I remember wearing footed pajamas and watching tv all day long. I had a blanket and pillow on the sofa because mom quarantined my brother and sister in the bedroom we three usually shared. I probably didn’t bathe in a week. My mom opened cans of vegetables I ate cold or canned fruit. The rest I got for myself such as bread and butter or crackers. It all seemed so surreal.

And in 1916, according to a death record in Detroit, my would be great-great grandfather died from the Flu. When I looked it up, the record written in 1916, was the same symptoms as the coronavirus-19. Meaning, more than likely, he did die from the Spanish Flu and it started earlier than we thought .

John Barry's book is a must-read in my opinion. It's worth noting here that the 1918 flu was unusual; most diseases target the young and the old, those with undeveloped or weakened immune systems; the 1918 flu mostly spared those segments of the population but caused massive immune system over-reactions in healthy adults in the prime of life, and they basically drowned in their own fluids.
So far, the Corona virus seems to target mostly the elderly and infirm, For many people the systems are quite mild, sometimes going almost completely unnoticed. Those people are carriers, who can easily spread the virus without even knowing it. The long incubation period, possibly greater than 2 weeks, makes the spread of the disease much more likely. We had better hope that it doesn't mutate into a more lethal strain.
Meanwhile, let's look at it this way. The population of the US is about 330 million. If 1 in 100 Americans gets the Corona virus, that's 3.3 million people, many of whom, *if* they have symptoms, will end up missing work and probably keeping the kids home from school. A ( conservative) mortality rate of 1% means that 33 thousand people could die, and before they expire they'll be overloading the hospitals, and then the morgues, funeral homes, and crematoriums. Families will take time out from work and school to care for and finally bury their relatives;, travel plans and vacation reservations will plummet; and consumer spending would sharply decrease. The hit to the US economy, and the world economy, would be almost incalculable ( Italy forecasts a 6 billion dollar loss). Try to Imagine the social upheaval of burying all those loved ones !

With only 220,000 deaths due to the epidemic the UK got off fairly lightly. As with all infections of this type the areas with high population densities suffered the most so it would depend on where in Scotland and Canada they were living. Also with the war to fight the UK government didn't do enough and there was a press blackout over it.

Those who are the most vulnerable to dying from it are the elderly and those with health issues. You know, expensive people. Will health insurance stocks become more profitable? Will social security be less burdened? For those who believe it's stupid to think this may have been an intentional release, don't forget about smallpox in blankets.
