I meme I've seen recently on FB was "I didn't ask how big the room is, I said cast fireball!" You need to do a t-shirt of that with Nixie, I'm ready to buy it RIGHT NOW.
The real question is who was the first person who tried mixing some of these, let alone survived gathering Bugbear boogars. I can't imagine a Bugbear just let some random person walk up and pick it's nose and not try to murder it.

Spell components in D&D were originally an inside joke, but nobody got it. Why do you need guano and sulphur to cast fireball? Because you add charcoal and you have made a fairly common explosive (gunpoweder).

As a fun fact: bat guano was a common source of Nitrates in the late renaissance and early industrial era, which is an essential component for producing saltpeter and thus gunpowder.
And thats why most casters tend to be more into spell focuses... as the component bag effectively means your caster is likely walking around smelling absolutely horrid
Well if you're a boring caster at least😉 explaining how a character uses it's components makes for a fun narrative during casting instead of "my focus glows with a arcane light"

The hard parts about casting that spell is removing the jellyfish net and crabby patty from it's hands as well as the scream of terror it lets out when the spell is cast and the sponge is consumed by the casting. =(

You're thinking of modern times when sponge are made of synthetic material and available in any store. In medieval times, a sponge is a sea animal that needs to be harvested. Unless you live by a sea where sponges proliferate, bat guano is much easier to obtain.

In the game idle champions, if you look at Nixie's profile, you can see that she creates fireballs with the help of an amulet in the first place, and the components are there as an addition. And the first two cells are some kind of mushrooms and not shitty bats and sulfur.

Fun timing... I sighed more than a few times that I do not find the ingedrients for some alchemy stuff in Baldurs Gate 3. Then again there is no difficulty and my group is so overpowered we could go through the game naked and win. 😼
I guess that depends on the d&d edition and on the DM. Some are anal about components, others forget about it completely... Tbf, the DM probably can't really keep track of all the components in a party with e.g. 4 casters, and even less so, if they are consumable. Except perhaps more expensive stuff like diamond dust.

If i run a game, you can also substitude black powder for your usual fireball components. Ofcourse there are certain risks involved, and it tends to leave traces of soot. But it will kill your enemies and allies alike, just fine.

I assume it's because guano is extremely high in nitrogen and phosphorus. It makes it a great fertilizer, but also both those things are extremely flammable. Bird poop would probably work, but most kinds of poop would not.
No, because it isn't the poop that does it. It is the urine. And before you ask if cat urine would work... Yes, but you need to train your cat to pee on a haystack lol. It would be easier (and more historically accurate) to simple use your own.

Whats even stranger is unless specified they are no consumed on cast. And fire ball doesn't say it does......it gets weird

No one tell Nixie Fireball, as most spells, doesn't consume the ingredients. You just need to have them, or a class-specific arcane focus

The rate those things go through batteries is crazy. It's like printer ink cartridges. The wand is practically free but they get you on the recharges.
