It doesn't look super great but you're wrong about it looking bad or cheap. It's a reasonably handsome design.

If I had to buy a car right now this would be it. I am someone who isn't much into technology even though am 19 years old. This car is everything I would ever want. Just as Sofyan repeated, it isn't a very luxurious car even though it has great features. I am a car enthusiast but not into tech, weird I know. This car looks great in my opinion and has great features for it's price point.

Which is what I paid for a 2020 (the lower range). Neither trim line comes with alloy wheels anymore. On the other hand the LX is a steal with power windows, power door locks (manual opening, no remote), power mirrors, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, backup camera ... and for 2020 a wonderful new engine "stolen" from the new Hyundai Venue plus the IVT (Gamma 2 1.6L, which kicks GDI with potential intake valve oil buildup to the curb in favor of gold old MPI). A real commuter car if you have a 50 mile commute and want 43 MPG, including two cold starts and the drive to the freeway, without the cost of a hybrid. Now if only Kia would drop the $250 AEB/LKDW safety features into the 2021 across the line. But, yeah, this is a dying breed.

I asked what they did to keep it going and just simply oil, brakes, timing belts and just the basic maintenance. Definitely got lucky and got their money's worth.

My old Ford Focus 3door is pretty comparable to the Rio. Small, easy to drive, easy to park (beach town), comfortable. It’s my main car. I’m over 50 and like small cars.

That Kia Rio would blow the doors off my first car in a drag race, a 1978 Chevrolet Camaro with 250 CID in-line 6 with a whole 110 hp if in mint condition and properly tuned. For a car in this class 0-60 in around 9 seconds is pretty good. Economy cars of the past were once lucky to get 12 seconds 0-60. Try a comparison test of this Rio with the original to see how far they’ve come. The Rio he test reminds me of the early VW Golf cars in the exterior. Today’s Golf cars have grown in size dwarfing those early models.

I would get a side job and find a couple thousand more and get a Kia Soul or move up to a Honda Civic, Subaru Impreza or base Camry LE or Altima. If I just had to buy a subcompact, no choice, I do appreciate that the Rio has a 6-speed automatic, seems to drive decent in the video, but I would prefer a Hyundai Elantra or Honda Fit.

We gas prices average under $2 per gallon, then we can use terms like “consistently low”. When $10 becomes adequate gas money again, then we can talk about how “low” gas prices are. But as of now, it still costs about $45 to fill up my Camry SE from empty...and that’s with me going to Costco gas.

It is interesting to hear complaints about this 1,6 liter engine in a small light car. Pretty much only the US market gets this engine as standard. In Europe the standard engine for the Rio is a 1,25 liter NA 4-cylinder with 87 hp, and optionally for this new one you can have a 1,0 liter 3-cylinder turbo with 100 hp or 120 hp. And its not like, traffic is slower in Europe than USA. And yet in Europe people do just fine with 87 hp in their Rio, mostly equipped with a manual transmission.

As always, great review. My local Kia dealer started getting some of these in stock, and I can't wait to conduct a review of one!
Also, I agree with you. The new start-up noise sounds a lot more pleasant over the previous generation (which sort of sounded like a tractor)...
All jokes aside, the new 2018 Rio seems to still be a pretty solid choice in the sub-compact class. Despite the more conservative and "straight line" design that is features.

I'm a huge auto enthusiast cars aren't selling so this redesign makes sense in this class. Auto makers are spending money on SUVs and truck. Mentioning what the car is missing or what options aren't available at this price point seems "weak".

BoostedCars 73 Probably costs them about 10K to manufacture these vehicles as far as parts and labor is concerned.
However, (1)Kia needs to make a profit, (2)"uncle Sam" wants his cut, (3)the dealerships need to pay their bills, pay their employees who wash and take care of these vehicles, and make a profit as well, and last but not least, (4)the salesman needs to make their commission in order to survive.
By the time you purchase the vehicle, you as a consumer ends up paying for everyone else's tab.
It's called business and everyone is only in it to make a buck. If they lower their profits, you'll be cutting into their budgets. You get what you pay for.

btw the manual feels way better, you should try it.

If you have Android auto, you have the option to use Google maps or Waze. You just need to download Waze app on your phone to be able to see it on your infotainment screen as an option to Google maps. I use it all the time in my 2017 Hyundai sonata sport. Great app if you want to get ahead of traffic, accidents, police traps and others reportable hazards on the road. It's kinda you see something, say( report ) something on the Waze community. I love it.

It HAD projectors and now it DOESN'T? A recent test just came out about car lighting and many didn't pass, why go down when your already up in an area of safety?
The car really doesn't seem to be a penalty box, does what it's supposed to do, get you from point A to B.

well, just have in mind that it is designed by europeans to be sold in europe (brother of huyndai i20, not accent). this explains its design (interior & exterior). since most people buy VWs in europe (which have boring design), all companies just try to copy them, to sale more cars. as for the engine, here it is sold with an 1.0 lt turbo (100+120 hp) and mostly 1.4 diesel, which would be interesting if you could review them (as you are used to driving more powerfull engines).

I'm honestly disappointed because new Kias are usually so stylish and have a lot of good tech and feel premium and this doesn't unlike the last Rio. At least the Accent is still premium and stylish looking.

This is really weird. In some countries people get this very basic rio as the top of the line. For example in Mexico and Latin America we get
18” inch wheels with sunroof , heated seats and heated steering wheel as well as 6mt or 6at. LED moving headlights and rear LED too. Cruise speed, blind spot, Apple car play and android auto. 6 airbags.

I think the conservative look is attractive, especially the wheels with the larger sidewall 15" wheels. There's really nothing wrong with conservative so long as it is done RIGHT. If it brings pricing down then that's even better.

Not sure why you keep downplaying the design. I thought it was a big step in the right direction. Provide a design that speaks to its purpose/ what it is... not what it wants to be. And it definitely takes cues from VW and Audi who famously aim at subtle and simple conpact designs that underplay the car's performance abilities. Well done Kia.
