You can buy a myriad of continuous/piano hinges from McMaster-Carr with more than wide enough leaves. No better way to distribute the loading! I rebuilt our platform to handle a California King-sized Purple Hybrid and my 6'-5", 292# self. Due to my wife's petite stature, I ditched the struts and installed linear actuators. Push of a button and the bed lifts and second push it closes. 12VDC units that are off-the-shelf items. Be advised that you may have issue with the strut mounts with the extra heavy duty struts. They may deform the light duty brackets or cause the screws to tear out.
On your washer/dryer plates, use of external tooth lockwashers under the head of the sheet metal screws is appropriate.
Forgive me, half a century as a practicing engineer. 😁

If your strut connectors on the lid side pull out (mine did)--replacing screws with through bolts with washers on top is the solution.

Just a suggestion. I added a piece of carpet to the plywood under the mattress. Every time I flipped the mattress I found I had to remove a lot of splinters from the mattress due to the plywood. The carpet solved that problem. Oh, and I got the carpet free from a local carpet company. Asked them if they had any scrap pieces of carpet and they did.

Bed project is complete. I just reinforced the existing hinges with a 1x4 under the plywood. Didn't have time to go buy new hinges. Lets see if it lasts. It works great now. I would have to lift the bed and then hold it up with my back while my wife got stuff out or put stuff in. So, this is so much better!

Do you think the cabinets are strong enough to withstand the machines bouncing about ?
Another fail for the RV manufacturing sector and doubt about their research and development process ,a case of ,oh there's an opening let's chuck things in there and hope for the best .
You wouldn't accept a vehicle if the battery fell out or the windows rattled out ,so why accept RV failures

When I was young and a crazy hippie living in a schoolie I used strap gate hinges. Our Winnebago had piano hinges. Those go on uprights - where the folding key cover goes. I grew up with a parlor grand and it had real hinges. I’m keeping the mattress that came on the Brinkley. I love that the foot end is curved. Since it doesn’t hurt my back it’s staying.

  • @jollygreenfe1

The hinges are a great idea. However, if you are concerned even a little bit about them pulling out, may i recommend taking a little time to pull the screws out and put a little wood glue in each hole. it may help the screws from pulling back out in any situation that you had mentioned in the video.

Maybe consider replacing the outboard hinge screws on the bed platform with #8 or #10 thru bolts with washers and lock nuts. Would give you plenty of holding strength for the long term without relying on the bite of a wood screw.

Try a piano hinge, some people call them a continuous hinge. Amazon even has them 3“ x 36“ two of them being 72 inches will solve your issue. I’ve used them before many times actually.

Nice video. Appreciate the update on the bed. My wife just complained this past weekend that she can't pick it up with the heavier mattress now. The bed is my next project after I finish the compression latches on the propane doors and especially the front door with thousands of dollars' worth of solar equipment and batteries in it. They give us two thumb twists and a terrible little lock up there. Still deciding on three lockable compression locks or two on the edges with a slam latch in the middle

Silicone / RTV would anchor the washer and dryer without any screws. Finding the right amount to apply, takes some practice. (Coat the metal straps, hold in place till silicone sets). But; your silicone method makes disassembly much easier / cleaner / better, if ever necessary. Outstanding vid., thanks again.

I agree with you on the stock RV mattresses just being a placeholder, and that's fine. I don't want an RV manufacturer putting a $1k mattress in my unit, charging me for it, and then I have to replace it with one I like. We've had residential Sealy Posturpedic mattresses in our fifth wheel for over a year of full-time use, and we LOVE them! They are pretty heavy though. Our queen size is about 100 lbs.

There's another trick that can be done to the straps on the washer and dryer units - before the straps are put on, insert a thin piece of auto trim self adhesive tape (think the 3m foam stuff but it's thinner and wicked strong). Then put the screws through and into the sides. The tape will help give another level of adhesion to the strap screws. To make assembly much easier, remove the protective tape and put a piece of folded parchment paper in it's place that you can pull out (much easier than the original tape ever comes out). I've done this fix to a few brackets in my 30' DP that are still holding strong 6 years later.

  • @TDub_ADV

Chad, if the silicone does not hold those screws in try some 3m 5200 Marine sealant. Its a lot tougher then standard silicone. I used it to secure lots of screws that would back out on my bass boat when silicone would not. A dab on the threads will do it. The pounding and vibrations that a boat goes thru in rough water make our roads looks like smooth sailing......

You might want to consider rivnut inserts to help prevent screws from loosening. Essentially, one drills a hole large enough to accept the appropriate RIVNUT, the RIVNUT is installed using the proper tool. Put a screw in and tighten it down. A little silicone might help keep it from unscrewing.

Chad, for the W/D, you can always use both sheet metal screws and rivets at the same time. Another solution to keep in your book of ideas is a riv nut tool. Lots of grills and such use these. It is used to put in a threaded insert. Much like the rivet, this tool expands the threaded insert. Then, take your bolts, put some blue gel thread locker on and you are good to go. If you use blue, you can break it loose if you need to remove. Red, forget it! Use gel so it stays put and doesn't run down your hands or W/D!Limited-time deal: TOLRET Rivet Nut Tool Rivet Nut Kit, Rivnut Tool Kit with 10 Metric and SAE Mandrels, 100 Pcs Rivet Nuts Assortment Kit, Professional Ratchet Nutsert Tool Kit with Rugged Carrying Case, TR21 a.co/d/7X8vlHL

If the silicone OVER the screws doesn’t work, consider cleaning the area by getting all the old silicone off very well then using alcohol or mineral spirits to clean any grease or oil off the surface, then put the silicone UNDER the screws. If you’ve ever tried to remove ANYTHING with silicone under it, you would know, this will work!

Knowing that you have the suspension upgrades on the RV,I'm a bit surprised that it's giving you the earthquake ride that's causing it to shake rattle and roll ?
Maybe the dryer and washer needs a separation shelf between them ?
The screws are really making a mess of the thin tin machine cabinets and there is the possibility that the screws will rip thins apart .
Foam packing could be used and higher up to support the dryer and reduce the falling off the bottom machine effect !
Obviously the manufacturer doesn't know how their RVs react in the real world .
I hope this isn't an admission that you are taking your rig off the highway ?

    • @ChangingLanes
      @ChangingLanes  25 дней назад

I would only use mesh when I can't get ethernet to the access point. The only difference between a mesh and a wired AP is the way they connect to the network. A mesh connection needs to use the radio for serving clients and communicating upstream to the router, constantly balancing the two (usually on one radio). A wired connection eliminates that upstream radio component. Any time you can eliminate a wireless segment, overall connectivity benefits. But, sometimes a mesh is the only practical way to extend a wireless network.

Definitely heard of " enough meat."
After 45 years aircraft mechanic, 70 years of working on everything that rolls, floats, flies and building and rebuilding houses, yes sir, I've definitely heard that term.
Only thing I would've offered was put the screws in you brackets in "wet" with a little rtv on threads and in the holes. What you did will probably last forever.
Its a shame that you have to do those repairs, but a stick and brick has problems as well. And a house doesn't go through near what an rv goes through, unless it goes through a tornado.
Y'all stay safe out there on your travels.

  • @bfattori01
    @bfattori01 26 дней назад

I've had THE EXACT SAME problems and found that, once I was set with how something would be (forever) I would set the screw with JB Weld. I have not had anything come apart that is now permanent. How will it handle loads over time? I will let you know, but for 2 years already - those screws have all not budged.
*Edit*: For those hinges, I used plumbing strap behind the wood (same as washers) but it distributes across the entire strap. It made mounting a desk and workbench under my Murphy Bed more rigid. Haven't had a problem since I installed it over 2 years ago.
