The gatherings you see are domestic workers having their one day off a week, mostly from the Philippines or Indonesia, many gather on the streets every Sunday to picnic, dance, exchange gossips and send things back home. Locals are really tolerant and understanding with their contribution to society. Many of the high-end streets like the ones you saw are even shut off for them to gather, which is quite a lively and unique scene! (Imagine Regent Street shuts off for that every Sunday!)
Thanks for this information, It’s great to hear about the sense of community and support for domestic workers here in Hong Kong to gather like this. I can not quite imagine them doing the same on Regent Street in London! 🤣 Appreciate you sharing this!

Enjoy your stay in HK! It's worth getting an Octopus travel card (equivalent of an Oyster card) instead of buying singles for each trip. There is a large population of live-in domestic helpers from overseas working in Hong Kong who typically have Sunday as their day off. On such days they are not compelled to stay in at their employers' homes and therefore tend to gather in larger public areas such as Central and Mong Kok to chill and catch up with their friends.
Thank you for the tips! The Octopus card sounds like a great idea and so much simplier! I’ll definitely look into it. And thanks for the heads-up about the large gatherings on Sundays

13:15 Once upon a Sunday afternoon, I was asked by a tourist with the similar question when I said that today was holiday. Because in Hong Kong, we call Sunday as a public holiday and some places will be opened to the public & some traffic restrictions will be set aside during the public holiday.
So.. those gatherings are workers from Philippines and Indonesia. Most workers are from Philippines. I have a worker from Philippines here right now! Indonesia knows how to speak Cantonese, not fluent in them though. Philippines doesn’t know any Cantonese, so I talk to them in English! (I recommend you to go to Taiwan. If you have. It’s okay.)
11:20 Sundays in Central are pretty much closed off for Philipines domestic helpers, actually you'll see pretty much the same in Causeway Bay near the Victoria Park for Indonesia Domestic Helpers. It's not a special holiday but like an unwritten rule where the locals get out of the way so that the domestic helpers can enjoy their holiday. It's kinda funny display of a silly ignorance from a foreigner, and I don't mean to be offensive, please accept my apologies in advance for this comment.

Her name is Mary :D They usually have breaks on sundays, come back home at 9pm !
Thank you for sharing your experiences and insights about Hong Kong! I appreciate the tip about the Octopus card and the MTR. I’ll definitely keep your advice in mind and stay aware during my travels. Thanks again for watching and taking the time to comment!
@@wilkowanders No problem :D Safe travels ! Also I’ve always heard your country’s ice cream is always broken ? Hong Kong is not ! You can get ice cream every time :D
Welcome🎉🎉🎉
Thank you 🙏
just so you know the crowd you saw with costumes, they are imported domestic helpers from Philippines or Indonesia
Thank you for sharing that context 🙏
You should had been entitled a free ride from Hong Kong to Sai Ying Pun as you took airport express. If you had bought an Octopus card which is the Oyster card in London, that would eliminate a lot of hurdles.
Ah, thanks for sharing this. Yeah I think someone else mentioned there is even an app version of the Octopus which would have been even simpler! I know for next time! 😃
We welcome you❤
Thank you for the warm welcome

For the next time I recommend you go to the Grand Hyatt Hong Kong but it is kind of expensive...

13:15 Once upon a Sunday afternoon, I was asked by a tourist with the similar question when I said that today was holiday. Because in Hong Kong, we call Sunday as a public holiday and some places will be opened to the public & some traffic restrictions will be set aside during the public holiday.
Thanks for sharing! :)
Welcome❤

I am from 🇭🇰 Hong kong
So.. those gatherings are workers from Philippines and Indonesia. Most workers are from Philippines. I have a worker from Philippines here right now! Indonesia knows how to speak Cantonese, not fluent in them though. Philippines doesn’t know any Cantonese, so I talk to them in English! (I recommend you to go to Taiwan. If you have. It’s okay.)
Thanks for your comment 🙏
I have not visited Taiwan yet but everyone tells me to go visit! I think it will be on my list now 😃
@@wilkowanders Oh, you should try the tanghulus in Taiwan. it’s sooooo delicious.
Thanks for comment, I was looking for the meeting point for my walking tour that day.
It was a bit overwhelming trying to find the location with the 36 degrees heat as sweat was dripping down my face the whole time!
welcome!!❤❤

14:58 Some of these DHL boxes could have been things that the domestic helper bought here and would be shipped back home for their families
Thanks for this context, This would make sense!
