Sad news indeed! One of the greatest!!!
Such nice music. I love real jazz in mono.
Saw him play twice with Weather Report, extraordinary one minute incendiary the next quiet lyrical and the interplay with Joe Zawinul was remarkable. And what a great writer too. Saw the Guardian called him “one of the greatest saxophone players of the Bebop era” One of?
Greatest is subjective…but it’s not a serious conversation without mentioning Shorter
From Herbie: “Wayne was one of the few people who brought music to Miles that didn’t get changed.”
I think that says it all in a nutshell
Hardbop era ! Wayne was smitten by bebop and arose during the hardbop driving blues era.
Wayne was the first jazz musician I ever saw live. As a teenager I saw him open for Chick Corea in 1984. One of my fondest music memories ever.
wayne shorter on aja steele dan brillant album with great man. rip sir
anther jazz great to go to great gig in the sky. cheers
Thanks.🎵 good for people to hear something of his earlier days.🎶
His work with Art Blakey wouldn't be amiss either.🎷
An exceptional composer. Something often overlooked. ALL his Blue Note stuff is exceptional 🎼🎵
Thanks
I am listening to Emanon now and it is magnificent - had never heard before
Great video. I listened to Speak No Evil last night after hearing the news. What a record. To add to the Wayne Shorter discography, Wayne was a member of Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers. I listened to Indestructible last weekend, which includes Lee Morgan. Another amazing album.
We lost a great one yesterday . Thank you for mentioning Mr Shorters passing. RIP
John this was a beautiful tribute to Wayne Shorter he was truly a titan of jazz and his music will continue to inspire . I really enjoyed your episode thanks .
Thanks John I will have to pick up a few of Waynes albums I have Silent way Great album.
I have to add / correct that he mainly played tenor and later on soprano sax, afaik,
Yes, of course--good catch, and thank you.
Thanks John, very respectfully done. Now to hunt down your recommendations. 🙏❤
Well done, John. He was an amazing musician and, by all reports, a wonderful man. I first heard him in early Weather Report albums, and, later, backtracked to his earlier work. As a sometime clarinetist, I was especially interested in his use of the soprano saxophone. We are blessed to have had him among us! ❤
Am I correct that the last piece you played was from Emanon? Will have to explore that one.
Thank you for celebrating and honoring Wayne's excellent legacy. Truly remarkable output and contributions to jazz.
Yes, correct! Thanks for watching.
Brill tribute. What’s playing on the end of the video?
I am new to your channel brother very glad I stumbled onto it. Great video
Thank you--welcome to the channel!
Thank you John for this recommendation, I’ll have to check him out.
I’m looking forward to your review of the Dynavector 507 Mk 2.
Wonderful Video John. Which album was playing in the beginning of the video ?
"Pug Nose" from "Introducing Wayne Shorter".
Did I hear you say Speak No Evil was a soundtrack? Apologies if I misinterpreted or am just not aware.
I misspoke, it's not a soundtrack.
W.S... ✌🎶🙏
You mention Speak No Evil as a soundtrack?
Yes, I misspoke. Sorry about that!
Tenor and soprano, I don't think he was ever an alto sax player, certainly not his main instrument.
I cannot understand why some people clean their records and playing equipment. I think the sound of the dust in the grooves created by the dirty stylus is very exciting.
Alto sax? That was the one thing he didn't play... He played tenor and soprano.
"...alto..." Boo...
Yes, you're right, I misspoke--tenor.
This old gramophone…
