Pentel Aquash Water Brush Pen Review

- Hey you!
I thought that the time was ripe for me to sit down and review some of my most used art and journaling supplies. And of course, I had to start with the Pentel Aquash Water Brush Pens! These brush pens draw so many questions from my readers and subscribers alike, so I thought I would break down what they are, what they can do, and why they are some of my favorites.
One of the reasons that the Pentel Aquash Water Brush Pens are some of my most-grabbed pens is because they directly helped me get back into art. A huge barrier for my art was fear - specifically, fear of not making something "worthy". I got it in my head that EVERY time I sat down to paint had to result in something amazing.
This anxiety was only compounded by the huge spread of materials I needed to set up and tear down every time I painted. Watercolor paper, paints, water glasses, paper towels, paint brushes, etc...
But when I got my hands on the Pentel Aquash Water Brush Pens, I realized that it didn't have to be so complicated. These water brushes allowed me to paint with half of the supplies and half of the pressure, making it a million times easier to just create. Now, I'm more into art than I have been in seven years - and I can thank the Aquash Water Brush Pens.

Really nice to see a review when a person actually used it for a quite while (a year!) so you can be pretty sure about leaks, quality and stuff. Was very useful, thank you!
Thank you Enne! I'm glad you found the review helpful!
Doing some research on painting with watercolor and saw someone in a video using these and it looked amazing! Your review was absolutely perfect! Very knowledgeable and really helped me see what the heck these are and maybe how I can use them! I'm very tempted for sure. So thank you!
Yay! I'm so glad you found this helpful, thank you for your kind comment!
@@Foxsy_Official absolutely! It can be hard delving into new mediums and trying to understand all the tools people use. So reviews like yours are fantastic to help us understand! Keep up the good work :)
I am a big fan of Pentel water brushes, I have tried a few other brands and these are by far the best performing and easiest to use. A few tricks I have learnt with these are to hold the brush pen in a extended tripod grip, with index and middle fingers straight and my thumb on the flat side of the bulb. A little pressure with the thumb provides a steady flow when filling larger areas. A second tip to provide extra flow is to briefly squeeze across the wide section of the bulb, before you start to paint, while holding the brush pointing down. You will feel and see air bubbles rising from the valve, this provides a little positive pressure to the feed when painting large areas like sky. A useful accessory I have acquired for use with these brushes is a small dropper bottle I was able to salvage, that I carry with me to refill my water brushes. I think it was from some hair colorant product of my GF and they are about 100ml capacity with a narrow fine tip spout and a screw on cap. They are real easy to carry and it enables me to refill my brushes or rinse my palette when on sketching trips outdoors.
Thank you for these tips, Peter! I also keep a little eyedropper around for the same reason. It's a convenient way to refill your brushes for sure.
Getting a lot of new art supplies and decided to try this out, I ordered them and can't wait for them to arrive, but I wanted to make sure I knew what I was getting so this was really helpful. Thank you!
I'm so glad it was helpful to you! I'm sure you'll have a ton of fun with all your new art supplies!
@@Foxsy_Official ^^
I just purchased these yesterday, this was really helpful , thanks 😘
I'm so glad it was helpful!
Thank you, I ordered a pack, can’t wait to try them.
I'd love to know what you think of them Caroline!
Totally useful for me.... I never used this brush, but wanna try it soon :) Have a great day!
These are my go-to water brush pens! Enjoy :)
Thank you for reviewing these water brush pens. I am pleased to know they come in a package of three.
Thanks for watching Abbie!
this was very helpful! thank you.
I would love to see you review travel brushes! Things like the Escoda travel brushes and such!
I will keep that in mind 😊
I jusr bought a set and used them before I saw this video. To this tutorial is timely and helpful. I love these things already!
Thanks for watching Angela! I love them too!
TFS 🤗 I have often wondered the variation between the sizes, how well these work, portability ect of the brush pens. Could you do a review on maybe 2- 3 travel type watercolor sets that are reasonably priced & good for a beginner? Thank you so very much!!
Glad this was helpful! Thank you for the suggestion - I will definitely think on that one.
Here is one that I would recommend: amzn.to/2pJSxZu
LittleCoffeeFox Thank you for the response. I have actually looked at getting the same set🤗
This was a very useful tutorial! I picked up some tips and tricks!
Glad to hear it was helpful Blakeley!
Great video, do you have an update with the new flat end?😅
I'm afraid I don't yet, sorry!
been a while hi LCF! thanx for tutorial, off on holiday end of may somewhere in greece and this has helped me out a lot. Many thanx :)
Thanks for watching! Great to see you again :)
I got the 2 pack. Using them with watercolor pencils!!
That's a great use for these!
@@Foxsy_Official Actually I got the three pack. Comes today.
We’ll done. Thanks!
❤️❤️❤️
I can't wait to paint something now!
Yay!!
So helpful! I have a couple of those brush's and I wasn't sure how to use them and have just been experimenting, but this is (even though it is a review) super helpful!! Thank you!
Could you review the regular brushes that you use in your planning videos? I've wanted to try getting regular water color brushes and keep my Pentel's in a case to take everywhere with me and try out regular brushes
I'm happy to hear it was helpful Alexa. I will keep that in mind for future videos for sure!
Does this brand have good water control? A lot of water brushes leak out too much water while you're painting. I've heard that ones with a rigid barrel don't have this problem.
@irene1234 this brand does pretty dang good! The only caveat is the smallest brush. For two different sets, the smallest brush is a little leaky while you're using it.
i wonder if you can make a video on choosing the right brand and what should it look like and the performance of the waterbrush pen. Because I'm having a hard time on choosing waterbrush pen since I don't know what or how shall I pick. Thanks for answering.
I have only ever tried the Pentel Aquashes, so I can't really comment on other brands of water brushes! If I try other brands, I'm sure I will discuss the differences in a post. Sorry I can't help more!
Hello There I have some Aqua pen brushes, I must admit I have been procrastinating with mine, I have watch other aqua pen tutorials but none using Acrylics, could you do a future review using acrylics has your pigment
I'll keep it in mind, thanks for the suggestion!
Thanks for this video review. I’ve recently picked up one of these Aquash water brush. I need to get more!! Can you recommend a reasonably priced watercolour set for a beginner? Thanks
Let me find something for you Ina!
LittleCoffeeFox thank you Shelby!!!! It’s so hard to find stuff here in Australia that’s affordable. I think I’m US you get such a big range of products at all price points.
Here is one: amzn.to/2pJSxZu
im not sure if you will see this because it was posted 2 years ago. I want to buy one of these waterbrushes but I am not sure which one to buy because I will use one brush for both thin and thick lines. I wanted to ask what are your opinions about this?
Hey Buse! These water brush pens come in a 3 pack with small, medium, and large, so you should be covered if you buy this particular brand. However, if you buy another brand, I'd suggest you try medium before something else. It can be pretty precise and also give you pretty broad strokes, which will cover a lot of your needs. I hope that helps!
Hey!
Thank you so much for the review!
But dp you ever feel like there's not enough water in brush? I have tried a few cheap water brushes and hated them! But I've seen a lot of people talk very highly of the pentels so I think I'm going to try it, perhaps I'll end up liking water brushes for travel! But I'm still wondering if you ever feel like there's not enough water?
Great question! I've found that for the majority of my watercolor needs, the Aquash brushes have been just right. The only time I find that they aren't wet enough is when I'm laying down a clean water layer in preparation for a wet wash. Then I typically grab a big brush and a jar of water.
I hope that helps!
@@Foxsy_Official thanks so much for replying! And yes it was quite helpful! :D
I've got these brushes for some years now and 2 out of 3 leak. I'm not squeasing the tank but it drops of water still come out and ruin everything. Maybe this batch was crooked, but I'm searching for new ones, any recommendations?
Oof, I'm sorry your pens were busted! I'm afraid I don't have any other recommendations -- I've used this brand for years and it's all I've tried!
I have this brush.....but I am confused to use the water.can you tell me any tricks to use them...
There is a blog post here that should help: littlecoffeefox.com/watercolors-planner-water-brush-tutorial/
@@Foxsy_Official Thank you :)
Is there a backwash? I mean the pigments going back into the water?
Nope, I have never had the issue where pigment bleeds into the barrel!
What paper do you use?
I'm using Canson watercolor paper! I have a link in the bio if you want to see the specific product :)
If you don’t squeeze the barrel will the water still come out ?
No, you do have to squeeze it.
can you use acrylic paint instead of water colour
I suppose you could try, but you would have to be extremely diligent in cleaning your brushes before the paint dries so you don't ruin your brushes.
Is it ok for poster color?
I'm afraid I don't know what you mean! Could you elaborate?
@@Foxsy_Official People use this brush pen for watercolor. What about poster color? Those colors that avalaible in bottles like Buncho.
@@KamenRiderOtaru Oh! I'm afraid I personally have never tried, so I can't say for sure. However, I have seen people use these pens with India ink or fountain pen ink, and it works great with those mediums. I'm not sure if it's the same thing, but it's the closest I got!
LittleCoffeeFox gouache is called poster color in some parts of the world. I guess this brush can be used but water use will be more since gouache is opaque.
She actually starts using them on 3:21 the rest is info that's self explanatory. You're welcome.
Thank you :)
What happens if I put black ink instead of water?
I've seen people do that! It's a great way to create a refillable black brush pen. However, it will almost certainly stain the bristles and inner barrel, so you would have to clean it thoroughly before it could be used for anything else.
Too much talking. She actually demonstrates the usage at 1:46 for those interested.
