    Another great video man! People need to realise people don't hire us for commercials, they hire us for demos/reviews. There's a pretty big difference!

      I don't fault you for your business model, but it's still business. There are still incentive structures that are going to shape the format itself and the individual behavior of demonstrators. It is what it is, no getting around it. Not any one youtuber's fault if that's what they have to conform to in order to make money but in the end it makes the majority of youtube guitar content itself commercial in nature and driven by the needs of a consumption based industry rather than musicians or regular people.

    You damn right RUclipsrs should get paid. You're correct, some of these RUclipsrs are clearly biased, but the ones like you who spend a shit ton of time to create quality videos of quality gear and GIVE AN HONEST OPINION of the gear in question should damn sure be paid!

    To add to my comment I appreciate all you do for people like myself and really enjoy your informative opinions on various topics. I remember early into you starting your channel and around the same time I purchased my first effects unit (Line 6 Helix) and I had reached out to ask a few questions about how to go about setting it up and getting the most out of it for my needs. You reached out to me and we ended up talking on the phone and shooting the shit like 2 old friends for almost 2 hours which was really cool of you to take time out of your day to do that. Much appreciated my friend.

    For me, it depends on the channel. I trust your channel and opinions along with Kyle bull, sonic drive studio etc. ( and of course Ola’s channel ). But I look at it like, if a company is willing to pay a RUclipsr, it’s because they know the channel will create a fair, high quality representation of the product.
    I’ve created a few videos for RUclips and it takes A LOT of work and A LOT of time. So much respect to you guys for what you do !
    YOU DESERVE TO BE PAID FOR YOUR WORK.

    • @TONEWARSgearshow
      @TONEWARSgearshow  2 месяца назад

      Thank you so much! You are right. A lot of people think it's easy because they just base their opinions on the finished product. They don't see what goes on behind the scenes. It's countless hours of work for us. I still love what I do, but I do need to be compensated for my time and efforts. Thanks so much for commenting. I really appreciate it.

  • @justinellis9465
    @justinellis9465 2 месяца назад

    I Absolutely feel like RUclipsrs should be compensated for their work. Their time and gear that goes into making content for us is a form of informative entertainment that I enjoy watching. I used to be able to go to my local guitar store that was locally owned and try out all the latest and greatest gear. But unfortunately that store had to close their doors over 10 years ago and little by little any music store that was local to my city was over a 45 minute drive and they weren't guaranteed to have the type of gear that I was interested in checking out. So that became more of a hassle than anything. So when smartphones and RUclips came out people slowly started dropping videos to help educate people like myself on all types of stuff music related and I for one am super grateful for that. I've personally ordered gear without trying it out solely based on shootout videos. I can think of 4 big purchases my Helix, Ke.per, EVH 5150 iii, Synergy Syn 50/50 poweramp, and multiple guitars. So if it helps you guys get paid along the way I'm all for it because even though said RUclipsrs are being incentified by making certain videos it's my opinion on whatever piece of gear that matters in the end because I'm the one ordering whatever I'm researching at that time and you and So many others have helped to share your time and give me the important information I need to make that purchasing decision.

  • @seannicholes
    @seannicholes 2 месяца назад +3

    Sorry, I'm sure this comment will be a bit long. I have spoken before about how you guys deserve compensation for what you do. Endorsements can be good or bad. As others here have said, there's a degree of trust to be built. We have to try the things you say are good, if they are not then we lose trust.
    I've become a fan of this channel because I like your playing, and I really like your tones. I play your captures, they sound fantastic to me. There is something really awesome about being able to hear you rip these great riffs, then be able to get that sound for ourselves.
    I like the system that you Kyle Bull and Ben Eller use where you make the agreement that you'll try out the product but if you don't like it you just don't make a video at all. It avoids being negative about the product, and you keep your integrity.

    One of my fondest memories of your channel was when you found a current picture of John P.'s JP2C, adjusted yours to match his, and still preferred your own settings. I thought to myself, wow, this is a fresh and honest perspective. Your integrity and excitement to show us new things, rather than try to convince us we need to buy something, keeps me coming back. I think you have one of the more down to earth channels, I feel like I'm hanging out with a friend, and not watching a commercial. I love the sleeveless tees. I'm surprised to hear the cost you incur to create this content. I would have never guessed it; so, I'm inclined to agree with you. I bought a Mesa Badlander 100, because of you, and I couldn't be happier. I hope the channel continues to grow and the manufactures compensate you for it.

    Many sensible answers here, I'd like to add the following points :
    (1) if you're not going to be completely honest/objective with your review, then better don't say anything at all. Just show people the stuff you want to showcase, BE FAIR, let them decide which one is better, cooler, their favorite, etc. Some of my fav videos from Jarrod are precisely those in which there's no commentary/opinion (just the amps).
    (2) If you also want to show people your feelings about this or that gear, let people know THAT from the very beggining. Remember : although you might actually be a very "interesting" person to listen to, people comes here looking for GEAR. If you also treat people with some of that inevitably accumulated, residual vile from day to day frustrations, which happens to 'shine through' at times when faced with stuff we don't like or even despise, expect some crap thrown back at you too (for instance, the Mezzabarba vs SLO 100w comparisons; a lot of people love the latter, no need to krap all over it just because you like the Mezzabarba better).
    (3) It is fair to ask for remuneration when you put that much work into something you're giving away for free. The question is how to get paid for your work in cases like these without ruining people's trust.
    Cheers! And keep it up J.

    If there is a market, then there is money - that is the rule in every business. If somebody presents a product in a high quality way, then he will have his viewers. The decision to buy something or not is another thing, but a video helps to get a first impression. I have to play an amp myself to find out, if it is for me.

    Yes, all work is worth something and RUclipsrs absolutelly deserve getting some form of income from their activity. I am a big proponent of the open source / community development but giving the result 'for free' does not mean that you have to do it 'for nothing'. Any creation system that does not reward contributions / content creation is simply going to die by exhaustion / loss of motivation (or just no more time because one need to get some money to pay the bills) of the creators. Giving for free is not working for nothing.

    youtubers are not reviewers most of the time
    and actual reviewers are rarely independent, also quite often reviewing things requires some special deal to get the items before the release
    these days if you have different opinion than the mainstream you may get shadowbanned over social media etc, fanboys will downvote links or the actual content etc, unless you are really known youtuber
    I once thought to create a page/an article with links to nice channels, and I thought I would call it.... honest youtubers. Because honesty is worth more these days. The people who are truly honest will stay honest no matter what, as long as they have some other sources of money like a regular job.
    Guitar gear market is highly driven by hype. Also it is very subjective and experiences will be different even due to having different singal chain (speakers, even speaker cable with some picky amps).
    The users are the problem as well. You can tell how many fanboys will come here just to say you must be doing something wrong just because you did not like the amp. Rarely they may be right, as some amps may have some tricks to dial them "properly", but a good product should be simply intuitive. Yea you need to spend 1037120937 hours on a gear worth 4000 to make it sound right, sure that makes sense, lol.
    Another topic is cash. People are not discussing value anymore. It is hard to judge the value but if you can get Landry or Splawn amps at the half price of some others then well it should raise a few questions imho. Sellers are making up lots of BS to sell their gear, but if you comment the price you will be beaten in many communities. I don't see why freedom of speech applies only to the sellers. Yea, some people are annoying and trying to low-ball the offers, but it is in our interest to get the best gear at the lowest prices and get rid of audio-voodoo.
    I prefer old Kyle Bull videos. He tries to be honest but also has to say "take it with a grain of salt" these days, and now I cannot appreciate it so much anymore.
    If there is any model which is fair, that is getting money from other sources.
    Some people have patreons, donations etc, some other do sponsorship which is not related to the reviewed items, and some get the money just from the advertisements.
    BTW. you have quite long live-like videos, but generally editing takes a lot of time. I find it to be a nightmare, no joy from cutting the video.

    No issue with getting paid and paid well. After a little bit of time watching reviews I know who I trust and who I don’t. I also know I sometimes disagree with some guys on equipment. Guys that I believe legitimately like Fishman modern pickups I disagree with. That’s a taste issue I suppose. I think they sound like ass. GLEEEN says pickups are not that important. I disagree but his point is speakers/cabs/IRs are more important. To that I agree, but pickups can drastically change everything about the tone, feel, and way you play. In a mix does it make a difference? Yes but not as much as other factors.

Jarred even tried the Fishman Moderns on his channel and came to the exact same conclusion we did (we replaced ours before Jarrod did his review so it wasn’t due to his opinion). I’ve heard some awesome recordings with the Moderns, and I’m sure they sound fine in the mix, but in the room I found them very “meh” at best.

    • @justsomerandomguyman
      @justsomerandomguyman 2 месяца назад

      @@robspectre1973 Sure, but Jarred never uses active pickups. In every video, he's always playing EBMM JP guitars. He clearly prefers passive pickups, and actives definitely have a very different sound (a lot tighter and more modern).
      I have like 15 guitars at this point, including 3 different kinds of Fishmans, and a bunch of different passive pickups, and I honestly like them all, but pretty much none of them are as tight as the Fishman Moderns. They do have a bit of an upper mid sharpness to them that some people don't like, but that makes them cut really well for super modern stuff. Very percussive and sharp. Excellent for technical death metal, thrash, etc.
      The Tosin Abasi Fishman is a little more warm sounding and is probably better suited to a wider variety of music (and wider variety of metal).
      At the end of the day, how things sound when recorded and mixed is really the only thing that matters.

    There's nothing wrong with getting paid, but if it's your business model to take money or products from gear companies in exchange for content then what you are is a marketer and your clients are the manufacturers. There's still an incentive structure based on selling gear and maintaining positive relationships with manufacturers because that's the entire reason for this type of content to exist. While it is nice to have access to a lot of gear demos, they're really not that different from that ad in the magazine in the end, because they're still advertisements and they still aren't produced from the perspective of a consumer who paid money for something and has to contend with whether or not it meets their specific needs on a daily use basis. You're really just getting the specs and some sound clips. That's not to say that doing paid demos is wrong or that you have to buy and extensively use everything you feature for a year or something before your opinion on it is valid, but there's a difference in terms of the usefulness of the information when it comes to making a decision based on limited resources. Hennig has a pretty good attitude about what he does; he's open about the fact that he's basically a freelance marketing consultant and that his primary customers are the manufacturers. If that's what you have to do in order to get paid for your time then there's nothing wrong with it, I don't hold it against you personally but from my personal perspective as a consumer all these gear demos on RUclips are only so useful when it comes to making a purchasing decision simply because of the limitations of the format, which isn't RUclipsrs fault.
