Good advice there. But the background music is a bit too loud and threatens to drown your voice. Voice levels up, background music levels down.

I know this is old but I did the same. I came back to drumming after a 5 year hiatus. I've drummed more on my pad than I have on my drum set.
It's broadened the things I can play and I don't regret it.

Rudiments are important because you learn how to do those crazy chops. Think of this pattern in 16th notes:
    RLLR RLLK R
The first R is on the downbeat of 1. The last R is on the downbeat of 4. The kick doesn't have to be there. But it makes the last R have a better entrance. How do we get this to sound fuller (there's currently alot of empty space) and choppy like Vinnie Colauita?
    We learn:
    - Triplets
    - Sextuplets
    - 5-stroke rolls
    - paradiddles
    - para-paradiddles
    We get this:
Rllr rLrL rllR lRlR rLrL rllR. The kick (K) goes somewhere on the last two diddles on the left.
Here we have a full sextuplet chop that was aided by knowledge of playing 5-stroke rolls in triplets, building up the chop only to realize that you were just playing alternating para-paradiddles (a 6 note phrase).
Try to play it at 80 bpm to see what I mean.
