- July 4 isn't the only Independence Day worth celebrating in America. Juneteenth, also known as Freedom Day, is celebrated all over America for the emancipation from slavery in the United States that occurred on June 19, 1865. Families across the country celebrate by breaking out their barbecues and cooking up some of their favorite bites. Here at Thrillist, we take a look at all the foods that are dished out and how you can celebrate as well.

Happy Juneteenth!!!✊🏿 2019
IT'S A FEDERAL HOLIDAY NOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Except we were still in secret bondage in Mississippi for another 100 years.
Y'all need some more Black Americans on here...👀
Happy Juneteenth everyone!!
The United States should make Juneteenth a national holiday. State holidays are being instated. New Mexico, where I live, has recognized Juneteenth as of 2006. Most folks here have never heard about it.
Nigerians and Caribbean are doing the most the most talking but dont understand why are they there df
That is NOT how cooked okra is supposed to look
I'm OVER 50. AND DIDN'T KNOW MUCH ABOUT IT. EDUCATION IS KEY!! FOR OUR BLACK HISTORY❤
I’m sorry but these ARE NOT Black people’s Juneteenth celebration foods! They are foods liked by all races and dubbed Black favorites by racists. Thrillist should change the name of this clip to “What’s your favorite foods to eat for Juneteenth” and note that these people are speaking for themselves;not the entire race.
Great Video Guys.
Saying the Emancipation Proclamation went into effect in 1863 but not all states got the memo in time delaying Texas until June 19, 1865 is misleading. During those 2+ years there was that little Civil War thing happening 😂 which didn't end until April 1865. Troops were then sent to clean up a few skirmishes along the way. That's pretty quick. But, yes, Juneteenth is a huge deal and should be widely celebrated. 👍
I wonder how this means anything to the two non black Americans
Happy Juneteenth😍
Yes. June 19th. But... the troops that arrived with the announcement were outnumbered and could not enforce. Two months later, it was able to be enforced.
I'm a Houstonian & a Juneteenth menu is straight BBQ's & Fish Fry's, & seafood boils , fruit galore, parades, & slab parties (car culture here, & all the music you can listen to, blues, hip- hop( DJ. Screw), everything. Juneteenth is the shit a day before my bday, & father's day celebrations please know it goes diiine ( down) how we say it in H-Tiiine( H-TOWN)
WHAT??? Why aint that okra fried? No wonder they don't like it.
Strawberry Soda/Red Kool Aid is like a must as well
