went down this rabbit hole about a year ago. landed on the BC183 myself. much more affordable but even in the one to one with the NKT in practical contexts (recording/gigging) I found the stability of the silicon to be much more worth it. as nice as the nkt can sound they change wildly in tone depending on environment, pick ups, amps, temperature, and type of battery as well as how much life the battery has. mike makes amazing pedals but the BC183 is definitely the go to for the cork sniffers out there and players alike.
I finally got the 183 in the mail a couple weeks back. As soon as I plugged it in I knew I made a great choice. It does exactly what I wanted to. Really great sounding pedal. Thank you for affirming my decision lol.
@blee3621 If you include the Hitachi 2SB77, which is low gain like the Matsushita 2SB171, you could be down as low as 33%. Given the gain and the characteristic darkness of the Matsushitas I would guess it is built with 2SB175 transistors.
what silicon transitor do you use in your Pedal Pawn Fuzz? I recently got your Pedal Pawn Germanium CV7003 pedal and i love it, didnt sound dar off from the NKT you guys liked of Analogmans Fuzz, so why spend $1k
Yes to Better than Zero I grabbed one if those recently The CV was used in the Fuzz Phrase from Jam pedals as well as some older Analogman and original FF circuits I really like that transistor it seems to clean up very well I don't care for blown out spitting fuzz tones Enjoy
Even as the owner of an NKT275, the 2SB might be the pick of the bunch for me. I wonder about the bias setting on each one though - the 275 has the external knob but the rest are internal? That could be the tweak to get the gains/tones closer? Shout out to the 183 too, that might be the Silicon FF I need!
This was my thought too. The 275 has external sun dial bias knob, it'd be useful if you could perhaps revisit and see if you can tweak the bias and internal trim pots to bring them much more similar, especially on the red dot as that could account for the large difference
I don’t own a SunFace, but I do own a Pedal Pawn Fuzz (👍🏻), Dunlops, Fulltones (69), friend-built germanium fuzz, and others. It was cool to hear the different transistors (and circuits?). I’ll have to watch again. On first listen, the NKT was my favorite. The clean up on the others seemed spiky or a bit too sizzly.
Hey guy's for future reference the rolled off tones should be demonstrated with some fluttery rythms ala Jimi instead of blues picking straight on Thanks just my 2 cents......2SB for the win
You need to have the fuzz knobs turned up to full (especially the germanium units)....the silicon ones have more gain and with them you could roll back the fuzz a little ...But the germanium ones need to be at full fuzz
Why didn't you run them with the gain maxed out? Then use guitar volume to get the desired amount of cleanup. Edit: Oh, you wanted the cleanup on the Silicon transistors so less gain.
I was dumb and let go a high gain nkt red dot🥺(also a Space Face Navigator😫)Agreed that germanium should have the fuzz maxed for it to be “cooking with gas!” Worst was selling a Spaceman Rumblefuzz🤬)
Amazing topic for a video. I love the NKT red dot but Pedal Pawn has made me re-think using silicon transistors since the transistors you guys use in your Fuzz abs Twang sound so good and are amazingly consistent. The Fuzz and the Twang together are my favorite as I love a good treble booster mixed with a glassy fuzz tone. Great to see you guys growing and putting out more content. Whenever anyone asked me what fuzz I should buy, I suggest yours. I love Analogman, they are made 40 min from my home and I’ve spent a lot of money buying them especially on the KOT and I loved all of them BUT you can buy some Pedal Pawn pedals and spend a lot less and get the same exact quality and tone. The Twang/Fuzz stack is one of the best in the game. Add the Vibe and you have the complete SRV/Hendrix tone stack minus the Octavia which I’m hoping will be coming out in the near future! ✌🏼 🎸

So how's it after 6 months? I just ordered one today
108s and 183s always sounded the best to me
Which 2SB was it though? They offer the 171, 175 and 77 on their site...
Great comparison fun!
They sound great but a fuzz in my opinion should be one of the cheapest pedals to purchase.
Is it a 2SB171 or 2SB175?
I would guess the 175 given the level of gain but there’s a 50% chance I am wrong.

Yes I just recently got one Great pedal
Thanks so much, we use similar NTE transistors to the ones in my fav old Cesar Diaz Texas Square Face in our regular silicon model 🤗🎛

I am still going to start with the Sun Lion. Everyone has their own ideas. 🤘
2sb sounds great but the nkt 275 is a beast

Loved the darkness of the 2SB. Sounded more unique than the others, but still mad money. I'll put it on my list to Santa.
Just order one direct!
I love my bc183 and my nkt red
I have the 108, quite nice. I went with it because I really like the MXR 108 fuzz.
The nkt red dot sounded the best to me lol.
Love the 183…except for the cleanup.
2SB and NKT red dot sounds the best for me but I prefer 2SB over NKT
2SB sounds cool. But honestly the differences are that crazy. They’re all within my margin of not caring. I’d say bc108 or 2SB are fine for me
2sb sounds nice

I liked 2SB
More volume?

Is the 2sb a 171 low gain or 175 high gain? Thanks.

Yeah the field was clearly tilted to favor the Si fuzz.
Went down a Sunface wormhole cause of this video!
Great video, as always!!!💥👌
Best regards from Austria!
That 2SB is ANGRY - me likey. I think I’d prefer it with its ability to explode and use my volume knob for the rest.
Why didn't you run them with the gain maxed out? Then use guitar volume to get the desired amount of cleanup.
Edit: Oh, you wanted the cleanup on the Silicon transistors so less gain.
Conclusion, fuzz is awesome 😂
Solo a ustedes se les ocurre probar un pedal metiendole reverb

I’ve got the NKT red dot.. got it for £200 a few years back. Good investment but to be honest I never use it. Should just sell the fella.

Thank you so much Jordan, that really means the world honestly ❤️🎛
Wayyyy too much reverb to make a useful call. 🤦♂️
I almost got a sunburn there.....
Yup..
The sounds so garbled I can't understand what you're saying with the accent. Sorry
