This video was tremendously helpful this week while I was in the NYC area from DC. I was booked as a background actor for a two day shoot in Midtown Manhattan. However, my hotel was in Maspeth, Queens. My call time each day was 4 o’clock in the afternoon for 10-12 hour overnight shoots. Although I had my car, I really did not want to hassle with the idea of driving into the city at that hour and try to find parking, not to mention the expense of a parking garage. I watched this video and thought that I might give it a try. I downloaded the app and enter the route info. I was pleasantly surprised to find that I could catch a bus across the street from my hotel that took me directly to Queens Plaza subway station, where I could catch a train to my destination in Midtown.-Bryant Park. One bus, one train. How easy would that be? I must mention that I am a 70-year-old woman with no experience using Metro. Despite the easy route and excellent information in this video, I was very apprehensive. I was concerned about getting off at the correct stop, taking the correct train in the right direction - uptown or downtown, but mostly I was concerned for my safety. I was fairly certain I could get to my destination safely, but I wasn’t at all certain as to how safe my return trip would be. I decided I would go for it. After downloading the app, I entered my route, and it was displayed step-by-step from beginning to end. The most difficult part was trying to find $2.75 in change until I can get a MetroCard. The first day was a breeze. Although I had the instructions and directions from the app, I did ask a few people, including the woman working at the subway booth. I’ve heard over the years that New Yorkers are unfriendly and dismissive. If I had a question, I would ask someone, and they were very friendly and helpful and providing the information I needed. Did Metro transit women was especially helpful providing step-by-step instructions as to using the MetroCard machine. It was covered in the video, but I didn’t remember the details at the time. We wrapped it 630 the following morning. The sun was up and I decided to take the train and bus back to the hotel. I felt that I could safely do that and it was not a problem at all. I was advised by fellow actors that I should not use this motive transportation if we were to rap at midnight or early morning hours. I still had one more long day and night i’m shooting, and I thought about driving and just biting the bullet for the parking garage. When the time came, I decided to used MTG a second time. What I did forget was that I could use my metro card on the bus and it would automatically transfer me to the subway. I’m not remembering that, I scrounged up another $2.75 and change the second day and use that, in addition to the metro card for the subway. I only say scrounge up,because coins were hard to come by at that point. I wish I had realized the metro card would’ve been sufficient. But, next time. The second night of shooting wrapped around two or 2:30 in the morning. I nixed the idea of public transportation back to the hotel, and used another mode of transportation that I had not yet used and experienced-ride share. Nope. I’ve never used Uber or Lyft, but I did that night. I downloaded the Lyft app, and my return trip from Midtown to my hotel was a seamless 15-20 minute trip. It was a little more than $2.75, but I did not worry about my safety. I would suggest watching this video several times. If you attempt public transportation in the city, I would suggest watching the video again after your first trip. You will catch things that you missed the first time around, but will prove extremely helpful for the next time. As much as I like the convenience of using my car to get around, I was extremely impressed by how easy it is to use Metro transit and how efficient - time wise and financially- it is. Oh, and by the way, the buses and the subway trains show and call all of the stops before you arrive at those points. They really have taken the guesswork out of it.
I'm going tomorrow. Pretty scared. Hoping I will only have to use the subway the other stuff seems complicated :/ Definitely going to get an unlimited 7 day card. hope to god I don't lose it or anything else important
Sarah is #1 NYC guide on youtube hands down. No disrespect to the others who are very good. Yes only US citizens should vote. Thank God they did in 2016.
This is one of Sarahs videos which are helped us to make no mistakes in NYC in October 2019. The city is great and Sarah makes a good job to inform tourists in advance. Thank you Sarah.
I was only there three days but was running all over the place and went with the unlimited card, it was totally worth it. I try to give the card to a homeless person before I leave so they can use it for the rest of the days.
This is the most useful video I have ever seen from NYC!! Thank you SO much for sharing. Sometimes we are so used to the "system" that it looks too basic, but those tips are priceless for first timers! Mainly for us, tourists from abroad 😁 THANK YOU!!!
We are planning to buy two adult metro cards for our visit. Do children aged 11 need a metro card as well? Also how far out of New York can you travel on the metro card. We are going to a game at UBS arena.
Thank you, arrived from Ireland yesterday. It was a great help to get started on using the subway. Just to say that "dip" means putting your card in and out immediately. Also, it doesn't matter if you don't have a zip code when buying the metro card, it will pause and go ahead anyway.
How come you've “only“ 43000 subscribers when your videos about New York are clearly the best ones I found? Giving you a lot of thumbs up and subscribed to your channel. 👍👍👍👍
I just came across your page and love the tips as I am a flight attendant and sometimes take the subway or walk as where I come from we walk a lot. So thank you for this in-depth subway subject. Definitely gonna follow you. Thanks again!
The select bus is different than an express bus, the sbs is still $2.75 and I felt bad for others since you got on a sbs but didn't mention it, but an express bus is usually going from another borough to Manhattan, it's just an alternative to the subway (and a more expensive way)
Sarah I really like the info in this video. It's great for the average able bodied person, but not every visitor is. Accessibility information about the subway and buses wold make a good addition
I have to have both options open to me when I visit NYC. If my trip will be concentrated in the city (Manhattan) or the Bronx, I will use the MTA. If I'm mainly going to be in the outer boroughs (Southeast Queens or Brooklyn with the exception of downtown) I'm driving. Born and raised ex New Yorker (Queens)
I love your video .. I would add know before you go. As New Yorker know to look where we are going fist we all know their is always an option from the bus to the subway ferry . I would add if the subway car is empty and is rush hour do not get into the smelly train car
I just want to say thank you so much for your channel! Me and my partner are planning to move up to NYC after living in Texas for all of our lives and your videos have been helping me understand everything so well. Thank youuuu.
Sarah loved your videos and they were great for our trip to New York. You just need to add for people like me from outside the New York [and country in my case] that when you buy a subway card you need to put in the area code! This left me confused and nobody seemed to be able to help me, so eventually I purchased the card from the officer in booth at the subway. Another person gave me the tip to just enter 00000 [five zeros] and this would work as the area code. I did not try this but if you tried this and it is successful then it would be great to have this tip in a video for other travellers.
the balls actually indicated the station entrance/exit status, not whether its open or closed. Green means that you can enter or exit from that staircase, red means its exit only.
Coming soon, been there before but only been on the train twice and i did not know that about the red and green ball...thanks...watching as many vids as possible
It depends on the payment option you choose. Typically credit requires pin and debit requires your zip code. To be safe just use physical cash as that will avoid any problems with using a foreign bank card.
Really great information with lots of detail! Because of Covid I haven’t been able to get up to New York City to stay with my daughter, but I am enjoying the information on this channel and will be using some of it when I get up there!
There are numbers that correlate to letters just like on a phone. If your zip code is 9B4 you put in 924. Or you can pay with cash so no zip code needed. If that still doesn't work, you can purchase a ticket from someone in a ticket booth. I think all stations have a worker there who can assist you.
I love your style. You're great communicating all this important info. Also good to know about lyft, I will try it. By the way that was a really cool driver haha.. finally Sarah you look beautiful as always. :)
when you buy the unlimited metro card is it like really unlimited no limiting charge? can you really also use the metro card in the bus? is the subway and the bus like 24/7? I'm going to new york city manhattan in august 26 I'm really excited and I wanted you because your videos are amazing!!! congrats to be mother too by the way
Thank you for this! I’m about to move to the city and even though my bf is helping me learn everything he’s not the best at teaching so I appreciate your explanations :)
Greetings from Singapore. I am leaving NYC in a few hours after spending a beautiful week. Been watching your videos before my trip. Do visit my country if there's an opportunity. One thing I realized, pls listen carefully to whatever the announcement in the station or train. Sometimes they simply skipped certain stations and if you not aware, you could missed your stop.
Lyft app customer support is lousy! While waiting for a ride, a driver named Nashatar requested to cancel our ride because he claimed he was stuck in traffic from afar but we were still charged a cancelation fee even if it wasn't our fault. We tried to file a complaint to the app help link but is actually no help at all. Not even an option to request a refund.
Just to be clear, "public transportation" refers to methods of transportation managed by the Metropolitan Transit Authority, an NYC agency; it doesn't include LYFT or CitiBike. Also, NYC (and by this, I mean "Manhattan") is relatively easy to navigate regardless of how you choose to get around. The portion of Manhattan north of 14th Street is a huge grid. "Streets" run in the east-west direction and "avenues" run in the north-south direction.
Thank you for teaching me about public transportation. It’s stuff because I use Uber to go to a airport or elsewhere if I want to go to for excanple like NYC to Washington DC I will take megabus or greyhound to go to my destination. Think about the transportation before you go anywhere far or close by taking a bike or a car
1st question: What to do if I have only WiFi as a non new york citizen but from overseas. I think I do need internet access around the docks. ?? 2nd question: Do I have to dock the bike at the same place where I started ?? 3rd question: Do I have to indicate the usage time at the start ?? Please help. Ruud Mulder The Netherlands
1st Answer: You can buy an international sim card at any international airport they have different plans and prices depending on the number of days but i think they all come with unlimited data or you can buy a sim card in NYC at almost any store like T-Mobile, Simple Mobile, Straight Talk, Sprint etc. You can pay at the kiosk which is located at the end of any Citi Bike location and pay with your credit/debit card 2nd Answer: No, you may dock your bike at any other station that shows its green on the app this means it has available space where you can dock your bike. 3rd Answer: No you don't have to indicate anything once you pay you get a code and enter that code to unlock your bike simply by lifting the bike by the seat and that's it. Any extra fees for going over the time limit would be charged from your Credit Card. **Bonus now you can now also rent Smart Cars and electric Mopads in NYC Dejay Pilot - College Point, NYC
My question is how exactly using the citymapper for trains i get to figure the right one i see so far that I should go or they are identified by colors.

Something you forgot to mention: NEVER stand on the left side of an escalator. The left side is for walking, the right side is for standing.

Crosstown buses go east and west

It depends on the payment option you choose. Typically credit requires pin and debit requires your zip code. To be safe just use physical cash as that will avoid any problems with using a foreign bank card.

Is it better to start in the financial district from laguardia airport or should I go to midtown first
does distance matter? If person A travels 2 stops and person B travels 8 stops, do they both pay the same on the bus?
I believe they do pay the same
Yes. Also, You get 1 free transfer from train to bus or bus to train if used w/I 2 hours of first swipe
If we’re a party of 3 do we each have to buy a metro card or can I swipe one card for each person ?
Per Google, you can swipe 1 card for multiple people 🤷🏾♀️

This was very good. Some of the shots were amazing, and I downloaded one more app. Thank you!

2nd question: Do I have to dock the bike at the same place where I started ??
3rd question: Do I have to indicate the usage time at the start ??

1st Answer: You can buy an international sim card at any international airport they have different plans and prices depending on the number of days but i think they all come with unlimited data or you can buy a sim card in NYC at almost any store like T-Mobile, Simple Mobile, Straight Talk, Sprint etc.
You can pay at the kiosk which is located at the end of any Citi Bike location and pay with your credit/debit card
2nd Answer: No, you may dock your bike at any other station that shows its green on the app this means it has available space where you can dock your bike.
3rd Answer: No you don't have to indicate anything once you pay you get a code and enter that code to unlock your bike simply by lifting the bike by the seat and that's it. Any extra fees for going over the time limit would be charged from your Credit Card.
**Bonus now you can now also rent Smart Cars and electric Mopads in NYC
