Lmao did you really say “everyone helped each other out without regard for race creed, etc” ? Did you say that to wash your white guilt about racism in the past? Sir, I guarantee I can find primary sources where minorities were treated much more harshly due to the pandemic.
What a great series! My great uncle told me stories of the 1918 flu, how healthy young men left for work in the morning and were near death that same night, their lungs flooded with fluid. My uncle was infected, and the hospitals of the day in New York City were completely overwhelmed. So lacking were beds that it was customary to put clearly dying patients out on the hospital's fire escapes (in the dead of winter) to free up their beds. My uncle said that one morning he awoke on a fire escape, and began banging on the window to be let back in. He was a fighter, my Uncle Pete.
Wonderful lecture. He died 1-3-20 at age 69 of a heart attack. If you notice he had only one functional arm. So sad.

The doctor making this video passed in early January? But he said he had to miss Mardi Gras this year, as if Mardi Gras was over by the time this aired. Not that he "would miss it". I will have to double check what he said and or check that out online. Interesting. Sad if true since 69 is young nowadays.
If u scroll down, another person asked about this Doctor and TGC replied back with his resume and first sentence says he "is" xyz not "was" nothing about a heart attack except from someone else replied before TGC that he passed 1/3/20 of a heart attack. So im assuming TGC is accurate and good news that he didn't pass and hopefully he can still continue to help with current event.
Current policy makers should be required to view this information, many of the same mistakes that were made back then are being made today.

they never do. political scientist's jobs as advisors are relatively easy since they say the same crap their predecessors said as the politicians rarely ever acknowledge it. but when something goes wrong the advisors are first to be kicked. All these media and politicians are moaning about finding out where it came from and accountability for that, but no one is asking the real question: How did it spread so fast and why did no one give a crap. We KNEW their was a breakout but we just shrugged our shoulders and went "it's a Wuhan virus"
Government types tend to leave issues to the future. For example Climate change, an inevitable occurrence that will EVENTUALLY lead to a change in how and where we grow crops, how and where animals travel, the eventual melting of the ice caps (as technically we are still in the death throes of the last ice age) Instead of making concrete plans they're leaving into the side, claiming "it's an issue" but not doing anything. they keep talking about preventive measures, but it's not something preventable, it's like stopping the world from spinning, or stopping the Polar Reversal from happening (100+ times in the span of 70million years so negligible but still possible) which would weaken the magnetic field protecting us from radiation from our sun and other celestial bodies. They do not do anything until the water reaches their feet.
Even if you make them required to see videos and these things, it'll go in one ear and out the other. As they'll be more worried about their next term or whatever garbage floats in their heads.
Anyone whining today about their poor mental health and how tough lockdowns are should be made to watch this. My town lost 7.4% of it's 10,000 population. A trip to your local cemetery that has 1918 burials will show you how badly it hit.
You said that one of the soldiers would scream whenever he was touched. I went through this when I was a kid. Nearly died and the specialists at the hospital had no idea what was wrong with me. Eventually I recovered and they determined that I'd picked up some type of flu.

Interesting and riveting and fascinating discussion on the Spanish Flu of 1918, remember as a younger person hearing about it and always wondered why it's forgotten history, barely mention, yet it impacted so many people, a true pandemic.

Yes as a person living in Philadelphia I wish our citizens would watch this video and take it as a warning. With the population nearly tripled that of 1918 i fear we’re right behind New York as a major hot spot. Unfortunately only probably half of our citizens are taking this seriously 😐. Either way the whole country reacted too late to the early warnings.
I wish we had more masques and that it be mandatory to wear before you exit your home. But what can we do. 😷😷😞.

Dr. Bruce E. Fleury is Professor of the Practice in the Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology at Tulane University. He earned a B.A. from the University of Rochester in Psychology and General Science, and an M.A. in Library, Media, and Information Studies from the University of South Florida. His career as a college reference librarian led him to Tulane University, where he became head of the university library's Science and Engineering Division. He went on to earn an M.S. and a Ph.D. in Biology, both from Tulane. Professor Fleury is the author of numerous articles and newspaper columns, both popular and professional, and a reference book on dinosaurs. He teaches between 600 and 700 students a year, and his courses include ornithology, introductory general biology and environmental biology, the history of life, and evolution in human health and disease. His teaching awards include two awards for outstanding teaching from the Tulane chapter of the Mortar Board National College Senior Honor Society and a Mortar Board 'Last Lecture' Award, in which favorite professors are invited to give a lecture as if it were their last. My grandmother lived in Philadelphia during this time, I remember her telling about bodies loaded on wagons and the quarantines marked on family front doors.
But of course she and survivors like her are lying or are part of the "hoax" that the Q-heads are so fond of.
The treatment that did work was a simple diet, hot and cold treatments, and good nursing. Unbelievable that this was not implemented everywhere at the time. Dr. John Harvey Kellogg was well-known and didn't die until the 1940s. His protocol was followed at the seminary in Hutchinson, MN with not one death after 90 were infected. It makes us wonder about medicine and virology. Here we are 100 years later and still seem clueless about what to do.

Obviously a different disease so hard to extrapolate, however for COVID-19 in New Zealand and Australia we have seen very good results from early border closures and early lockdown coupled with extensive testing and contact tracing.

I attended a large catholic high school on the outskirts of Philadelphia, Archbishop Prendergast. It became a school in the 1950’s, but it opened in 1920 as an orphanage.

I just hope that we learn from these “experiences” and take anti-viral measures more seriously from now on.
Although COVID-19 must be reported I think the real number of infected people will never be known, but rather assumed. It would be of tremendous value to evaluate the number of immune people throughout the globe once the pandemic is controlled, but I don’t believe it will be feasible. the economic crisis associated with this will not permit it. Lots could be learned by knowing the real numbers: places where the vírus hit more, reasons for it to be more virulent in some places than others, etc. History and present analysis can help us be more prepared for the future.

Hello to the awesome Prof. I was listening to the death toll in your lecture but didn't hear of any African countries or cities being mentioned. There are some articles that talk about West Africa and South Africa having the flu too and with casualties as well. I would love to hear the stories of the African tribes or early cities and how they responded as well since none of this is documented in detail in books in our libraries today. I think it would be interesting to hear it from a real scholar like you if there is actually good information on this subject. Thanks

No he said that Philadelphia didn't do any better closing things down by the time they did than other cities who didn't close at all. Cities that implemented measures early on faired much better. Listen to all he says not just the snippet that confirms a bias
In March when COVID-19 "spikes" the first thing the Feds did is , "confiscate " the disposable Mask and gloves from where I worked😡 I'm an essential worker and got all the Symptoms and at the 5th day having difficulty breathing . I continued to work waiting for my Dr's appointment , after work I am coughing none stop to the point will have chest pain😂. I got to my appointment and my Dr. Told me I have pneumonia 😂 she prescribe 4 days of Antibiotic and I recovered, after that appointment I have learned to make my own mask while waiting for the mask I've ordered on line that took almost 2 months😂😂😂 I'm still "Mad" at the Feds when they say" we confiscated the essential mask and gloves for us Federal people😡 I thank my Dr.'s decision ❤️ I've tested 2 for COVID and the result is negative 🙏 I'm old still working and very afraid about this Pandemic 💔 there's about 13,000+ victims in the county were we live💔 take care everybody ✌️❤️

@@joemartin1253 the current virus is tempered somewhat by our rapid global communication, better education, coordinated efforts, and improved medical care. However, while it may not be pound for pound as deadly as the 1918 flu, if left to its own devices, it would be so much deadlier than it is now. And we are still in the midst of it not knowing where it might end up. It could very well be we are simply plugging up holes in a dam with our fingers, and if we're not careful, we will run out of fingers.

So many parallels with COVID 19. Yet currently the infection and mortality rates are much lower. Let us hope this will continue as we all move out of quarantine. It is impossible to remain in lockdown permanently. This would be even worse. It seems we must now learn to modify our lives and live ( or die) with the virus. It is impossible to eradicate it.

@@SI-ln6tc No, it's not his looks, it's the gait and physical attitude. My brother had scholiosis which prevented him from turning his head on his neck so he had to turn his shoulders to look off to the side; it got worse as he got older.

The world watched Wuhan burn, then Italy, Spain, and watched some more. Trump banned flights in and out of China and caught flack. At least he did SOMETHING. Canada is a farce. Our health minister first says dont wear masks, they dont help. The CDC says everyone must wear a mask, even a homemade one. Now Canada has changed its tune. Masks DO HELP NOW. You can tell these people weren't put on these jobs due to their stellar resumes. Trudeau must have half the government women " because its 2015"
@@susanauger3758 Those cheap dust, surgical and homemade masks won't stop the virus; at the least an N-95 mask is necessary. But it will keep droplets and spray out of the environment so it's kind of a "6 of one/half a dozen of the other" helpmeets.
With over 3000 souls a day dying what historians will say is that virtually no one has learned anything or willing to follow scientific advice on how to mitigate this terrible disease!!!

Chilling that this lecture came out just before the next global pandemic hit.
His obituary says he died of a heart attack on 1/8/2020 but with the conflicting numbers of coronavirus deaths being reported, could it be coronavirus that actually killed him?
Also, interesting that a number of microbiologists and virologists have died just years prior to the coronavirus pandemic.
