- Rory comes from a long line of beggars and he's ready to break the cycle of poverty by working a minimum wage job in Whiterun. Can he make enough to afford a hot meal, a roof over his head, and (eventually) a family?

"Yes you can, just chop wood all day." There, now you don't have to comment that! ;)
Legend LOL I was gonna comment that as soon as I read that title
You could hunt and sell the skins and furs. Or make those items into armors and sell that stuff. Ingredients too like Salmon roe for the positions. I went normal mortal human for my character which meant no ho potions. Cure poison and cure disease as medicine was ok. I could make simple poisons as well. To recover HP you had to sleep or eat food. Weapons could only be the wood axe, very simple bow, pick axe and torch. The only axe and pick that can be upgraded in the original game are the poachers axe🪓 and the notched pickaxe⛏️ but, you have to find a way to level enchanting in order to do that. Enchanting breaks the normal human as in from earth which means no magic. The only reason to get either of the above weapon/tools is to upgrade them. A special torch that casts shadows exists in solstheime. Must unequip and equip it so as not to lose it. No armor to be worn only clothes. For some reason archery 🏹 will affect the torch damage. I've been told that enchanting in fire damage upgrades the torch along with block for the bash. Not sure if this is all true. I'll have to test some day.
*Dammit.*

I didn't think about it until I read your comment, and now I'm laughing. That is a great line.
You can make 300,000 gold per year by chopping wood. It pays about 150g per in-game hour. Chop wood, sell to Hulda, repeat. Work 2 hours (300g), sell and have an ale, work 2 more hours (300g), sell and have a lunch, two more hours, sell and have a mead, 2 more hours, sell and have dinner. Listen to the bards, rent the hotel room. Total, 1,200g minus the cost for meals and the room. A player would never want to do that, but your character might.
If you wanted to be as efficient as possible, that's definitely the way to do it. Roleplaying as a logger could be really fun, actually! Maybe in a more wooded area like Falkreath.
@@vikst.varlik726 I could see a story where the Dragonborn escapes from dying, comes across Riverwood, and says "Eh, fuck it" and settles down to work at the lumber mill lol

Same.
i love the idea of picking a fantasy adventure game with the purpose of living a mundane life, it's surprisingly fun to bring the mundane of real life into a game like this.
Dang, Rory out here doing better than most of us who DIDN'T come from generational poverty. True chad right here if there ever was one.
That's the secret! If you're already covered in crass and got dirty hands, getting your hands dirty doesn't scare you as much lol
Generational poverty is such a fucked up concept
Especially in the modern day
The fact that picking crops from a farm isn't stealing in skyrim is wild tbh, if the next Elder Scrolls game doesn't have a random even of a farmer pulling out a staff of shotgun and telling you to drop the crops and get off the property I'd be a little disappointed
You drop those spuds laddie an’ clear yerself off me land, sharpish! :)
Yeah I agree though; you should at least have to speak with the farmer about offering work picking crops before allowing you to harvest them without it counting as stealing.
Same should be done with active mines too I suppose; ‘active’ being the ‘cave’ ones with clearly defined boundaries and with obvious signs of ongoing industrial activity such as employees labouring in the mines, operating the smelter and so on; not the ones which have become tenanted by criminal bandit gangs or the long-abandoned ones lying deserted or populated by undead.
It doesn’t make sense that you can just go into a mine where any loose ore, ingots and some other misc items are owned and taking them is stealing, you can usually help yourself to their mining tools and mine the veins yourself and simply walk out with as much ore (that isn’t tagged as being stolen but actually _is_ in a realistic sense) as there is available or that you are able to carry.
Again I think one should be required to speak to the mine’s owner about available work before being allowed to freely do so.
@@ianjames1754 With the mines I feel like the game has no way to mark the ore vein as stolen, and thus the ore isn't either.
A bit like with potion making or smithing. You can use all stolen components, but the created potion or sword isn't stolen anymore. So in universe the people seem to be unable to track things once they are different. Imagine if you could just steal gold coins, melt them down, cast them back into coins and suddenly they are legitimately yours.

This was a surprisingly moving tale of hope, loss and loyalty. I was genuinely distraught for Rory as his dreams of courting and marrying Ysolda shattered, making his new home feel barren and meaningless. It really added emotional weight to the story's conclusion with a loving household in the safety of Whiterun for our non-adventurous hero. I wonder if there might be a follow-up episode, "Can You Adventure in Skyrim Without Killing Anyone?" in which Rory and Uthgerd go on various quests near enough to Whiterun to return home every night.

Another way I can think to explain, and what happens in the video is like a Tradwife (traditional wives) but just make her a dude. Yeah, that's how I do it if I need some money early game. And you can literally chop wood infinitely and Hulda pays the full price too.
Yeah it's legit broken how you can amass a fortune just from firewood sales.
@@kotor610But it's super tedious, which is the point. Yeah, it's free money, but also a time sink. There's a wood axe you can grab in Riverwood for free at any time. It assures that no matter what, you should always have access to *some* form of money.
0:11 "See that mountain? You can actually go there."
When you sell firewood to Hulda, the Argonian Ale no longer counts as stolen 🍻
And you get 10 G per swing! Man, that poor guy who has to just *give* his logs to Belethor because he *works* there
iirc she lets you stay a night at the inn for free as well. there's no dialogue from her about it but the bed becomes usable when you sell her the firewood
While disposition isn't as obviously shown as in Oblivion, it still exists in Skyrim. There might be no minigame and no charm spell, but by doing favours to NPCs increases their disposition towards the player, and at some point they consider you a friend and allow you to take some of their stuff.
Same with the first quest "Unbound" btw, whoever you join for the escape from Helgen, go with them to Riverwood and you'll be able to take stuff from their relatives house. Side with Hadvar and you get free gear from the forge and free, respawning crafting materials.
@@HappyBeezerStudiosthat explains a lot of my own confusion. Although it seems like some items will always be marked as stolen, cause sometimes you'll be able to loot every food and misc item in a house but a bow or armor piece will be stealing

@@kamirostorino9416 The game had a giant's hammer floating in the sky. In reality, what he did would absolutely be stealing.
It's at the minimum exploiting a mechanic. For a video that's very roleplay heavy its odd for the character to just walk into a place and take every piece of food in sight, even if TECHNICALLY its not labeled as stealing.
If you went to your buddy's house and asked to join them for dinner they'd probably be cool with that. If you walked in and took every bit of food out of their cabinets they'd be absolutely livid.

This is one of the reasons I still play Skyrim over 12 years after release. Role-playing in ways the game devs probably never anticipated. Yet even the basic game supports it... with a few mods added.
Hey, Vik. If you ever get the itch to do this again, be sure to look up a number of mods on the Nexus that add "jobs" to cities. With certain mods, you can become a cook, a tailor, an assistant to an established blacksmith, etc. Each of these jobs actually pays you a wage. Other mods let you open a booth in the market area. You first build the booth by buying materials from the general store, then, after an initial investment to acquire "stock", you simply sit at your booth and make transactions with townsfolk who walk up and open a bartering menu with you. The more sophisticated mods will allow your spouse to run the booth so that you can do another job. Using these mods allow you to completely bypass the whole guilty feeling of cleaning out your "friends" homes/businesses. I did this alongside the "Live Another Life" mod (which allows you to bypass the whole Helgen intro and start in any city or village of your choice.) I started in Riverwood as a local "character" in the village (much like the town drunkard, Embry, except I wanted to stop being a drunkard and build a life for myself.) After doing the obvious chopping wood for Hod and collecting ingredients and farming a bit, I got a job from Orgnar as an assistant barkeep and cook at the Sleeping Giant inn. I got steady pay and one of the rooms at the inn to call my own. Eventually, I built up enough of a grubstake to move to Whiterun. There, I quickly got a job from Proventus Avenicci to be a cook in Dragon's Reach. So not only was I making a steady wage, but I also had a bit of status being a staff member in the Jarl's palace. This was actually tangible status as the mod gave a bump to my speech score for having the job. A few other mods added lots of interesting NPCs (literally, one of the mods is called "Interesting NPCs") whom I could actually talk to and learn interesting stories and even (occasionally) accompany on a brief adventure. There is even a mod (sorry, can't find the name right this moment as I am in the process of re-installing Vortex and Skyrim for yet ANOTHER play through) -that allows you to to ask a friend to be your companion, except THEY take the lead by embarking on a random quest and I follow along as their companion. I ask you, what other game allows you to do all this?
