i'm afraid the bo staff is mostly for aesthetics and training general body awareness and some flexibility, for actual combat or self defence you must be extremely confident with it, and be trained for years, or else your opponent will easily grab it and pull it out of your hands. For actual combat you must be trained in using your body only as well, for the matter if someone removes your bo staff, or you loose your momentum. Cause if your opponent got a bo staff too, he'll just try to interrupt your twists and turns by throwing his staff in between, and then you'll lack the rhythm. If you really want to get good at it I recommend learning the basics and come up with your own choreographies, instead of following other people's choreos. In this way, you learn to actually "escape" a stance, or what move can follow best in a genuine way, rather than following strictly choreos and you will not have the flexibility once this choreo is being interrupted by an opponent. This way your relationship with the staff will be much more sufficient. Don't be discouraged, there are several other good benefits from bo staffing, mostly getting out there and doing something with your body, for health, also it lets you forget the world for a while which is good for mental health, hoping you'll never actually get into a situation where you would have to fight with it.
