- In 2004, the MTA created the MTA Bus Company, abbreviated as MTA Bus, a subsidiary, to takeover 7 private bus companies in NYC that were overseen by the NYCDOT after being called by former mayor of NYC Michael Bloomberg to do so. Those companies were Liberty Lines Express, Queens Surface, New York Bus Service, Command Bus Company, Green Bus Lines, Jamaica Buses and Triboro Coach. The takeover started with Liberty Lines Express operations ending on January 3rd, 2005 and finally with Triboro Coach on February 20th, 2006. MTA Bus did not acquire the NYCDOT-subsidized lines of Academy Bus or the now defunct Atlantic Express.
This video goes briefly into how the 7 companies were according to what riders had to say about em concerning service, maintenance and should the MTA have took over. The MTA was initially reluctant to takeover but later agreed to takeover the 7 companies operations after being contacted by former NYC mayor Michael Bloomberg to do so, on the condition that NYC continues to pay the MTA to run MTA Bus like they did with the private lines. Due to legal matters, New York State Legislature could not have NYCT takeover the companies. Hence why MTA Bus was created.
In the early 2000’s I remember riding New York bus service and liberty bus lines I really miss riding those mci suburbans and New York bus service mci d4500’s from 2002 Great video Clayson.
When the QM21 was a Jamaica Bus route, it ran every 10 minutes and had relatively high ridership. Then, the MTA took over and cut service. Now, it runs every 30 minutes and every bus is empty- no one’s waiting 30 minutes for an express bus.
New York bus Service and Liberty Lines should have been left alone. I know. I drove for NYBS and Edward Arrogoni kept those buses clean and spotless. We were proud to drive those buses! Go ask MTA Bus how their buses run, how much pride they have dring down Fifth and up Madison. I can't speak from a bus driver standpoint on the Cooper run companies but I have ridden them. They pale in comparison to NYBS. Dirty, filthy, habitually late. The service to Co-Op City from Flusing was operated by Queens Transit. At night the service was just a little more than a rumor. It was sometimes that bad.
I started in 85 with Queens Transit then Queens Surface Corp.. we were all Family who looked out for each other even Management, we always worked together on make it happen, something you don’t see anymore with MTA-Bus
Awesome. The private bus lines I later learned were very much like family.. When MTA Bus came, that was pretty much ruined. Very unfortunate...
@@newyorkbusguy yes very sad, we would look forward to coming to work,
The city government is run by career government bureaucrats who knows nothing.
This never should’ve happened in the first place; this was one of the MTA’s biggest blunders in the last ten years.
I also remember back in 2008 the MTA reduced 23 bus stops for the Q60 along Queens Blvd to speed up service. In my opinion the Q60 doesn’t need to be a limited or SBS route, this is a route I’ve ridden for a number of years and I also lived next to the Q60, ridership can get high at times yes. And it’s a good thing frequency for the Q60 is as low as every 5 minutes.
Now since Green Lines is now JFK/Far Rockaway, these buses look like they're on the verge of breaking down in the middle of service. The same can be said with Laguardia (formerly Triboro coach)
I keep thinking about this topic, the government has taken away our agency over things as basic as transportation.
The JBI part is pretty accurate. You practically have to run for the bus to catch it and most service is slow.
They should have just taken over Triboro coach and green line but leave command Jamaica Liberty and New York bus service alone
@@newyorkbusguy well my personal experience I grew up around the private lines but when it came to the Takeover I wasn't really around for it but honestly seeing a PBL bus with the PBL paint scheme and an MTA logo was kind of like a spit in the face
Also should've left Queens Surface alone too.
Before MTA bus company took routes: BM1,BM2,BM3,BM4,BM5,B100 and B103 limited they were MTA NYCT ?
They were operated by Command Bus Company before the MTA took over in December 2005.
@@newyorkbusguy They were private routes but still operated in a command bus company which was still MTA ?
I am glad that MTABC takeover, but I somehow wish that the PBL's nostalgic buses such as, the MCI Classics, can come to NYCT bus area for express buses. At least MTAB gets the Orion VII Hybrids, in order to make their fleet more eco-friendly despite their emission worsening runs with their RTS and other models that had 2 stroke engine powertrains of either D.D. 6V71 and 6V92. I have yet to ride the express buses since forever. And New York Bus Service and Liberty Lines are what I know to be the cleanest bus companys from Yonkers and the Bronx. But; had they received RTS back in their days ?
@@newyorkbusguy I nearly did in June 2021 for BM2, but come to find out it went ahead of my expected time in the tracker
I think it was a good idea that MTA took over, as there has been some major improvements, although a decent amount of routes still have shit frequency.
@@newyorkbusguy The Q60 for example, im currently now on 4149 on that route as I'm writing this, and BARELY got it! The next bus won't come for over 20 minutes..
@@mtatransportationstudios6986 q50 why I had to wait 54 mins for a Q50 hmmmm????
@@newyorkbusguy really unfortunate 😔

You have a link to the S. Street channel where you got those videos from. It's legit hard to find any footage of the prior bus companies on RUclips, and idk why.
His channel is no longer on RUclips unfortunately.
Yeah I just discovered. What a damn shame too! Almost all the publicly avaliable videos are of former stock post takeover. :C
@@Neillan Yea man. Real sad his channel is gone...
@@newyorkbusguy You know any other reliable sources online for photo/videos of the former 7?
@@Neillan For photos of the 7, gallery.bustalk.info/ mainly. But also flickr. For youtube, the only other person with some private line videos now is trainluvr.
It was definitely a great idea for the MTA to take over all 7 NYCDOT PBLs for the most part with most former PBL routes having better service, improved frequencies and better reliability. Although till this day is still a few routes inherited from the PBLs that don’t have great service such as the Q7, Q8, Q11, Q19, Q21, Q23, Q35, Q38, Q39, Q47, Q52 SBS, Q66, Q72, Q101, Q110, Q112, Q113 and Q114. I’ve ridden most of the mentioned routes here and this is from my experience with these routes.
The funny part of the takeover was that is was partially undone after MTA Long Island bus left the rest of the system to become NICE bus. lol
Off topic, but do you know what's the story with 2021 Gillig Advantage BRT Plus CNG #2043? Why is this bus OOS?
@@newyorkbusguy A hard crash like with #2016?
@@newyorkbusguy link or source?
As a result, 2043 will be out of service for a very long time.
Nobody cares about the customer less than the government
I KNEW Queens buses back then. Sure the Q25/34 or the Q10 were okay, these were busy routes with lots of service. But SE Queens especially suffered miserable service. Compare western Queens and Astoria levels of scheduled service then to today. You can't. Many of today's routes did not exist and you could not easily connect to routes outside those areas. I prayed for MTA takeover for years and was elated when it finally happened. Bus fans want to see a rainbow of livery colors and drivers who broke speeding and other safety rules, but good riddance to the old companies. Too bad about losing NYBS and Liberty though. The old companies lasted as long as they did because it cost less per passenger mile than the TA to operate and subsidize. But you got what you paid for.
Nope should have never happened.
@@newyorkbusguy should just make all of the queens mta bus depots one company, make spring creek part of nyc transit and make yonkers and Eastchester part of mabstoa.
@@newyorkbusguy they can grandfather spring depot into the Civil service system and change laws where mabstoa can take control of yonkers and Eastchester
@@newyorkbusguy the city pays mta for mta bus almost 1 billion to operate 8 mta bus depots. You correct why mta bus was created however if they want to they can change state laws if they no longer want to operate mta bus.
@@newyorkbusguy nyc would still have to mta for cost.
@KennethRembert137 nope mta is not interested unless Albany push for a takeover.
MTA should takeover ( NICE) Long island Nassau routes. What's MTA koolaid??
Actually nice was MTA Long Island Bus, and MTA need to take it back.
It was originally owned by MTA under their Long Island Bus service before it was sold off to Transdev.
It wasn’t own by MTA, but was run by them. Nassau’s Mangano in 2012 did not want to pay MTA the subsidy.
