    pro cooking tip: mushrooms are like little sponges. Rather than washing them in water, buy them whole and wipe them gently with a paper towel. This will help them get beautifully golden and avoid soggy shrooms. They're one of the easiest and fun things to slice so don't fear their wholeness.

    I think the "aimlessness" of this movie adds to the helplessness that you're supposed to feel at the main issue not being taken seriously. I personally liked the movie. Definitely not my favorite, but i saw the immediate connection to our current pandemic situation and it made me chuckle in a couple places and i noticed the reference to specific real life news events. (Ex the Greta Thunberg music concert charity thing)
    It feels like a sinking boat to you maybe because this is how these situations feel in real life, the irl reaction to things like a pandemic and climate change IS just a bunch of ppl yelling at each other. I don't think this film was intending to make any sort of "change" in the world other than to parody life.

    • @JanuaryEffect
      @JanuaryEffect 2 года назад +9

      I agree, it’s not necessary about climate change but more about this time in our lives where the events turn into opinions and ideologies (of course in the film they use the absurd in-your-face comet, but covid is kinda in-your-face too, and you know how it worked out), the greed for profit precedes common sense.. in the end all the rich old people that escaped cannot survive in the wild, even if the planet is picture-perfect

    Heavily disagree. As someone in the environmental movement since high school, it really highlights what the movement has been like for decades. We have been informing people for years that these issues were happening and the film does a great job of showing how rejection, denial, anxiety, depression, and apathy feel. Lots of people have gotten climate anxiety and depression years before the mental health issues were understood. Being able to show that experience and showing the other side where people don't take you seriously and/or are completely self-centered around the issue was spot on.
    It also shows how capitalist solutions aren't going to work the way that they think they will (carbon capture).

    • @Misseggy24
      @Misseggy24 2 года назад +13

      Agreed! If people think Don’t Look Up isn’t an accurate representation of the frustration that scientists have felt for decades, and the toll on mental health that climate change issues cause for many people, then they clearly mustn’t be people experiencing the ramifications of climate change themselves.

    • @cameron9385
      @cameron9385 2 года назад +3

      I'm not exactly in the sphere but personally I felt extremely anxious directly from the start of the movie. The close up shots of Leo's hands clenching as he stuttered through his words to an uninterested president were genuinely stomach wrenching for me. Something else I loved, which was an extremely personal experience, was that I thought the whole "Don't Look Up" slogan was just metaphorical to not believe what the conspiracy theorists saw as left wing lies, so I found it hilarious when (to me) it was revealed that no, they just literally hadn't looked up this whole time! Furthermore, talk about subtly all you want but I think for a movie like this it made far more sense to hit the viewer over the head with its message just like the scientists tried to do

So the movie expressed the exact feeling I have about the situation, plus it's extremely funny!

    • @malekhaddad1389
      @malekhaddad1389 2 года назад +2

      I loved it too, and I almost fully disagree with all of his complaints. More than a wake up call, it is a motivating call to do everything we can to fight together against climate change! It was also fun like you said haha!

    • @donovanwiebe2495
      @donovanwiebe2495 2 года назад +1

      @@malekhaddad1389 I think most of his complaints are valid, but just entirely subjective in a way that I can't agree with them. Also for me it isn't much of a wake up call, it's more of a vent for the way I feel about the situation. I mean, I know for a fact if my parents saw this movie their minds wouldn't budge. It wouldn't appeal to them at all, but it does a lot for me.
      Yeah, so I grew up in a small, very conservative, Christian town. Need I say more?
      Lol anyway, I never even heard of the concept until I was like 13 (I'm nearly 22 now). Every time I did hear about climate change it was treated like a given that it wasn't real. My mom would say that "It used to be global warming but now it's climate change because the science isn't real" and "in the '70's the earth was cooling, they can't make up their minds" and I would buy it. No one I knew ever said otherwise so I never had a reason to question it.
      I heard it from my parents, the pastors in church, my youth leaders, my friends... my grade 10 science teacher even showed us "evidence" showing that climate science was wrong. (Looking back that data is very easily disproven)
      Cut to September 2018 and I made a post on Reddit of some premature snow covering my car with the ironic caption "GLOBAL WARMING CONFIRMED" and I got some backlash for it. One of the comments said "Global warming confirmed, picture unrelated." I think it's funny now but at the time I was very surprised. I thought I was in the majority for not believing in climate change, because in my small bubble I was. In my eyes the few people who believed in climate change were just conspiracy theorists, similar to flat-earthers.
      My small town mind was blown at the revelation that I was in the minority and it kind of just ate at me for like two years, over time just gradually learning more and more about it until I finally decided to do a deep dive. hbomberguy's video definitely helped with this. The time of letting the thoughts sink in and the sudden deep dive were what helped me out of the bad mindset, and I started pressing my parents and friends on the issue, realizing that any arguments against it completely crumble with any amount of criticism.
      And right at the peak of all this; BOOM! Covid hits. Suddenly I'm watching my parents fall into all the conspiracies and lies, and I realize that I just can't trust my parents on a whole lot, especially when it relates to science. Over the course of covid to this point I've gone from a small town conservative to a big city Leftist. I moved away from that small town and left the bubble I was stuck in and I feel better for it.
      For the record, I'm still on good terms with my family, probably better actually since being away from them leads to a lot less arguing. Phone calls tend to be more mild mannered :)
      Sorry for giving you my whole life story... you did ask for it lol. It felt kinda good to write this all down tbh, thanks for the therapy sesh :)

  • @nathanielthrush5581
    @nathanielthrush5581 2 года назад +43

    Karsten, I respect you a lot and this is a good video idea. I would’ve preferred you tackle the ideas that don’t look up delves into-specifically the tabloidification (idk if that’s a word really) of American media amd politics, as well as the fact that a movie stands as a big fuck you to the capitalist framework, which is fairly unique for a movie with this kind of cast and reach. Rather, you focus on style and the actors, and your thoughts on the movie subject matter are all pretty vague and mixed in with this convoluted metaphor about Mac and cheese. There are legitimate criticisms of the movie, like the idea that the world wasn’t fleshed put enough and some of it was overly ridiculous, but it got the absurd nature of our current existence pretty spot on.
    To put it frankly, film nerds hate this movie. Politics nerds generally seem to like it. And if this movie doesn’t work for you, that’s okay. But I feel that this review was a bit hollow, like a stale noodle in an unopened box of mac and cheese. I wish you engaged with the issues in the movie more rather than throwing vague platitudes at it and hyper focusing on the style over the substance.

      Yeah, he also does something that I really hate and would only expect from a brain-dead conservative when he implies that Adam Mckay should do more for the cause, not just make an angry "preachy movie".He's a filmmaker he's making a film that tells people to take climate change more seriously or the result will be disastrous. That's literally the best he can do, he's not politician, he doesn't have serious power, and stuff like charity isn't gonna stop climate change (it isn't meant to, by the way, charity is basically a device for the upper class to make themselves look noble in the eyes of working-class people, while perpetuating the system that's destroying our lives and the planet we live one) so I don't know what he expects from Adam Mckay, sorry for the rant😮‍💨

    One of my favorite things is when I want to talk about whether or not I enjoyed a movie
    So I go to places to talk about whether or not I enjoyed a movie
    And I'm expecting to see some conversations about whether or not people enjoyed a movie
    And I get
    "It addresses relevant issues"
    "It may make you feel uncomfortable because it calls you out, but that doesn't mean it's a bad movie"
    "It satirizes things we see in everyday life"
    "It's incredibly timely and a message that needs to be heard"
    And I think
    "But... but do any of those things... mean it's a good movie? Or an enjoyable movie? At all?"
    Don't Look Up is a magnet for these kinds of conversations. I don't know where this idea came from that the fact that you can write an essay about a movie makes it good.
    (I actually think Don't Look Up is a decent turn your brain off movie.)

    Honestly I was fine with the anger of the film, anger is a very powerful emotion and can lead to some masterpieces. Honestly I thought it wasn't angry enough, if it went full Idiocracy I think it would've hit a lot harder, like, what if by the end you feel like the humans really deserve the comet hitting them? What if they get every chance to destroy it, but constantly fail to out of gross incompetence, greed and stupidity? Realistically, humans wouldn't be able to just solve the climate crisis, it would all be trial and error, and if we're at the 'six months' point, unless we get insanely lucky, things won't end well.

    Just want to give some honest criticism, I definitely enjoyed this video and would watch more like this, but one thing I would say is that you might want to either focus in on just comparing a film and recipe or limit the commentary of your process of cooking it to quick asides because it can be a little confusing to interpret which parts of the video are you making a statement on aspects of the movie or just commenting on your experience cooking the food. I can’t tell if you just conveniently were out of flour or if you planned that ahead of time. I kept scratching my head during this thinking, man this works really well, a little too well. Idk how you did it exactly but the illusion is def part of the fun.

    I honestly wish there were more films like Don't Look Up and Dr Strangelove. Sometimes you just wanna laugh at the terrible absurdities in the world, and those films (Don't Look Up especially) bring me such catharsis

    I found enjoyment because it’s nice for me to know that I’m right and my relatives are wrong. It’s very cynical of me but that’s how I feel

    I love that Karsten wanted to start a series where he reviews movies and cooks but he doesn't know very much about cooking and doesn't cook a lot. It is both funny and seems like a good way to challenge yourself

    Oh no! He's made one of those first person POV cooking TikToks. I can only imagine he had a camera strapped to his head while cooking.
