The Latics should have won the Div 3 championship a lot more convincingly, but 3 days after this game flopped at home against Charlton Athletic (in front of 19,000 fans), then had to get a point from the final game at Plymouth, which we did. As far as the football media were concerned, the only team that mattered in this division in 73-74 was Bristol Rovers, who were unbeaten until January. We were in 8th place in the New Year, having lost four consecutive games over the Christmas period, but were pretty much unstoppable from then on. We beat Rovers 2-1 at Eastville on Easter Saturday, which was effectively the result that secured the title. The game was on Match Of The Day - would be nice to see it posted here some day...
I was at this game aged 16 cheering on the Blues in the Spion Kop hoping they'd stay up on the last day of the season. Cracking goal by Kenny Burns in the days when he was a forward before Cloughie converted him back to a defender.
When he went to Man U as they were desperate, he must have thought what am I doing here? Wrong player, he was a penalty box striker & needs service. He can't replace Best. Relegation was the best thing in the end. Denis Law🦵.
@@seltaeb3302 Totally disagree . Its obvious why he went there . He was an old fashioned centre foreword . A great target man an excellent headerer of the ball and quick over 10 yards . Man u didn't suit his style but thats not his fault now is it. He proved at Norwich and Southampton he could score goals at the top level.
Try 134,000 at Hampden for the Scot v Eng Home Int. mid 70s. That's packed. That fixture every year was the biggest in the world period. No trouble, no one died. Did we win tho..
