VW Golf MK7 (5G) rear door water leak

- Wet floor in the back row of Volkswagen #GolfMK7 is a common issue caused by damaged seal of the speaker. #Water draining though the back door is slowly dripping on the #footwell and can cause further damage in the car. To fix this "wet carpet" issue you will need to remove door card and the speaker.
➡️ To remove door card you need to start with interior door handle trim. Then remove two torx screws. There's also a lock that you need to rotate - hidden behind the red reflective plastic. After that you need to pull the card towards you. It's held by 6 clips. With clips undone slightly lift the card to release it from the edge close to the window. You can disconnect all wiring from the door card or hang it somewhere to have access to the speaker.
➡️ Speaker is installed with rivets which you need to drill out. Then you can use knife to remove old seal and replace it with new one. I'm using neoprene tape. Also you can replace rivets with screws to have more control over the force used to hold the speaker in place.

I found this vid helpful. 2015 Golf SV, both rear doors leaking into footwells.
Removed door card, drilled out the speaker-housing rivets, cleaned away the perished foam-rubber seal, applied bathroom silicone sealant to same location as previous seal on the speaker housing, placed back in the door and used new pop-rivets to re-secure. Door card re-attached.
Some points:
A set of proprietary trim-removal tools is recommended.
The two securing bolts for the door card are easy to access and remove. The quarter turn securing fixing (behind the reflector), is also straightforward to turn (I used a torch to help see this). The other door card pop-in locators/fastenings are a real pain to get released. Bank on some of these being damaged in the process as the plastic is quite brittle. I suggest buying a few spares before doing the job. Lifting the door card off at the top of the door requires more upward force and “wiggling” than I expected. I disconnected the electricals to allow door card to hang away from immediate work area. Re-connections and putting everything back is a doddle.
One other thing, I fashioned a small piece of tough plastic sheet to tape inside the door metal, draped behind the full height of the speaker, to act as a water deflector. A bit fiddly to do but hopefully will give another level of protection.
FOR EVERY GOLF 7 OWNER: check these out:
(tip: keep a toilet paper roll in the sidepockets of the booth. Thats how i noticed my problem, it was wet, even tho no water was visible)
1. slam vents (water in booth or underneath the backseat) take vents off, clean and apply tons of silicone, new ones will corrode eventually.
2. Panoramic roof drains (they might be clogged leading to infiltration by the panoramic roof) ugly mess, stained interior on all walls down to the footwell.
3. Speaker sealant foam (all 4)(water underneath the speakers grill and on the inside of the door sealant at speaker level, leads to water in the footwell and mold later) ugglier mess.
4. Reverse camera cover/drain pipe (water in the booth).
I was lucky. Had all of them.
5. Tail lights. Water in booth. Dont know how to fix this, but check after pressure washing your car.
6. while fixing the speakers check the holes for the interior door trim clips, if there are water dripping stains (on the metalic part of the door or the rubber part of the clips), consider applying sealant or vaseline.
Just to improve your comment from beginning...
Renault megane grandtour IV same thing on every car.
I've been puzzling over exactly this problem for the last couple of weeks and then, suddenly, I wonder if RUclips has the ansa. Eh voila. Thank you sir... absolutely genius video. Well done!!!
This video is dated the 25th July 2020, I have had the same problem on both sides of my golf I repaired the right hand side last year, I bought a brand new speaker and the correct pop rivets and refitted the new speaker which is supplied with a sticky gasket to stop the water leaking into the vehicle, big mistake wasted my money it did not solve the problem, had to remove the door panel again this time a few of the panel connectors broke costing more money. This time I used a silicon sealant all around the speaker casing, let it cure for 24 hours then did a water test and I am pleased to say this worked.
👍
My 2016 sportwagen has the exact same problem. Surprised to see many others with the same problem.
Huge disappointment with VW. None of my previous cars from different brands had this kind of problem.
Thank you very much for the video!
Cheap foam instead of rubber seal. I guess they don't care as long as it lasts the guaranty period.
@@mrfixpl Finally I had some time to fix this. Followed your video. The gaskets were in horrible shape all torn apart. Replaced them with roof tar. All done. Thanks!
@@mrfixpl сколько у них гарантийный срок?
you're skipping the most important parts which are how to actually take off things, all the practical parts are left out
@@kozmagergely there is a lot of tutorials to remove the door panel
Thanks. Just followed the instructions today. Golf is only 3.5 yrs old and out of warranty. I used mastic, put a bead around and re riveted them
back in. If you can plan ahead good idea to get a couple of new door clips as they can easily break as the get pulled out. Vw suggested I put new speakers in but the speakers work fine just need new seal. Did job myself Saved myself £££££££ today. Thanks
Damn mine has been leaking almost since it was new but just a little bit. Now it has gotten worse. Thanks for this tutorial. I would have never thought it was the speaker!
Great video just had the very same issue. You have saved me a fortune imagine what a VWAG dealer would charge, and no doubt spoof you about the leak.
Happy to help!
Brilliantly done, just a little more detail as you removed each part would have been good,,but thank you so much for taking the time to film and upload this.
Use silicone glue all around the speakers and problems solved. My only concern is that this might not be the main cause of the problem as there are lots of other holes for the door trim clips which wasn't sealed. So it looks like water wasn't meant to be in there at first place , so the outer window apertures seal isn't doing their job anymore which requires replacing and maybe check if the drainage hole in the door is blocked which create build up .
I just managed to pop off just the bottom of the door panel and it was just enough room to smear silicone sealant around the speaker. Hopefully it will sort it.
Happened on my 2016 Golf, leaking from the 4 speakers. Volkswagen Canada accepted a good will settlement so that was a cheap fix.Happy cause I love that Golf.
Great that you worked things out!
Excellent, a very well explained overview. Thank You, 2017 MK7 Golf Wagon SE, 42k miles, Memphis, TN
Happy to help!
Had exactly the same problem, and the flanges where the screws go through were cracked as well. I put non-hardening sealant all the way round the speaker flange, used large self-tapper screws with big washers, but it still leaked. More round the door hole and it still leaked. It runs off the bottom of the speaker but can be getting in all the way round, I can see beads in the cracks in the flange for the upper screws. I can't see those spire clips and foam tape working properly, I'll have to get a replacement speaker.
I knew exactly where the water was coming from but I couldn't figure out why it's there. Thanks you for your research!
Happy to help!
@@mrfixpl Ok, it's actually not that easy in my case. I just did what you said, tested with water and the problem is actually the strip around the whole metal panel on which door's components sit. I can't remove it, do I just silicone around, will that work well? There are huge gaps, all molded.
Actually only one part is molded, but it's pretty big gap. Also all four doors. Seat Toledo II.
It’s becoming a common fault on all Mk7 and the Mk7.5 rear doors leaking water into the footwell from the speaker seal, also the large rubber grommet that has the door wiring loom can leak water too. I found if your remove the speaker housing and run a bead of sealant like tiger seal then refit the speaker housing back into door, it’ll never leak water again.. I usually do the large rubber grommet at the same time while you have the door panel off.
Thanks for the tip!
I actually had the exact same problem with the exact same door on Passat B8. Just found your video by mistake
Haha oh no... My foot well was sodden, so found this video. I was really hoping it was going to be a quick door seal replacement video. I am now scared. But thank you, it's a great video and will be really helpful.
Happy to help! While you're at it, you can upgrade your speakers to an aftermarket option as well.
Im in same boat mate. 07 chrysler 300c. You get yours fixed?
This problem probably occurs with every car in the group V, AG I had the same situation in the B3 passat, but the car was already a bit old and here the car was relatively young
Same with Seat Toledo II '01
...same with Renault Megane Grandtour IV, VW is not only one.
We have "das auto" product also from France and Japan (Toyota and Lexus).
Ovner!
Watching this brilliant video on how to address vw golf leak, guess what comes up, an advertisement for a new golf... Unreal .. F*** Off with yer advertisement VW, stand over and recall our leaking golfs due to your poor materials and workmanship.
😂
Definitely gone downhill in quality over the years.
Hi do you mind sharing the accessories that you’ve used? The screws and mount and also the rubber seal please?
Thanks a lot mate, I have this issue for years! The fu**ing idiots (because I cannot call them mechanics) from VW dealer I bought the car didn't find any issue, (despite of showing the water collection in a captured video).
this is a notorious issue from VW mine is also happening in my mk4 golf GTI (yes you heard that right...a MK4
I have owned two Golf SV Mk7 both of these have this problem with the rear doors on the 65 models on the 64 front & back doors a common fault unrecognized by the dealership.
Removed speakers x2 rear today and found both seals to be broken at the bottom of speaker frame , will try a strong silicone seal .
Actually I'm thinking about replacing OEM speakers with something aftermarket. Hoping for no leaks and better sound.
Let me know what speakers you use!
Job done new silicon no more Leaks
Both my rear speakers were the culprit for my water logged rear footwells. Silicone mastic and self tapping screws cured my problem
Water cooled speakers 👍
Just come across this problem in my 2013 Mk7, having already sorted out leaks from the tail lights and also the rear bumper vents 🙄 Quick question with this and it may be a stupid one, but rather than drill out the rivets and remove the speaker/holder, would it not have the same effect to leave the speaker in place but apply a sealant around the outside of it, to stop the water from behind the speaker coming into the car? Thanks in advance.
I wanted to check what's inside the door anyway.
Did u do urs that way, i plan on doing mine the same way as preventative maintenance
Do you have more information on the metal clip and screw sizes?
I used 4mm self tapping screws and fixings. Every hardware or autoparts store has them, couple of dozen for £3
Dzięki. Miałem ten sam problem w passacie b5fl tylko uszczelki padały przy wewnetrznej grodzi drzwi. Silikon sanitarny załatwił sprawę. Dzięki oczywiście łapa dla zasiegu
where is the water supposed to drain? won’t it build up behind the speaker and rot the door eventually? i cannot find the drain holes on my 2door 2015 golf
@@eagle56786 there are two drain slots along the bottom of the door, between the outer lip and rubber weather seal. It’s a very narrow space to fit a finger, but you’ll see it if you look from below.
Great video. Is it possible to remove and resell the speakers without undoing the wires from the door panel…? I’m concerned that I’ll forget which wires will go where..!
thank you...from Argentina...
God bless you I think I have found the solution for my mk6 2012
Hope you will fix it before water will damage your vehicle! Fingers crossed!
@@mrfixpl thank you I've been gettin it out of there as much as needed
Same problem happened to my car.....thanks for your video

@@mrfixpl problem not fixed bro
Replace the speaker or seal you current one. There's not much of other options.
@@mrfixpl bro I checked the speaker seal in good condition. I think problem with my car is rubber beading.

Thank you for this amazing video, you saved the day !!!

Changing seal will not help in long term. Just use quality seal in tube and seal all around speaker and half way down metal plate which cover window mechanism. This is permanent way to stop leaking from door panels.
I had a leak through the door card clip near to the speaker on a MK6. A tiny amount of silicone sealer fixed this.
i also have a mk6 vw and currently have this issue, can you explain this more 😭
I wanted to know if any of the silicone seal will work or there’s a specific one that I will have to buy?
My MK7 GTI smells like mildew and I’m trying to find the cause. Maybe this is it. I haven’t noticed any water but will inspect. I’m very frustrated that this is even an issue. I take great care of my car but now I couldn’t even sell it because it smells! Thank you for your video.
Check the trunk. Both the headliner and the spare area.
Thank you for your reply. I will check the trunk. But my carpet does smell near the rear passenger door and front passenger door. I am going to follow your video and check the speaker seals next weekend. I also checked the A/C drain hose but it seems ok
Thank you for the info. I'm gonna use silicone on mine so I dont have to remove the speaker
Good luck!
Did it work? Im not confident drilling my car!
Just my rear passenger side rear seat keeps getting wet, the floor is dry...? Can't find where it's coming from 😩
Sunroof drains?
Same here, only rear seats. Did you solve the problem?
Could you not just put sealant around the speaker?
You could. I just don't want to.
Great video. Succinct and clearly explained. Thank you.
Absoutly brilliant video the best ive seen on this problem.ive the Edition 40 love it and just slow about taki g off the door card to fix.would it still help if i use silicone or a sealer all around the speaker witout taking it off?
I don't think that you can do it properly without removing the speaker.
@@mrfixpl i have been thinking and id agree with you do it once and do it right
When i finally got around to fixing this problem it wasnt the seal for me but the speaker was cracked around the pop rivet i just sealed it up with Tex 7.i know nobody had the car because im the only owner since new so it was cracked from day 1 just the crack spread over tine to more of the speaker
Hello, what Bolts U-nut Clips did you use? Thank you
Same problem on my MK6.
I understand that it has to do with cost savings. But dam this is some cheap shit. They should've double insulated it somehow or used a way better material. Maybe both the standardseal and a line of silicone.
Got my 19 Gti rear speakers replaced and still water leaks from behind that panel….
Remove door card, pour water on the window and check where's the water coming from.
Interesting video, my 2018 T roc had water in the rear footwell, ended up requiring two new speakers front and rear drivers side. However one month down the line I've got water in the rear footwell again, any thoughts? Thanks
Do anyone know why it's made like this? Why isn't the speaker closed off?
Might answer myself.... Is it because the speaker needs lots of room/air on the backside to sound good? But then again, smartphone speakers sound good for their size. Car speakers should be able to be closed off and still sound good.
Could you maybe tell me which cables (adapter) are you using for the rear speakers.
Don't have any rear speakers installed and there also no cables in the rear door. Looks like you've got a nice adapter . Does this also connected in the rear door adapter or did you have to pull the cable through the door by yourself?
Thanks 👍
I'm not using an adapter. This is how factory speakers look like.
Did this actually work?
I would have thought it would still leak between the foam and those mounts for the screws, the mounts would break the seal surely 🤔
I got one side replaced in the garage for over €200 so the second I did myself. I had to replace the whole speaker unit as the plastic housing on the speaker was badly cracked...
what size screws and fasteners did you use please?
Anyone have an updated take on solutions, I have a 2015 sport wagon and noticed this problem days after I got the car and it rained! Way worse left side, fear mold under the carpet now, was a rainy last year where I live, now trying to really solve the issue
I’ve got this on drivers passenger side, it’s very minimal at the moment and the door card is never wet, would it be the same fix?
Classic Volkswagen
I have just valeted a 19 plate golf full of Mould. I told the customer this is a problem with the cheap seal around the speaker in the rear of the car opens the boot and the spare wheel compartment was under a foot of water 😆 if I could only add pics to my comments lol. Many years ago I had the same problem with a 17 plate golf......and still VW have not solved it. Stay clear of the golfs 🤣🤣🤣
were you buy this seal for spekear ? can you drap link of ebay
How did the seal get damaged?
George Papa it’s just an issue on the MK7 platform. I see posts about it almost every day on MK7 groups.
There’s other holes lower then the speaker is so water can get in that way.
Hi buddy, I followed you and managed to repair my speakers and have had no further water leaks. However, 6months later, I've got stop/start malfunctions with the EPC light sending the car into limp mode, as well as the car intermittently failing to restart from stop/start. NO fault codes are showing and I suspect a corroded electrical component is causing voltage spikes and other electrical havoc.
Do you have any advise on possible electrics that could have been affected under the carpet? I never removed it and the back footwells were pretty soaked.
Why not just use silicon around the outside of the speaker where it sits without removing it?
Thanks man
Hope it helped!
How can they make cars for years and years and pass all of those difficult tests yet they are unable to make a door that doesn't leak?
I mean what the fuck?!
My thoughts exactly when I had this happen to my golf 3 separate times on different doors. Within 1 year of ownership, 15,000kms.
@@Austin-nx1kl cheap car. Toyota doesn't leak.
Golf MK4 had the same problems and Fabia MK1 (owned both? - pretty shocking that a maker such as VW/VAG cars still make cars with leaks...
I have same problem will try and let you know
It seems obvious that this is a fault VWAG are well aware of. I had my left rear door leak repaired under warranty but now the right rear door has the same leak and I'm out of warranty. This should be a recall issue and not left to owners of Mk7.5 Golf's to fork out for repairs. Lesson learned I won't be buying another VW
Jeeeez VW c'mon , this is unacceptable.
What are the four things that the screws will attach to?
Some time ago I've bought set of cheap speakers to install in an arcade machine and had those 4 lying around. No idea how it's called. 😅
Speed nut / sheet metal nut.
Hi. It might a bit silly but how about to use plumbers mait?😂
Having the same issue with my 2014 gti
I have caught it late and it seems the water is now under the carpet on the back floor
Carpet is dry to touch but if I squash my hand down on the floor I can hear more water
What is the best way to drain that does anyone have any advice?
Just found the same problem, horrific stuff. I’ve taken out rear seats and gonna attempt removing carpet to aim fan underneath to dry it out
Where did you get the tape to resale? I need to do it to my one lol
On the U.K. forums most people have just used bathroom sealant. Works a lot better
Hi, what is the solution for this problem? THanks
The term "If only everything in Life was as reliable as a Volkswagen" is long defunkt, trading on old glories VW in my opinion is nowhere near the quality it used to be, and anyone who owns one for any amount of time can contest to that !
It’s better to use silicone.
😂 i need to check my shitbox b8 vw passat... ugh...
My Audi A4 b5 year 1995 never drop of water inside still after all these years... So you see the quality of these new cars, crap.
What a stupid design my past 2 leons have had this problem and the dealer allways say they fix it but they dont fuck these shitty cars
