I was just at a pastel demonstration this past weekend where the instructor had the exact opposite approach and it felt itchy under my skin lol. I love using alcohol with my pastels and thank God for that! I had bottles and bottles of alcohol everywhere. When the pandemic hit, I had a good supply for decontamination until I could replenish. Now, it is difficult again to get alcohol so I won't be using any with pastels, probably until the pandemic settles and it's safe again. I miss it something fierce. Love watching your video but it's making me miss working like this even more so I'm bookmarking it for when, God willing, the world is round again.

Love this Susan. So my style. You and your methods are a great model for me. Amazed to see how the layers build up on themselves to make that soft sky. I love your encouragement to enjoy the journey. . I always encourage my clients (I'm a mental health counselor) to do the same in their lives, so now I have to walk my own talk!! It's hard.
I have been a wanna-be artist all my life (since I used to copy the pictures off of Nancy Drew books in cray pas when I was young). Unfortunately, life kept saying "no, put this aside and focus on a paying job for the future." So, I passed on any of the art classes offered in high school in order to take "college prep" courses. I have kept on with little community art classes over the years but am now really pushing myself to work regularly. I will "retire" from my career in about 4 years and want to get myself ready for my next life!! There's this creative part of me that has been buried . Thank you for doing what you do. It is so inspiring to me. RUclips has really made informal art instruction available to folks who can't enroll in a formal college program.

Susan, I see Cornflowers (also known as Bachelor's Buttons) in this painting! They are electric blue with a dark purple center--flatish with "fringed petals" around the center. They are my favorite wild flower here in Washington. They can be blue, purple, dark pink, white and mixtures of all four and appear in large numbers. The outcroppings often contain all three or four colors and are stunning. I had an artist friend who painted them in watercolor. They are sometime accompanied by white Queen Ann's lace, and around here, by red Flanders poppies. They are so beautiful and you have captured them so well!! There will be numbers of them on the hills and even in the rocky areas in the summer. I have never managed to get their intense color so am delighted with this video!

Wow! At first I almost switched off thinking this kind of thing wasn't for me but then.......OMG this is just amazing!! The scene simply emerged before our eyes. I love to use pastels too but had not realised you could apply alcohol to smooth and blur them. I also never saw the value in underpainting layers in any medium as such and I felt it was a waste of materials and time but this picture really shows the value of doing it. Thank you for sharing your work and inspiring me today simply as a flower & nature lover and a newbie artist!

Hey Susan, I have been watching for awhile now and having trouble understanding the concept of under painting. Then found some very early Bob Ross on tv. Use to watch him when he was the only one to watch. He always stressed dark goes down first light won’t show without the dark. OH! Very beautiful painting and the whole video was so calming and relaxing ♥ do you use any fixative at the end for the color to not come off or does the alcohol hold it in place? Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge ♥

My friend and I spent the day drawing and getting the underpaintings done. Your instruction and lightheartedness are contagious. We had such a great time playing with pastels. It's been years since I have used pastels and I have mainly NuPastels. In your experience do they react to the alcohol wash differently than softer pastels? I would love to see a video comparing hard pastels vs soft pastels in an alcohol wash. Also, can you please share the colors/manufacturer for the pastel you used for the blue flowers? Thanks for making art fun for us newbies!

That is a great question! I haven't really compared the differences of using alcohol with harder vs. softer pastels. I'll have to do some experimenting. Thanks so much for your sweet comment :)

Susan - I was just about to ask the question about matting and framing and I see now that I did a while ago. Perhaps you could recommend an online tutorial by another pastel artist for this subject? I truly love your work with soft pastels. For years I rub and blend my work and can now see the freshness of your work and see the error of my ways. Need to try the underpainting technique. Thank you so much for your videos.

Hi Esta.... so glad you are learning about underpainting and keeping your strokes fresh without overblending. What is your question about matting and framing? Sorry I missed it before.

May I know what kind of paper you use? And I would like to know the best type of paper for soft pastel. Thank youuu!

One of my favorited sanded surfaces for pastels is Fisher 400. It never curls and stays nice and flat unlike a similar surface, UArt 400. I buy my Fisher paper at www.proartpanels.com.
