John Lydon has never once claimed to have invented punk, if anything its the opposite he has always claimed the Sex Pistols were in a genre of their own and the punk explosion followed.

"We invented Punk, We write the rules!" - John Lydon, Monday 18th March 1996, at the 100 Club reunion press conference. Widely available online to see and check. John claims he invented Punk when it suits him, and denies it when that suits him too.

This guy knows his kung foo..the pistols were the final ingredient to ignite the punk scene ,invent it or not ..I think the word would have remained as an American slang word if it wasn’t for the media calling them punk..no scene without them..fact

Thanks for saying Cavern era Beatles were proto punk; I wish Apple 🍏 would allow those recordings to be cleaned up and released… but I guess they don’t want to be put in that category

I’m guessing they eventually will clean up and release it all. Thanks for watching and commenting Mr tired!

*Pretending that straight ahead pub rock bands didn't exist before punk happened is just ludicrously wrong. It suits and supports the journalistic view, but it's wrong for anyone with a memory. For example, Dr Feelgpod and The Stranglers existed before the Pistols did*
*If bands left you in a field after the gig, well, that is what happened after being given a show you enjoyed - by groups you adored (are they supposed to invite you home ...)*
*The Sex Pistols were four kids in a band playing music, the media picked on them because they looked weird and SWORE (and so what). They were a tight, great, intelligent group that succumbed to media, political and management stupidity*
*Most all said here is profuse lore and parroting what they've said themselves. Vicious himself was a witty, goofy kid who was well competent on bass, but fell deeply into his own addled world (not helped by his equally addled girlfriend). Who cares if he was a murderer. He's dead now, so it's become folklore*
*Lydon repeatedly contradicts what he says like the contrarian he is, but it's always clever regardless, so what's it really matter*
*In the end, they left great music and a legacy that still evokes interest. What more could you ask for*
