    Great video! I just came across your channel and I am also pretty deep into slot car drag racing and have been for the past 5 years or so. I scoured your channel looking for similar videos to this one but didn’t see any, would love to see more content like this!

    I once owned a 1969 Charger. It was gold with gold interior with bucket seats, center conncel. It had the 383, automatic 123 transmission.. pop up lights. The speedometer read 160mph. This car was beautiful and ran like a beast.

      Did you have a chance to test thee 160mph? My wife's uncle had a 68 RT 440 back I the day. He drove it like it was the general lee. I remember him telling me he did so many burn outs with it that after one high speed run coming back down to speed limit all the wheel studs broke off at once!

      I got going up tp 135, got scared.. that's really fast, shut it down. The white road stripe looked like one continues white line at that speed. Cool story. I hope he was at a stop when the wheel studs broke off. I guess he was, because he lived to tell the story. lol@@dadstoygarage1878

    I love slot cars, I'm 50 years old and I've been racing them since I was 8, and I'm sure that you're proud of your work and for the most part you have some good content but I just have to say it, I don't know who taught you to paint but I'm sure they didn't teach you to paint that way. Using an automotive spray gun to paint something as small as a model is complete over kill and honestly you can't get the quality finish that you should be trying for!

    • @dadstoygarage1878
      @dadstoygarage1878  Год назад +1

      Im not sure what you are getting at but I have painted all my model car bodies with an automotive paint gun and automotive base - clear coat. I have an air brush but I prefer the feel of the paint gun in my hand. My Day job is an automotive painter and was trained by my father who went to school to paint cars professionally. I find that I can lay down a really glassy clear coat on the model. It's a one coat done type situation when it comes to the clear coat on a model kit. I understand it may seem like over kill but this is the way I like to do it. When I was a kid my dad took each of my models to his work place and sprayed them for me. It was a great father son situation. If you are worried I am loosing detail in putting the paint on too heavy with an automotive gun and base clear it actually flows out nicely over all the fine details the way I apply the clear coat. What I really am excited about is I can bring the paint code of the actual colour to my paint rep and he can get me the actual colour. like this charger for example is the correct plum crazy for a 1968 charger.

    I would love to know where you got the rat truck from in the back ground. That's what I have been looking for.

    • @dadstoygarage1878

      It's my daughters truck that we built together. Chassis is the same set up as the charger. Its honestly more fun to do a patina model than a nice shiny one.
      To patina it I first made the rust holes by grinding the body thin from behind in places where I wanted the holes to be. Then I took a sewing needle and poked through. The next step was to deform the body which is done carefully by applying heat from a heat gun. while the plastic is soft use your finger/finger nail to simulate damage.
      Then comes the fun of paint. all the paint is craft paint which can be thinned with water to spray with an air brush and it also dries dull which is perfect. I am a little foggy on the process but it went something like this: I bought colours that were close to the various shades of rust. the darkest brown is first sprayed than a lighter brown followed by something like a light orange. after the paint drys I used the salt method. which uses table salt and water. You want to put the salt on in places that you want it to look like rust chipping etc. so with a Q tip dab water in those places and sprinkle salt on. when it dries paint the top coat (in this case blue). After top coat is dry rub off the salt. the final step is wet sanding with about 1500-2000 grit sand paper strategically to simulate more weathering.

      Thank you! I have played with an air brush a bit. I find doing something like a patina build where I use craft/hobby paint it works very well.
      I am just a lot more comfortable using the automotive paint gun as I paint for a living. The automotive paint allows me to spray the actual colour that would be on the real cars. My paint rep can get the base coat in small mixtures as well. I like to finish on the models with the automotive clear coat for 2 reasons: 1) I can get a glassy smooth finish out of it with out sanding and buffing. 2) On slot cars they get handled a lot and the automotive paint is pretty durable. That being said The automotive gun allows me to proper atomize the automotive clear coat. I also usually have a few model cars I am painting at one time and probably done full size car parts, so I can mix enough clear to get it done all at the same time. Thanks for watching the video!

    I do 10th scale indoor carpet oval and road course racing which is amazing and fun with the RC cars but I wish I could get into slot car drag racing the 124 scale or even road course racing or oval racing cuz you can build some amazing looking cars using model kits so that way I can take two hobbies model building and slot car racing all in one and build some super scale looking drag cars and race cars

      @@dadstoygarage1878 since there is no 1/24 scale slot car racing anywhere with in a 10 hour drive Im in the process of building me a 4 wide true scale 1/4 mile reica of ZMAX dragway in Concord "Charlotte" north Carolina where they do the 4 wide nationals. I have a customs wall paper made since the track will be mounted up against a wall and fold up and down to save room will be a photo realistic print of the stands and background long side the right side of the track and I'm 3d printing the media and scoring and announcer tower and all the buildings and ECT that sit behind the starting and staging lines and of course it will go over the entrance like the real track and it will have a option where I can run 4 cars all at once by myself with the push of a single button or hook ups where 4 ppl can run against each other on a controller or I can run 3 cars by them self using coding and I use a controller to run my car basically against the computer like a video game and gonna program where the cars make mistakes like a real person like hesitant on the starts or it can give it a little more power and spin tires off the line so that way I can race against 3 cars by my self it's gonna be so cool and not gonna costjch to build cuse electronics are super cheap and its all gonna be ran by a raspberry pie

      Automotive Base/Clear. The charger paint is actual Plum Crazy that is on the real car. I am using Matrix base and clear coat spayed from my SATA HVLP Gravity fed gun. Same one I painted my full size car with. If you do multiple colours of base make sure to clean with a plastic cleaner that won't melt the plastic. I am using an automotive plastic adhesion promoter made by AXALTA.
