches are just cheap quartz movements made in China, they make a couple of Autos but they don't use good movements and just coast using the Rotary name like alot of other brands do.
With kickstarter campaigns you have to be careful and do your reacherch, example anyone who went with the Phillip lorretti spaghetti watches did not get anything, watchmaking in Italy is mostly dead and it was started by 2 Estonian brothers.....
I would say always use a credit card or a payment method that you can claim the funds back If the goods don't come or don't come as advertised.
Movement costs usuaky increase 5 to 10 dollars a year and so do production costs in China, the NH series of movements have a spotty supply from Malaysia and the seagull st19 chronograph movements have gone up at least 20 dollars a watch or more.
I'm happy I got my 1963 40mm sapphire with Swanneck before prices went up, I would have gone for the 38mm but the 40mm was a decent amount thinner.
For any UK, EU or any nations that have an import tax. Half of Japanese sellers are willing to send as low value or as a low value gift on customs, if you buy on Ali express you can dodge the VAT by going over the 135 pounds or 150 euro mark, and all sellers will agree to mark it as 10 or 15usd, it means that buying a 136 pound watch will work out cheaper than buying a 115 pound watch as it will have 20% VAT,
So I often find myself buying 2 watches or a load of parts then reselling the ones I don't need as the savings are so much and if you check the ebay prices in your country you can make a little money as most people don't want to wait 2 weeks for something from China.
Another good tip is if you cant find it have it made, many stores on Ali express will even print your own branding you could choose a Nh35 a Japanese made s. Epson movement or a seagull 2824/2834 clone, I have had very good experiences with Chinese 2824 clones and they run just as well or better than ETA and stellita most of the time if well regulated.
Or you could buy the parts and make them yourself.
I lived in China and have visited some factory's in shenzhen, you would be surprised how many low to mid range Japanese and Swiss brands have almost everything apart from the movements made in China.
I would recommend anyone into watches buy a cheap tool kit, some magnifiers, rodico, a 7 dollar demagnitizer, a tube of polly watch if you own an acriclic watch (I can't find half of my watch making tools as when I moved house I have no idea where most of it ended up I know it's in the house I just can't find it) It can be hard to justify the price of a 100 dollar plus timograph but if your watch maker is charging 50 dollars for regulation it could be worth it.
On places like ebay they are realy pushing up the prices of vostok to over 100USD when they are under half that delivered from Russia so buy fro merinome or the christipol city website but don't expect it to come anytime soon, it can take months.
Asking grandparents and family members for old watches or even freinds older family members you can get some nice pieces for free or at a low cost.
Some watch collectors buy and sell regularly but unless it's a desirable model don't expect it to hold, retain or go up in value just buy what you realy like.
I'm realy not liking the trend of some Chinese watch brands pricing themselves out of the market, seiko is also getting quite high.
For anyone wanting to buy a swatfh group brand watch be aware that yes they upgraded the 2824 to the powermatic 80, 80 hours of power reserve is great, changing the movement speed from 28,800bph to 21,600bph is not and if you want it serviced or regulated it will cost you alot as no microajustment screw, no levers, just 2 weights on the balance to change the speed (like on rolex or in-house tudor) and if the beat error is bad then back to the factory.
They should at least give people the option.
Also avoid the swissmatic movement like the pluage.
If you want a swatch brand watch with the 2824 look on the grey or used markets for one with a standard 2824.

    • @AliasEveWatches
      @AliasEveWatches  2 года назад

I really appreciate you sharing your perspective on the video! 🙏🏼 I haven't really thought about service costs in the West as it's not as crazy expensive here in the Philippines. I guess that makes vintage collecting prohibitive for people in the West.
      Thanks Luke! 😄

Its realy nice to see a young female watch enthusiast as not so many, plus you seem like you know both Eastern and western cultures well, with great English and that's a plus for me as I usualy live in East Asia, had to come home for covid and still waiting until I can come back :(
Used and vintage women's watches are usualy alot cheaper, but not alot of great new ones, especially autos.
I think a great video would be what watches do young women find attractive as I have mostly had compliments on my red dial kamasu and 090 vostok with shark mesh.
Buying vintage watches are a real gamble as you will pay more to get it serviced most of the time and realy need to know what your looking for as so many fakes, fraken watches and random watches that say they have millitary history but just made around the 1940s. Alot of fake omegas and converted pocket watches.
Never ever buy a watch new or vintage from India, you will get a pretty dial but that's it.
The only good deals on vintage watches I can find are new old stock 1970s 1980s watches from China, the oil is still fine in most and good sellers will regulate them I got a nice one for 25 pounds.
It's kind of the reason Vostoks are so popular as they are basically new manufacture watches made just like they used to be in the 60s but now x3 the price from local sellers compared to Russian sellers if your lucky enough to find one.
I usualy try to avoid buying watches that I can't buy movements for as it's much cheaper to replace them, I've had realy good results with seagull ETA 2824 type clones and decently made ones are just as accurate, plus they are now around the same cost as an Nh35.
My orient kamasu was out of action as while adjusting the hair spring jumped over the adjustment lever, I'm lucky they just started to sell spares and whole movements.
To get it repaired with a new balance and spring will cost me 10 pounds less than to replace the whole movement, and the watchmaker I know has a very fair price, but its less than 2 years old, and a JDM with kanji date.
Before covid I would travel often and have spent most of my adult life outside the UK, when my father died his 1960s rolex GMT got stolen in hospital (in the 60s you could buy it for around 800usd in todays money, not cheap but it would be hard to find any Swiss auto for that price now)
So I have finally found a reasonably priced 28,800 gmt movement that's accurate and reliable but it has some crazy sizes, so Im trying to build a prototype vintage looking GMT watch.
I realy don't recommend anyone buying a parnis or other Chinese modern rolex GMT clone as the movement can be noisy, innnacurate and often break but it's cheap to replace I guess.
