I started building models at 10 yoa. I am now 72 and going back to my first love. I got to the point of making my own tools, painting aircraft markings, or car pinstripes. Not to mention super detailed models. You have to give it try. Its great for rainy days or when you just can't figure out what to do.
I recently got back into building model cars again after 30 years, I was blown away by all the stuff you can get now, just picked up the usps 1970 challenger in the metal tin, picked up purpleicius lacquer paint for it. From hobby lobby.

I love my local Hobby Lobby in Evansville Indiana. I always feel so calm and relaxed while I’m in there. I’m also a classic car artist in addition to building models. Sometimes, this place is my one stop shop for both hobbies. Spending a Saturday afternoon there is always a treat. 😊
I have kept my models since I was 10 years old, the first word I said before speaking was CAR, I already liked them and from then on, I have been able to keep them since the 60s, losing several of them along the way. I am 74 years old and returned to my lifelong hobby again. Your store is wonderful, I see it and I go crazy to be there, I congratulate you and I follow you on the internet.
Great addition Tim. I just went out to Hobby Lobby after watching your show and bought a 60 Ford truck I have been searching for. Also the paint selection is excellent and I found colors available I cant find in hobby stores. Good detailing supplies. Thanks again. Throttle Power is my favorite for good reason.
Very nice selection of models at Hobby Lobby. My Hobby Lobby is the closest hobby shop to me, and I frequently buy stuff there. I have two other privately owned hobby shops, but one is an hour and a half hours and the other one is 3 hours away. So for me it is Hobby Lobby or mail order. Overall, I try to keep a good stock of paint and primer. Thanks for sharing.
In Grove City Ohio , absolutely enjoyable to visit . Great crafts to look at , signs and plenty of things for my wife . I love the supply of HO trains , tracks , buildings ,etc . Models are fun and maybe I'll get back in it again soon after all it's a great way to relax and be creative when painting your own design and detail how you want it. Hope they have my old truck , a 1996 F-150 4x4
Thanks for your report, I’m a model railroader, there are zero hobby shops in my area, there is a Hobby Lobby in Reno, NV but I don’t make it there much. However there is one that’s supposed to be built in Carson City, NV where I’m living, they’ll be great to atleast pickup supplies, the actual models themselves I order online, otherwise it’s 100 miles to the nearest shop in Roseville, CA.
Haven't been to Hobby Lobby in a long time because they had the same old kits. Now that I know they have a different selection I'll have to go back. Thanks for the info
@map3384 I'm in the DFW area in TX. I go to a place called Hobby Town USA. that have good selection of kits. Stuff like Gundam, heavy equipment, planes, ships, armor, slot cars, trains sets, and a huge selection of stuff for diorama. They are a little more pricey but it's worth it for harder to find items
Love Hobby Lobby. I got one walking distance from me. Great for picking up quickly needed stuff. On the weekend I'll go and support my local hobby shops but they are a little driving distance, like a half-hour. I try to share the wealth cause I dont want to see any of them go away.
You're right about checking clearance. A few months ago I walked into one of my local stores, and I scored 3 cars and a Flame Toys Snake Eyes kit for considerably good prices.
We used to hop on our BMX bikes and ride about 7 or 8 miles across town to this huge U-shaped Hobby Lobby in OKC. Only had about $10 on me so I had to choose wisely. 😅 Back then you could get a new release non-motorized Tamiya armor kit for $8 or so. Ride back home holding that sack tight and maybe stop for an Icee before heading home. Really fun memories of that place.
When I was a kid I grew up in Lakewood CA. A 5 & dime store called Quigley's they always had a great selection of kits. I would mow lawns and wash cars in the neighborhood to buy the kits and paint. Those were fun days!
My local hobby shops there are 2, are way expensive, I wish Hobby Lobby had more selection. At Hobby Lobby the store is clean, nice service, great price.
May I say that the kits are more expensive because they are much better quality kits, but primarily not for the beginner as compared to the garbage that Hobby lobby sells.
Great video. It was like you were at my local HL lol. I really love using the gundam markers. I so agree on the paints! The Extreme Laquer goes on extremely well, dries fast and looks like its clear coated. Love that stuff! I like to use the signs as backdrops on my model pictures.
Hi Tim. Im glad i had the chance to say hi @ the nats. I just left the hobby lobby in clearwater fl and it would seem that the "plastic" hobbies have been condences to one side of an isle. Paints and eveything! Hummm...
I wish I had the models I had years ago, they would be collectors, cars, battleships, tanks, submarines, etc., would like to start one day back billing them again, great hobby....
The stores in my area have downsized their boxed model kit dept. by as much as 50%! Sure it's good if you're into 1:25 scale cars exclusively, but anything else, forget about it. Aircraft, shjps, big trucks i go to Ebay. There's even a decent hobby store nearby but they're almost all into and about R/C models. Now I only go to Hobby Lobby for building supplies.
My model club displays our models in the mall in front of Hobby Lobby in Yuba City, Ca. two weekends a year. It promotes our club, promotes the hobby and we always see a few people go in to look after seeing our models we built on display. It’s impossible for us to sit there for 3 days without going in and getting a few things ourselves. We still promote our local hobby shops too for modelers, but Hobby Lobby’s 40% off sale really helps those parents who want to get their kids into a hobby but just can’t afford to spend $40 or more for their kid’s first kit just hoping they’ll like it. For $15-20 though it’s a little easier for them to go in and let their son or daughter pick out a kit they like and hopefully it gets the younger generation into this hobby and keeps it going strong.
I always look through the craft aisles to find things I can use. I’ve found wires in the beading section, and an even better pin vise and bits set in the clockmaking section than in the modeling section.
There seems to be a difference in inventory depending on the size of the store. While I'm a vintage USA kit builder, I did find something of interest, the AMT 34 Ford truck kit. It was made in USA and I happen to catch it @ 40% off. I purchased it and will keep up on what arrives in the future @ HL.
Yes Hobby lobby does mix in some New kits every once in a while. Also those sales are good to stock up or get on kit you want and experiment with the other. The supply section has been growning also. We have three stores within 1/2 a mile from each other here. Hobby lobby, Micheals , and Hobby town. I go to all of them and check prices. Then anytime i'm on the road i look up Hobby lobbies to check out what they have different.
Great vid Tim thx 4 the heads up Hobby Lobby definitely got some kits and supply's I need cant never have too many M2s and slot cars🤣😁🤩scooter😎ps have a gooder rest of your week🤟
That orange model mat is awesome. Had it for a couple of months now. They rotate the 40% off the kits every couple weeks or so. Careful buying the Gundam markers, I got one and it was already dried out! Those polystyrene sheets and rods has saved my butt on a few difficult builds too. Lots of tools and items meant for other hobbies that can be used for models too.
I was at Hobby lobby with my wife the other day and bought a really nice black Mopar hat that had a embroidered logo in grey for only ten bucks really well made. they also had tons of models and metal man cave signs also.
To everyone saying they're too expensive, the kits aren't much cheaper if at all at my local hobby shop, especially the big trucks. And they literally have 40% off EVERY OTHER WEEK, I'd love to know where else you're going to get kits for $14-19 bucks.
@@BobBerardjr772 I'm pretty open and build whatever interests me. Right now I'm building a vintage 1967 airplane kit although have a truck on the shelf to build next. Keeps it from getting boring and brings different skills to the table. I'm kinda surprised by the lack of airplane kits at H/L w/ all the military operations going on currently.
That was a 66 Malibu SS REVELL kit not a 68. I bought it at Hobby Lobby a few months ago but returned it as it didn’t come with the staggered BF Goodrich T/A radials shown on the box art, it only had 4 stock tires. So it in reality isn’t a 2in1 kit, you can only build it stock.
that's an awesome selection of model kits at your hobby lobby dood. i have a seven model car kits myself most of the seven are opened but haven't been assembled the two i kept completely sealed are coca-cola themed being a dodge d-50 and a 77 ford van the ones i opened the box on are a ford courier(i looked a the decals but the plastic parts are still in the bags), a 67 mustang, a 64 galaxie, a 66 fairlane(which i saw in the video) and a 63 nova wagon from amt. i bought my model cars at my local wal-mart about a year ago and though it's not a model card i bought and assembled a pokemon model kit i got on ebay they're pretty easy to assemble and they're made by bandai(the brand that makes the gundam models) and i love the cinderace(cinderace is the gen 8 fire type stater pokemon scorbunny's final evolution) i put together. i gonna look at the other pokemon model kits in the future and pick my favorite ones.
You might have to look around to find display cases for footballs. Nice wood bases for trophy game balls that just happen to be the perfect size for 1/16 scale funny cars. Clean acrylic covers, look great.
I keep telling my wife I know there’s something at Hobby Lobby that I desperately can’t do without but she just looks at me and rolls her eyes 😂😂. I’m gonna show her this video to prove it to her and then she might believe me 🤣🤣🤣!!! Thank for another great video Tim. Bruce in Wv!!!
Thankfully they still carry the Duster 340, buy one of those and use the chassis for the Demon kit. The new tooling was a marketing ploy as they used most of the older kit that had that horrible basic chassis. They did do some new tooling but they kept that cheap level 1 chassis that is lacking in every area, the Duster chassis drops in with little issue and really takes the Demon kit to where I had hoped it would be. Still a great kit. If you are lucky and go on their 40% off days you can get a trunk full of kits on the cheap.
That '85 Camaro Z28 kit has been out since January 2023.It has a great decal sheet so I am building just about every color combination Chevrolet offered on this car in '85 & '86. I have built 18 so far out of 20 kits I have accumulated. Sometimes you can catch them on a 40% off boxed model kit sale. That's how I got most of mine.
Every other week the model kits are 40% off. A couple other items to look for at Hobby Lobby are Pipettes and Mixing cups for mixing paints for airbrushing. In the bead isle look for wire they got down to a 28 or 32 gage to use for brake or fuel lines. Embossing powder for doing carpets. Look around and see what else you can find
Our local one doesn't have nearly this selection. Mostly go there for supplies. I still have several actual hobby shops I frequent, and you can see them credited in my videos end credits. DMG Scale models
I'm lucky to have 3 Hobby Lobby stores and a few local hobby shops in my area. I support all of them. My local hobby shops get new kits faster so I get them there. I usually go to Hobby Lobby for something that's been out a while.
I design and build Balsa wood houses, garages and ive always built model cars. Ive collected over 250 die-cast cars trucks and trailers. The prices of plastic model cars are outrageous. I remember buying models from K-mart dor $3.59 back in the 1970s. Hot wheels were $0.50 Maybe it's time I sold all my 60s & 70s toys.
I go to a lot of model car swap meets (there are several in my archives) and guys are buying what the vendors bring to sell. So yes, now would be a good time.
Everything here in the Cincinnati area died in 2020, Toy Stores, Model Trains and Hobby Stores in general. No sign of this stuff coming back. We do have a Hobby Lobby around here but with no easy way to get to it and all of those DAM Round A-BOUTS it not worth wrecking your car for. Thanks for the post.
That's what I've heard..... When I would go to Ohio I always enjoyed stopping at Johnny's Toys.... Also went to a few model contests there back in the day.

as a kid i built a number of them. but loved the larger truck models. sad those are not made any longer. but at 65 i do not have the cash or space for making new plastic models. i need my money to buy food. and pay utility's.
I go to Hobby Lobby often for supplies just to support my local brick and mortar store. I visit the jewelry section too for scale chain and the resin craft section for things like micro scale starfish and seashells, things of that nature.
Age 77 here. Funny how so many of the commenters are going back to a hobby after a long hiatus. In my case, I am going back to two hobbies that I did as a kid...model building and stamp collecting.
HL used to carry Tamiya kits. They always had a good selection of 1/48 and 1/32 Tamiya aircraft kits. Now they just have the low-end Monogram legacy stuff.
@@asdf9890 I must have gone in the store 4 times and bought an AT-ST Walker. Each time I would always see a Walker Bulldog sitting there for $17. The 5th time I went in I had to buy it. Fun model, looks great.
Thanks for the video Tim. Might have to head over next week when they have the bi-weekly 40% off sale. Snagging the Alaskan Hauler for $30 would be nice!
Local HL (Anderson IN) has "generic" chrome marker now instead of Molotow. Marker has 2 tips - 0.8 and 3.0 mm. First try looks comparable to Molotow for shine. Best part is price - $ 3.99.
The only Hobby Lobby around here is about an hour away, so me and my wife have to make plans to visit them. We’re actually planning on making the trip soon. I’m excited to see this video, cause I can get everything I need to get ready for the winter months! Thanks for sharing! 👍
Model building sure has changed since the 70s and 80s. Lol. Ive got one of the 66 malibu from the 70s i was thinking about redoing. I think i still have the flame decals.

I am surprised that the management didn’t have something to say to you about filming in Hobby Lobby. I was in there once and saw something I liked and whipped out my phone to take a few photos of it. I soon became aware that I was being followed around by someone on their staff. They didn’t say anything but definitely was keeping an eye on me, for whatever reason. I think they have some nice stuff in there but I am definitely not a fan of who and how the place is run. I like to go see what they have but prefer to buy elsewhere.
Hard to compare when they first came around in the 90s they used to carry tamiya, dragon and of course the domestic standby companies plus badger ABs & parts! And I'm talking aircraft, armor & sci-fi!😳 Jman
I go to Hobby Lobby every two weeks when they have their 40% off sale, just to see if they have anything new. I have bought a lot of kits there, don’t think I ever paid full price! Since there are no other hobby shops in my area, ( hobbytown closed during the cool bs) HL is my go to. You missed the selection of Krylon Short Cuts paints in the paint aisle, they work great on models, too. Thanks!
So true........... Good eye, I went over there and there were some people looking at those paints so I decided to go back. But on my way home realized I forgot. 🙂
Very cool!!!!!! Probably try to find some 3d printed tires that have the width you are looking for. Or, if you know of a kit that has the wider tires rob them out of that kit.
Kit selection is different in each HL, I've found. The bins are marked for the company's standard kit layout, but each store does not get all those products so they fill with what they have. Most of the HL selection has changed very little in a year, but the Demon, the '60 Ford pickup, and '63 Ford pickup (not shown here but one of the bins is marked for it so it's coming soon) are new on shelf. Where is this store in your video? My nearest store does not have anywhere near the extras that you showed. It must be a bigger store than mine.

that's an awesome selection of model kits at your hobby lobby dood. i have a seven model car kits myself most of the seven are opened but haven't been assembled the two i kept completely sealed are coca-cola themed being a dodge d-50 and a 77 ford van the ones i opened the box on are a ford courier(i looked a the decals but the plastic parts are still in the bags), a 67 mustang, a 64 galaxie, a 66 fairlane(which i saw in the video) and a 63 nova wagon from amt. i bought my model cars at my local wal-mart about a year ago and though it's not a model card i bought and assembled a pokemon model kit i got on ebay they're pretty easy to assemble and they're made by bandai(the brand that makes the gundam models) and i love the cinderace(cinderace is the gen 8 fire type stater pokemon scorbunny's final evolution) i put together. i gonna look at the other pokemon model kits in the future and pick my favorite ones.
Ok, very very cool!!!!!!!
Great video Tim. That store does have an awesome selection, Thanks, Ron
Thank you Ron, they really do!
You might have to look around to find display cases for footballs. Nice wood bases for trophy game balls that just happen to be the perfect size for 1/16 scale funny cars. Clean acrylic covers, look great.
Thanks for the tip Don!
I've replaced the plastic floor piece on an AMT lowboy trailer with strips of basswood, also done it woth the hose bed for the AMT fire engine.
Oh wow, nice improvement!!!!!!
Wow those are a ton of cool kits.
I agree!!
Sounds good Bruce! 🙂👍😉
So true!!!!
Very cool, love that Z28
Transfer the ca glue accelerator into a needle dropper bottle. They sell them at hobby lobby in the model section
Great tip, thanks for sharing
I found that they have alot of supplies waaaaaaay cheaper than most online stores😊
I agree
Every other week the model kits are 40% off. A couple other items to look for at Hobby Lobby are Pipettes and Mixing cups for mixing paints for airbrushing. In the bead isle look for wire they got down to a 28 or 32 gage to use for brake or fuel lines. Embossing powder for doing carpets. Look around and see what else you can find
So very true Chuck!!!!!
The models kits and canvases are the only reasons I go into Hobby Lobby.
Cool!!
Our local one doesn't have nearly this selection. Mostly go there for supplies. I still have several actual hobby shops I frequent, and you can see them credited in my videos end credits. DMG Scale models
Cool, gotta support the local hobby shops!!!!!!
I'm lucky to have 3 Hobby Lobby stores and a few local hobby shops in my area. I support all of them. My local hobby shops get new kits faster so I get them there. I usually go to Hobby Lobby for something that's been out a while.
Cool, sounds good Jim!
Belle vidéo 👌 😉 🚛 🚛. Super 👌 👍 😉 🇺🇸 🇫🇷
Thank you Alain....... Are there any Hobby Lobby stores where you live?
Non je ne pense pas. Des magasins, oui mais avec tant de choses comme chez vous, c'est plus difficile à trouver. @@THROTTLEPOWER
@@alaindunkerque59 Ok, I wondered.
👍😉🇺🇸🇫🇷@@THROTTLEPOWER
As soon as my local store gets that old Kenworth rig, I'm getting one.
Cool!!!!!!!!!!
I design and build Balsa wood houses, garages and ive always built model cars. Ive collected over 250 die-cast cars trucks and trailers. The prices of plastic model cars are outrageous. I remember buying models from K-mart dor $3.59 back in the 1970s. Hot wheels were $0.50
Maybe it's time I sold all my 60s & 70s toys.
Those were the good ol' days!!!!
@@THROTTLEPOWER The owner's Tom and John of Johnny's Toys starting pulling out in 2019 and KB Toys and the last to go was Toy's R US. Cell Phone's are the down fall of everything cause when you buy on line it may not get there in go shape that's the problem that I keep running into. I miss those days.
@@edmaphet6 I miss those days too
Hobby Lobby Needs To Bring In Sports Tek Lace Hoodie Laces All Colors And Gildan zip up hoodies And Halloway Colorblock Fleece Hoodies

Cool video Tim👍
Thank you Paul 👍
I was there and lots of nice models - none of the cars i modeled and still model but not bad .👍
Pretty good place to pick up some kits. 🙂👍
We love Hobby Lobby
Yes, it's a great store!
kind of funny, i stopped going to Hobby Lobby because I never saw anything new....thanks for the video...ill stop by soon
Sounds good Ron!
as a kid i built a number of them. but loved the larger truck models. sad those are not made any longer.
but at 65 i do not have the cash or space for making new plastic models. i need my money to buy food. and pay utility's.
I understand
I go to Hobby Lobby often for supplies just to support my local brick and mortar store. I visit the jewelry section too for scale chain and the resin craft section for things like micro scale starfish and seashells, things of that nature.
Cool!!!!!
Same layout as the hubby lobby in anderson sc they had th3m in the exact same spots on the shelf
👍👍
The Iwata Neo TRN-1 airbrush is a great airbrush I've painted many bodies with that airbrush
Thank you, good to know
Wish they’d carry Tamiya ship kits, paints tape and glues. Got to buy them online.
I agree... I remember back in the day they carried lots of Tamiya kits.
Can't beat that Revell 29 Model A. Buy 2.
So very true James!
Great place!
It really is!
Good stufff❤❤❤
I agree 🙂👍
I'm fortunate to have a local hobby shop and Hobby Lobbys in my area. A guy really needs a second job 😂
I agree Robert, especially with all the cook kits coming out!
Age 77 here. Funny how so many of the commenters are going back to a hobby after a long hiatus. In my case, I am going back to two hobbies that I did as a kid...model building and stamp collecting.
Two great hobbies!
MY HOBBY LOBBY HAS A GREAT SELECTION ALSO. VERY CLOSE TO THE SAME AS YOURS. OTTUWA, IOWA.
It's great to hear that you have a good selection as well!
HL used to carry Tamiya kits. They always had a good selection of 1/48 and 1/32 Tamiya aircraft kits. Now they just have the low-end Monogram legacy stuff.
Yes, I remember those days!
They still carry 1 or 2 Tamiya tank models. I’ve almost bought the Tamiya M41 Walker Bulldog kit several times.
@@asdf9890 The M41 is a GREAT kit!!!!!!!!!
Sounds good Tim!!!!
@timcarson8146 that's what I do when they have something new
@@purpurahaze9179 👍👍
Local HL (Anderson IN) has "generic" chrome marker now instead of Molotow. Marker has 2 tips - 0.8 and 3.0 mm. First try looks comparable to Molotow for shine. Best part is price - $ 3.99.
Cool, I will have to look into that Dave.
The only Hobby Lobby around here is about an hour away, so me and my wife have to make plans to visit them. We’re actually planning on making the trip soon. I’m excited to see this video, cause I can get everything I need to get ready for the winter months! Thanks for sharing! 👍
😉 Cool!!!! 🤜🤛
I love hobby lobby , recently bought a couple master grade gundam kits for 40% off
Aaaaa, very cool!!!!!!!!
Model building sure has changed since the 70s and 80s. Lol. Ive got one of the 66 malibu from the 70s i was thinking about redoing. I think i still have the flame decals.
I agree, it really has..... That will be a cool build!
Extreme Lacquer is great rattle can. I heat the can and they spray great.
So true, it really is
Tim Our zMofel Manufaturers Have Really Improved - Enhanced Their Reissues of Old Classic. kits Like The 66 Flipnose Malibu Whovh Has Lsrts From yhe Orange & The Black Version in One Box. Round 2 Eith Affed Diorana Parts & Custom oarts. In Kits too,!

I have several different airplane models unopened. Beavers,Otters, Beech 18. I am always looking for them in hobby shops.
Cool!!! 👍 🙂
Hmmm, I've never had a problem with them Brian. Actually they welcome it here.
"Hotter than Apple Butter", that's my people right there.
👍🙂
I don't have a hobby shop nearby, but 2 hours away is a Hobby Lobby, and I'll purposely schedule trips for when the kits are on sale😂 Great video!
😉 Cool!!! 🤜🤛
didn't know they started selling kyoukai senki HGs (that "mailes reiki" kit shown around 4:29 is from that series)
👍👍
Hard to compare when they first came around in the 90s they used to carry tamiya, dragon and of course the domestic standby companies plus badger ABs & parts! And I'm talking aircraft, armor & sci-fi!😳
Jman
I agree
I go to Hobby Lobby every two weeks when they have their 40% off sale, just to see if they have anything new. I have bought a lot of kits there, don’t think I ever paid full price! Since there are no other hobby shops in my area, ( hobbytown closed during the cool bs) HL is my go to. You missed the selection of Krylon Short Cuts paints in the paint aisle, they work great on models, too. Thanks!
So true........... Good eye, I went over there and there were some people looking at those paints so I decided to go back. But on my way home realized I forgot. 🙂
Awesome video. Great information!! Thanks Tim 👍🏻🤘🏻
Thank you Frank 🙂
Great stuff at HB! Picked up a '70 Roadrunner and looking for wider tires. Any suggestions?
Very cool!!!!!! Probably try to find some 3d printed tires that have the width you are looking for. Or, if you know of a kit that has the wider tires rob them out of that kit.
@@THROTTLEPOWER Yes I have robbed tires from other kits in the past- way back when it was cheaper 😃
@@alkelenson648 👍👍
Never a 40 percent discount on the overpriced diecast. Great video 👍
Very true!
In Louisville by the Jefferson Mall
What even better is the Hobby Lobby regular has 40% off their kits every 5 weeks or so.
So true, you can get some good deals with the 40% off coupon.
Haven't been to mine lately I'm going to have to make a visit
Cool!!!!
Thank u for sharing I go to hobby lobby for models and supplies keep on building
