When people find these nonsense words amusing, they start to share them, and over time, they can become a part of everyday language. It's a testament to how language evolves and adapts, often influenced by media and popular culture.
I was forever getting walloped in German class for bursting out laughing when new silly sounding words were introduced, like "radeirgummi" and "kugelschreiber"; and of course "kunst" nearly got me a detention...
Years ago I needed to make up humorous names for people in an historical context. When I reviewed my list of candidates, I found that many more than expected contained one or more 'Gs', and concluded there was something inherently amusing about that letter.
Italian singer Adriano Celentano released a song in the 70s with nonsense lyrics meant to sound like American English, apparently to prove Italians would like any English song. It was a huge hit... youtube won't allow me to provide a link, but here is the name of the song: Prisencolinensinainciusol Have a listen and see if you start imagining, you can actually hear real words.
Sausages is apparently the 147th funniest word. So said an expert on the radio the other day. This is following Keir Starmer's blunder at his party conference.
Yes indeed im one who laughs at words and theres another thing that buggs me. Contagious accent when u hear someone speaking differently...cant find a theory yet thou It seems to affect some of us
I mean moist is a very real word and never ceases to be funny. The model might apply to those cases but not sure if it applies to every funny word. Also what about puns and punny words that are made of combining two words like eggceptional? the distance between this word and exceptional/egg is very short but still is funny in a dad joke kinda way
So gobbledygook is funny? And ordinary is... well, ordinary. Better give kids som funny names, from the beginning. Saves time, if their name allready sounds like a nickname. Some dog names are funny. So if they bark at you, they are mayby just mad about being teased by other dogs, and blame random humans, for it. I personally find random people more annoying, than people that scores lower, on the random scale. By the way - I find puzzling to be s funny word, and I don't find it puzzling anymore, now.
What a perfectly cromulent theory!
He's really embiggened my vocabulary.
Roald Dahl cracked the formula
92% is a pretty impressive amount, given he’s trying to quantify something that’s at least partially subjective

Is this a Nott and Jester reference?
@AntonoirJacques of course
@@hive_indicator318 I love it when you meet another critter in the wild!
Well, schnorgle my flammity-warble!
I wonder what the funniest word is mathematically
It’s got to be ‘fart’. Any kid will tell you the same.
Bob
@@Hemlocker Bob has to be up there you're onto something
@@HemlockerI Was saying "Bob" in a Rowan Atkinson voice.
Discombobulated
"Abdicates...abdicates...". It was hilarious on Countdown.
When the godwottery and taradiddle makes you absquatulate.
Explains why hearing the name Tackleberry always had me in stitches when watching Police Academy.
Oh man I forgot about that one and also "SweetChuck" BAAAaahaahaa those are cracking me up right now.
Quick, someone call Susie Dent to tell us what Figlam, Quingle, and Dooblydoo mean
Fry/Dent double act please!
Dooblydoo is a word by now. If it isn't in the OED, it should be.
This is commonly called the Atkinson quotient.
I've only come across this channel recently and I'm obsessed.
Eelsargassoty. We wont forget.
You’re wonderful. Thank you for brightening our days with amazing Maths 😍

John and Hank Green taught me that dooblydoo is a real word...

I so want the Words Unravelled podcast (with Rob words and Jess Zafarris) to do a deep dive on words like this.
Beautiful.
Rowan Atkinson can make most words funny, "Bob" being an example.
Please, accept my discombobulations.
You are the best

If you could use maths to find the funniest word possible, would you actually die laughing?🤔😂😂
I have calculated this and yes, yes you would.

Arts and sciences working together to weaponise language. A most discombobulating possibility.
underpants is always funnier than underwear. i learned this from Futurama director's commentary 😂

How you dooblydooin'? 😉
(Yes, I'm referencing Joey from Friends, but also Talkie Toaster from Red Dwarf.)
NO MORE RESEARCH OF THIS NATURE. Asimov wrote a story about the source of jokes, Jokester, and once discovered, humour was lost, forever.

Can we say Dr. Zeus circa 1937….
Why do we find some mathematicians more attractive than others? Is it they way they speak? Their hair colour?

A "quingle" could be a perfectly passable euphemism for a Vjayjay.
Look! Lots of words sound a bit like real words but are funny because they are nonsense but suggestive of silly things…gobble-hooter!
