the way i see it, this is definitely a clash of queer fandom culture and the bigger gacha fandom. the queer are minorites so they try to find characters they relate to and they build safe spaces around that. we can't fault them for that as it's a way to cope with the harsh reality of existing as a queer person. what we can fault them for is them extending that "safe space" to encroach on others own spaces. a lot of fandom etiquette is broken here. people used to just allow all kinds of headcanons and not interact with headcanons they don't agree with. (okay well that's not true, shipping wars have always been a thing.) either way, headcanon whatever sexuality you want.

Some small Arknights cliques had a meltdown when a sorta well-known guy was self-insert shipping with Skadi, and that clique got really mad because they wanted her to be exclusively a lesbian and went after the guy to harass him.. Which is crazy cause I think a ton of people already saw Skadi as Bi but it's just another case of Biphobia in the form of "Bisexuals are okay as long as they date the same sex" and then someone headcanoning them dating the opposite sex suddenly makes the character no longer Bi in peoples eyes. It's frustrating to see as someone who is queer that so many people are willing to go after the most innocent expressions just because they disagree with it. Like it's definitely a maturity question and those people who harassed him will regret it in the future, but damn it sucks in the moment. Tectone just goes too far with the way he starts expressing very gross and misogynistic/objectifying statements in retaliation to people doing this.

I agree with pokke honestly. If you find a character attractive, good for you ! Aventurine got Topaz's En VA, Clara's En VA and Aventurine's En VA crazy about him, and there is no drama between them, they are even bonding over the fact that they find him hot. And honestly, that's the way to go about it.
Now, saying absolutely horrible things to other people (from both sides), that is not the way to go about it, and even less if you talk shit about the character themselves. You can dislike a ship or a character, but you can't just go around talking crap to everyone.
If you don't stand a particular way someone portrays a character or a ship, that is fine as well, just stop looking at it. For ex, as a lesbian, i cannot really stand looking at Caelus ships or most straight ships in hsr, but i don't make a big deal out of it i just stay outside of those spaces.
At the end of the day, those characters are who you want them to be with the amount of canonical material provided to you

Yes there are people that live on the internet and live off queer ships. It may not be healthy. Have you seen Asia's parasocial relationship with fictional characters? What people do with celebrities and idols? Fictional characters can be considered as such in those people's mind. It's the same thing.
Plus as OP posted, there is something wrong about us as a society where the rise of overidentification to sexuality is a symptom of a larger issue in the west. The west cares too much about this shit when as you said there is a lot more to a person than their sexuality. Caring too much about one's identity is a trap, I feel like a symptom of a lost generation that don't have anything else to attach to because everything else has been deconstructed by post-modernism philosophy whether it is conscious or not (see how everything starts to become too relative and adopt an anti realist stance to many things). As tough of a pill it is to swallow, a lot of social media behaviour is mental illness. Not being able to separate fiction from reality and obsessing over anime characters' sexualities is such a chronically online behaviour. You can have your headcanons, but just be open and respect what everyone else likes. Don't take the internet so seriously. It's not that hard.
