The great Al Grey. Have an LP cover signed by him after a session back in the late seventies.

Basie was a very good pianist, at the level of any other soloist, but his spare and essential style prevailed.

Listen carefully to the sound quality of this recording 50 years ago.! Compare with other supposed quality utube offerings. The BBC technicians are only equaled by the German and Japanese technicians, but they get very little credit .
I wonder if the same genius that has transcribed some of the fantastic solos of Tatum has ever written out some of the Basie solos to sheet music. My mind boggles at this capability for Tatum's improvisation. Only by my seeing the notes that I have been truly appreciative of the skill of Tatum music. Arthur Rubinstein once said that he marveled at the key playing accuracy of the jazz pianist or words to that effect.

Catch the first name mentioned in the list of musicians and you will see Wallace Davenport. Wallace played trumpet in a 5-piece combo at a Dixieland jazz bar on Bourbon Street called Crazy Shirleys in the early '80s, and man was he good. I also found a New Orleans-themed CD with him playing with Earl Fatha Hines. Good to see his name again.

    Absolutely wonderful ❤
The title of this masterpiece has always baffled me grammatically 😂

@@juubtrb6182 as far as the meaning goes, I believe that he “needs to get some” bee’d is from the birds and bees. That’s my interpretation. I’ve just never got grammatically over the “I needs”, I mean why’s the third person singular with I? 🙃

One thumb up isn’t enough for what I hear but what I see is very disappointing. You can’t mess with formats.
This should be 4:3 not 16:9
So I can’t but give no thumbs
